NGT: Jimmy Garappolo

clatterbuck : 11/12/2019 5:05 pm
What do you folks think about Garappolo? I'm no expert but in the games I've seen he seems rather inaccurate and more important, appeared rattled at defining moments in last night's game. ESPN got some closed ups during OT and he actually had the "deer-in-the-headlights look. I know he was playing without Kittle and Sanders but I wonder if Niners are sold on him as a franchise QB and maybe regret giving him the big contract.
Good not great

disrespect but kind of silly. They are 8-1 (yes, their defense and running game are the main reasons why) but his contract only matters if they 1) Don't win a SB 2) He stops them from adding/retaining other big players.
They overpaid to extend him IMO
jcn56 : 11/12/2019 5:11 pm : link
but he's good enough for them to win with. Whether or not he'll be able to succeed is the playoffs, we're about to find out.

He's still relatively inexperienced given how much time he spent on the bench, so he could improve from here.
I don't think he's anything special
Greg from LI : 11/12/2019 5:12 pm : link
But with that defense and running game, they don't need him to be.
I

think he's good enough to give them above average (but not elite) QB play. It's enough to win a SB.
He was starting to find his stride...

after a miserable start. Keep in mind he is/was recovering from a major knee injury.

Last night was mixed. I counted at least six on the money throws that were dropped. With Kittle out, and Sanders going out in the first half, JimG was shorthanded with weapons.

He also made some poor decisions on throws that I think were part and parcel of relentless pressure he was under once Clowney realized he was unblockable last night. I thought he should have run more, too. Strategically, I thought the 9ers needed to double Clowney more. I don't know why the didn't...

I'll say this - JimG led the game winning drive if his K didn't have an anxiety attack on the FG attempt. If he makes the 47 yarder, probably a different narrative...

Probably will be similiar level qb's
maybe good enough to get to playoffs
but not elite
and since we havent sniffed playoff except 2016, that works for me as of today

He is worth every penny.. they are 14-3 when he starts and 3-10 when he doesn't.. they were winning with him when they had a bad team.. they lost when he wasn't there..
He drove the team down the field to tie the score

at the end of regulation and had them in position to win in OT. Played well when it mattered. Although, the three and out leading to Seattle’s final possession was not good.

With a good enough defense they can probably get you to the dance. And occasionally they can win you a game. But not often will they put a team on their back and win.
I do not think he is as

good as DJ. He was getting rattled, he was inaccurate under pressure, looked a bit jumpy. I said this after the game. I'm not saying he is bad and maybe he is not used to the pressure the Seahawks out on him. Could have had a bad night, too. One game does not prove anything.

Great post.

It's frustrating seeing the narrative on Garoppolo being what it is, either a game manager or a turnover machine (not sure how you can be both). That he's #1 in the league at converting on 3rd down seems to be of little importance to people's narratives. And that's with many of those balls dropped!

Peep how Matt Ryan, a QB with 8 years experience at the time looked like shit under Shanahan, year 1. A year prior to becoming MVP:

Quote:

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is struggling. And it’s not clear why.

“I just don’t think he looks as comfortable back there,” Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway recently told PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio. “I think Ryan just looks a little uncomfortable. I don’t know if it’s protections or just the throws or routes that they’re throwing into but he just hasn’t looked as comfortable to me the last few weeks when we were watching the most previous games.”

So why is he uncomfortable? Some would pin it at least in part on the decision of receiver Roddy White to complain about his role in the offense after a 4-0 start. Although the Falcons won their fifth game, Ryan’s passer rating against Washington plummeted from 112.6 to 55.1.

In the first four games, Ryan had six touchdown passes and two interceptions. In the seven since then, Ryan has 10 and 10.

Here’s a possible explanation. Whenever a young quarterback gets his first shot at playing in the NFL, opposing defenses develop after several weeks enough game film to allow them to crack the code, figuring out what the quarterback does well, what he doesn’t do well, what he likes to do, and what he doesn’t like to do. They also can spot tendencies and tells, which make it easier to determine what will happen after the ball is snapped.

While Ryan isn’t a new quarterback, he’s in a new offense, run by Kyle Shanahan. And it’s possible that things that worked early in the year simply aren’t working now, with defenses available to either take them away or see them coming.

Regardless of what’s happening with Ryan, he has shown in the past that he has the ability to play at a high level. And the Falcons are confident he’ll turn it around, and that he’ll be the team’s quarterback for years to come.
Besides, if they give up on Ryan, what are they going to do at the quarterback position?

It's still early, and Jimmy G is going nowhere. Sometime next year I think we'll know how good he really is.

I've been on here for several years now and keep it real without too much homerism. I will ride and die with Garoppolo over most NFL QBs. I follow the team very closely and he's done enough for me to have the faith long term. Nothing is guaranteed, but Niners have a much better shot of a great QB sticking with him than moving on from him. That much I'm sure of.

When the time is right he will get his due.

I think the real judgment should come next year.

Biggest question mark on the 49ers is not Jimmy G but his WRs. Outside of Sanders, they by and large cannot be depended on over the long haul.

The difference last night was simple:

Jimmy's WRs couldn't catch a cold
Wilson's WRs caught everything

In a passing league, WRs count.

Not as good as DJ? Haha.

Try this out:

Tell me all the NFL QBs who can make release the ball that fast, let alone with accuracy.

If Russell Wilson makes his money on the deep ball and scramble drill, Mahomes on arm talent and throwing on the run, then Jimmy G makes his money on his lightning fast release.

It's special.

Exactly. End of the day JG will ultimately be defined by postseason/big game numbers but he’s a good player and worth every penny. Always cracks me up when people say a guy is overpaid. The alternative is?
You're going to have to concede at least that much around here
jcn56 : 11/12/2019 9:49 pm : link
for some, assuming that Jones is a lock to be a high caliber franchise QB of the future is the only thing keeping them off the ledge.
Garapolo is overpaid for what he is...
Torrag : 11/12/2019 11:57 pm : link
but he's not alone in that at the QB position.
The dude is 16-3 in his career as a starter
MattyKid : 11/13/2019 7:23 am : link
WTF else you want the guy to do?
A good QBs best friend is a great TE ...
Spider56 : 11/13/2019 7:54 am : link
And SF has Kittle ... take him away and Jimmy G becomes average. The same can be said for Cam Newton with Olsen. Look what Whitten does for Dallas, Ertz for the Eagles, Kelce for KC ... and the list goes on. The Giants have a 1 dimensional china doll who can’t block to save his soul.
He’s no Aaron Rodgers but
morrison40 : 11/13/2019 9:17 am : link
No one else is either. He seems to get the job done when he has all his play makers present.
Good record
Banks : 11/13/2019 10:08 am : link
but he is very average thus far. Good enough arm, ok accuracy in the mid range, not very mobile, and doesn't make many plays. His only 2 good games this year were against the awful cardinals and bengals. His first year he had 2 games where he looked good, but won beating some of the dregs of the league and the rams resting starters. I'm not sold on him yet
I think shanny could do well with danny

Dimes and would be scary as shit with the Ravens QB running counter side runs.
Way, way too early to compare Jones and Garoppolo
regulator : 11/13/2019 10:18 am : link
He's only started 19 career games, but he's also in his 7th pro season.
Gotta see more
BillKo : 11/13/2019 5:47 pm : link
he was really shakey on the last minute drive to tie the game (should have been picked on the 1st play) and looked like an pick waiting to happen after that.

He was missing two of his best weapons too, though, and did lose his top RB.

San Fran is going to win on defense if they go anywhere in the playoffs.

JG just has to stay away from mistakes and make key throws, not carry the team.

How else did RG3 win rookie of the year?

The reality is that Shanny doesn't want running QBs anymore (firm pass on Kaepernick, never considered Mahomes), but back then as a mere OC under Snyder's dictatorship, he did what had to be done and props on a great job.

As soon as RG3 stopped taking orders he failed.
