Athletic: Big Question in Carolina is Rivera future, not Cam

Giantophile : 11/18/2019 2:29 pm
Speculative article re: Carolina's new owner & Rivera's future in Carolina that I'm posting here solely to fuel the who-replaces-Shurmur-if-he's-fired conversation.

It sounds like even if Rivera was out in Carolina he'd likely take some time off. Still, on a slow news day figured it's worth adding another name to the discussion.

If Rivera shook loose, would you want him here?
Real Question is Rivera, not Newton (behind Athletic Paywall) - ( New Window )
He's an adult
90.Cal : 11/18/2019 2:37 pm : link
So automatically he qualifies.

No seriously, Rivera over Shurmur pre-Daniel Jones is a no brainer... but now that you have a QB... I think I'd rather see Shurmur develop him for a 2nd season before I want Shurmur gone... but my patience with Shurmur's ability to win games is wearing very thin.
I looked at him a few weeks back as a replacement.
Dinger : 11/18/2019 2:37 pm : link
I say yes. Defensive minded, check. Seems to be able to develop players, check. Has had success, check.

That said, if there are people on here (FMiC) who are able to follow the Panthers more closely, what are his pros and cons?
With the uncertainty in Cam and the likely hood that they will
Diver_Down : 11/18/2019 2:43 pm : link
be in the market for a QB (Allen isn't the guy), it seems like a logical time to install a new coaching staff as they undergo the transition. I think there were rumblings when Tepper acquired the Panthers that there was some tension between the two. Hopefully, FMIC chimes in and corrects any wrong information.
His teams seem to be prepared.....
BillKo : 11/18/2019 3:29 pm : link
....coming here, he'd have to hire a good OC who could get the most out of DJ. That would be paramount.
Well DG
Jay in Toronto : 11/18/2019 3:52 pm : link
would certainly have an informed opinion

I think the concentration should be to get the most out of Barkley. If Riverboat Ron can bring his OC (Norv Turner) that would be a huge plus. I love the way CMC is used. Barkley should be used the same way. Getting the most out of Barkley, especially before he is due his second contract, will yield dividends for DJ and the receivers.
I like..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/18/2019 4:05 pm : link
Rivera. I think the "Riverboat Ron" thing is stupid and overused, and he's not had back-to-back winning seasons ever (but either have the Panthers).

Their offenses haven't been fantastic, but his defenses have been strong for the majority of the time here. And players seem to go hard for him.
Thanks Fats
Dinger : 11/18/2019 4:16 pm : link
While it wasn't a 'giants poweresque' novella, it was concise and to the point. I think you could sub out Norv Turner for someone else, but I want someone who gets his guys playing and who can delegate as well as get the big picture.
Rivera apparently is a big fan of DG
Mattman : 11/18/2019 4:50 pm : link
We took a few of his assistants in Mike Shula, who was his OC and Tom McGaughey, who was his ST Coord.

Chase Blackburn is his current ST coordinator. Fewell is his secondary coach... He lets Norv run the offense and has taken over the defense again.

Rivera is a damn good coach that develops talent in players and other coaches.
Only if he can bring that LB that wears number 59 ...
Spider56 : 11/18/2019 4:59 pm : link
Seriously, I go back and forth on RR ... his teams are usually well prepared but have struggled in big games and seem to play down to teams (like yesterday) and seldom up (see debacle in SF several weeks ago). Maybe a change of scenery with a new cast would help get him to the next level of coaching.
Would take him in a heartbeat
Anakim : 11/18/2019 5:10 pm : link
Major upgrade over Shurmur. The only thing is he would need to bring a strong OC along.
So, your proposing replacing one loser with another loser?

Good linebackers are the key. DBs are so-so. DL has had some good players, but lately they are just OK. The linebackers make up for some deficiencies elsewhere.

Barkley

could be like CMC with Norv

76-61 is a loser? Four playoff appearances since 2013 constitute a loser?

Throughout his tenure the team has won three divisional titles, been to the playoffs four times and made the franchise’s second ever Super Bowl appearance.

Yeah, total loser...

Yeah, they should have fired him after that 15-1 season.
Getts should be sending him.some

Cupcakes and flowers.

Pair him up with some offense folks from the shanny Jr tree. Falcons, 9ers, instant outside zone run play action . Even Vikings maybe, very strangely

You could even keep the betch if he agrees to work the gentlemans play style
How many head coaches have actual personal game stats such as
idiotsavant : 11/18/2019 7:01 pm : link
7 sacks, some INTs 9?, and fumble recoveries.
I would be happy with Rivera
Jay on the Island : 11/18/2019 8:05 pm : link
He has built a strong coaching staff. I'd prefer a defensive minded HC as long as he brings in a good OC to run the offense. It would be nice if he kept Norv Turner as his OC.

Lol aside from a total surprise hire he would be one of the best available proven guys out there. Tomlin too if he shakes loose.
