Cap allocation

frankmihs : 11/17/2019 5:03 pm
Do we have any options but to eat money on Solder and Shepard or Tate? Is a trade feasible at this point? Maybe for another high-priced veteran at a position of need? If we bring in a new tackle where does Solder go? If we bring or draft a number one receiver with Tate, Shepard, and Slayton that means one or two of our high priced we will be on the bench.. Saying all that, I am not in favor of bringing in a free agent number one receiver.

Just think we are in a bad place for both of those positions with cap allocation, assuming we address both positions in the off-season.
Our cap is in good shape heading into next year.

If there is one area to allocate cap money it is the OL.
I agree but
frankmihs : 11/17/2019 5:13 pm : link
my question is what happens to Solder. I don't think moving him to right tackle is going to make him any better. Also I'm unrealistically holding out hope that Gates is an average to above-average right tackle.
Tate's 2020 salary guarantees were voided by his suspension

So the Giants are only only the hook for the prorated signing bonus. The Giants would save $3 million by cutting him (with 7.5m dead cap).
CAP

I don’t think that the CAP will represent a problem for the Giants

As for Solder, I think that the Giants will retain him for at least another year
I think that the Giants will find a LT and see if Solder can play RT

That would improve two positions

There seemed to be a market for Solder. OL are in high demand around the league. If we fill his spot then he gets traded.

Forgive me, but fill it with what? Nothing in the upcoming draft looks like an instant starter.
IF is the key word there

.
Solder
WillVAB : 11/17/2019 5:36 pm : link
Signed a 4 year deal. 2020 is year 3, which will probably be his last year with the Giants.

The Giants are in a good position regarding the cap moving forward. Jenkins, Ogletree, Martin, Bethea, and Ellison can all be cut after this year.

Sheppard and Tate have very reasonable deals relative to the market.

They key moving forward is getting the ROI on the contracts they’re likely to give out this year and making sure they retain the in-house talent they’ve drafted.
Why the hate on Tate?

(I'm a poet and don't know it!)
Let's release from the bottom; there are already a lot of slots to fill.
Keowee
frankmihs : 11/17/2019 7:55 pm : link
No hate, he's a fine number 2 or 3 receiver but my point is with him, Shepard, and Slayton if we add another number one, maybe Jeudy, they both become redundant and no need for both.

At this point I think Tate is more likely to be a Giant next year than Shepard.
Tate is a good player and should stay
Rjanyg : 11/17/2019 9:50 pm : link
If Shepard can get healthy and stay healthy, along with Slayton, our WR group is pretty good.

Cut Ogletree, Bethea, Martin, maybe Ellison and Jenkins. That is another $20 Mill to add to the $63 Mill in cap space.

Solder will stay. A young OT should be a priority in the draft.

Biggest need is Edge. Next FS. ILB as well.
Keep Solder and Jenkins for 2020
giantstock : 11/17/2019 11:13 pm : link
Are you going to get a FA good CB for Jenkins price or is there risk?

Secondly, is Baker a lock to be a good cb?

No way I'm getting rid of Jenkins unless there is a perfect situation.

Why would the
mdthedream : 11/18/2019 7:37 am : link
Giants get rid of Tate and waste money? Worse case they trade him but he is making plays and to me would be a good 2ndto third wr on this team next year. Sheppard is the wildcard seeing he has concussion issues. Tate,Slayton,Sheppard and add a big bodied WR would be ideal.

mdthedream : 11/18/2019 7:41 am : link
I agree on both counts unless you can trade either one. Solder was coming off a injury so I wonder if a season of getting ready if he will turn it around. Jenkins is still a good cover CB. The Giants have enough money to fix issues so this is a big preseason coming up.
I think if Shepard retires
section125 : 11/18/2019 7:42 am : link
the Giants are only responsible for his signing bonus. Salary is voided.
Shepherd is not going to retire
Chip : 11/18/2019 10:18 am : link
He has 5.45 mil in guaranteed salary owed him. He won't retire with that due. If he can't play he will end up on PUP
