It'd be nice to see you have a pair on you after the bye week Shurmur.

Re: Rosas missed XP a few weeks back--

"He gets to miss one in a lifetime. That's his miss"

Cant get this quote out of my head (aware it's not all on Rosas, it's the entire battery) but I sure do long for the days when TC(or anyone for that matter) would be waiting for you on the sidelines, turn bright red and a chew a guy out for a mental mistake.

Pretty much sums up what feels like Shurmur's healthy relationship with mediocrity.

There has to be a way to command

Success on the football field without chewing a guy out in front of everybody, even in football.

I witness to being done at the high school level when I was trying to I have a practice with a bunch of young kids during the flag football season, it’s totally distracting and it turned a bunch of parents off that were there watching. It’s old school, it has no place today, and there’s no point to it.

There is a time and place for it and every player does it. But chewing out your kicker has to be the most counter productive things you can do in 90 percent of instances.

It s a real turn off to see high school coaches act that way. Not saying it s never effective, but I used to think Coughlin looked like a jerk when he carried on

Never understood how you go off on a player for a physical mistake
Question for the OP and others: Does your performance improve
CT Charlie : 11/12/2019 5:28 pm : link
when your boss chews you out publicly? In the short or long term, is it an effective way of dealing with employees? I think some well-respected leaders with a long track record can get away with it, but even most of them concede that it's a lot less effective technique than others.
I think it depends on the person imo.

As someone else stated, everybody is different. There is a time and place for everything. I am the type of person that excels when someone gets on me. Certain people respond to that. Can you imagine the military being like, "It's okay. You'll get them next time. Just keep your head up."?

Football has always been associated with war so it is no surprise that when you get in the "trenches" and the "bullets are flying" that you are ready for it. There is not time for being sensitive. With that said, yes, there are other ways to get through to people. That is part of being a coach. You have to know when and how to push buttons and to who.

Did you guys ever see Miracle? The HC knew that his team needed a kick in the ass every now and then so he would call out his superstar in front of the rest of the team because he knew if they all saw their best player getting criticized then nobody is safe. But the HC told that player if he uses his first name he is coaching him but if he uses his last name he is really calling him out for the team's benefit.
Depends on sport and position

Skill activities in sports baseball (fielding, batting, pitching), basketball (shooting), football (kicker, throwing the football, catching the football) do not normally improve with yelling. It just makes the player more nervous and on edge.

Blocking, tackling, running plays, basketball rebounding and defense can improve as they are more effort related than fine motor skills.
"Mental mistake"?
Leg of Theismann : 11/12/2019 11:58 pm : link
The guy is a kicker who happened to miss a kick. That isn't a mental mistake. I'm almost positive the image you have in your head is of Coughlin chewing out Dodge for not punting the ball out of bounds? THAT was more likely a mental mistake or failure to follow instructions. NOT the same situation.

Also- wasn't that missed XP by Rosas like 44 yards or some shit? Or did I imagine that? I don't know I've already kind of suppressed the memory of that game (as I do with most Giants games these days). Give the guy a break he's the first pro bowl kicker we've had since... I don't even know when. Yelling at a talented hard-working kicker for not making a kick just makes you look at an imbecile, not a "leader of men" or anything by any means.
OK just realized
Leg of Theismann : 11/13/2019 12:03 am : link
you were referring to the kick a few weeks back. But yeah- point is that was not a mental mistake it was just a bad kick. Even the best kickers miss these longer XP attempts now. It happens. I highly doubt he missed that 44 yard XP against the Jets because Shurmur was too "soft" on him after his last missed XP or something.

Every coach is different. Shurmur getting more angry isn't going to make him a better coach. Not being a horrendous play-caller, not being a terrible game/clock manager... these are the things that would got a lot further in him being less awful of a coach.
