XBRONX : 11/18/2019 5:53 pm
Going to Seattle for 6 days for Thanksgiving.Supposed to be cold and rainy.(what else) Any top indoor attraction suggestions besides the Space Needle would be appreciated.
Underground Seattle, there is a kids version and an adult one.
Zeke's Alibi : 11/18/2019 5:57 pm : link
. And I don't know what the weather report says, but the rain in seattle isn't usually like you see on TV. It's like a step above a heavy mist most the time.
Go to Chuly Gardens
Brian in SI : 11/18/2019 6:03 pm : link
Next to Space needle. One of the coolest places i have ever seen. We had time to kill and it was part of the space needle ticket. It was my favorite part of Seattle.
The Pop Culture Museum

Agreed, Pikes Market is awesome. You can easily make that an all day event. Check out the bubble gum wall disgustingly fantastic... lol
Portland's a fantastic town
Go Terps : 11/18/2019 6:30 pm : link
That said, it's a 3 hour drive from Seattle to Portland. It's like telling someone that's visiting New York to stay away from Boston.

I wouldn't get too deterred by the rain - it's not like it's a constant downpour. It doesn't rain as violently as it does on the east coast.

If you change your mind and want to take a day trip to do something outdoorsy, Lake Quinault in Olympic National Park is an incredibly beautiful place.

If you like Sushi make sure you hit up a few places while you
Zeke's Alibi : 11/18/2019 6:33 pm : link

Portland is a poor mans philly? Are you sure you have ever been

The domes at Amazons HQ
T in NJ : 11/18/2019 6:39 pm : link
Its called Spheres Discovery at Understory, the admission is free.

I also like the museum at Boeing Field called The Museum of Flight. Lots of cool stuff from an SR-71 to the original Air Force One.

I also liked the Seattle Library.
Went earlier this year...
Dan in the Springs : 11/18/2019 6:42 pm : link
bought one of the packages (harbor tour, space needle, aquarium, science and pop museums, etc.) They were all fine, some better than others depending on your interests. My wife & I enjoyed the science museum better than the pop museum, for example, although if you were really into video games or seeing a large exhibition of Prince, you might feel the other way.

The best thing though was the e-bike tour. We took this one. Very easy to do, got a great view of the town, the guide was a local history teacher. Not sure what the weather would be like, but if you get a chance to do this I highly, highly recommend it.

I will admit that bike tours are pretty much top of my list of things to do in any city we visit though, with few exceptions (NYC comes to mind).
Portland has a major homeless problem
widmerseyebrow : 11/18/2019 6:43 pm : link
but it's a great little town. I'd rather vacation there than Philly any day.
Take the ferry to Victoria (on Vancouver Island) and
PatersonPlank : 11/18/2019 6:50 pm : link
Vancouver. Really nice places and a nice ride.

As for Portland, its a little too weird for me.
Dicks Burgers/Wallingford

even if they do charge an extra 5 for onions.

Bastids.

Pike's Market was anything to get excited over. They have stores there. The stores sell things. OK.

In my brief time living out here it looks like the entire west coast (including Vancouver) has a major homeless problem. I guess they never read Giuliani's playbook for basically throwing all the homeless into the East River.
I enjoyed some of the
pjcas18 : 11/18/2019 6:58 pm : link
small pubs and shops at Pike's Place.

I don't remember any names, we just walked around the area and went into ones that looked interesting.

I do remember some good local beers and it was also the first time I had smoked salmon (in one of the pubs they had an appetizer special - smoked salmon served on these crackers). it was so good I ordered 3 of them.

and then when I got home I bought a smoker so I could make smoked salmon. Which I still have yet to make.

i would second the suggestion

of hitting olympic national park. it's huge and there's a lot to see beyond lake quinault, although that's certainly a good place to start.
Underground Seattle tour
Steve L : 11/18/2019 7:56 pm : link
For sure. Its pretty awesome.

Pikes Market didnt wow me. Just a bunch of vendors hawking their shit.

Take the drive to Mt Rainer. Its breathtaking.

Last time I was there (last summer), I caught The Foo Fighters. I recommend that as well 😁
mount rainier is a good option
japanhead : 11/18/2019 8:07 pm : link
but the road will probably (definitely) be closed by thanksgiving time, if it isn't already. olympic national park will be open all year. the road up to mount olympus might be closed by late nov, but that's just one small section of the park.

Did you do the adult one or family one? I had to do the family one because the girl I was with wasn't 21 yet and while I thought it was okay I got the jist the R rated version would have been much more fascinating. The guide was great though.

I was by myself so I did the adult version. Talks about how the city education system was initially funded by whore houses and the old hash market. Its great.

I was in Seattle in April, their homeless situation is pretty bad too. They were out in force, especially at night. And more than a few were pretty belligerent. It was an eye opener for me.

Yeah the homeless in Seattle seem to be more agressive than other places I've been.

Places to eat and drink
T in NJ : 11/19/2019 8:59 am : link
5 Point Cafe - dive bar in the shadow of the Space Needle
Katsu Burger - Japanese style burgers , a couple locations around the city
Canon - incredible bar
Rheinhaus - German-style beer hall with indoor bocce courts
Any brewery in theFremont and Ballard area, personally favor Reubens and Urban Farmer

My wife and I went in 2010
ArizonaBlue : 11/19/2019 10:26 am : link
for the Giants-Seahawks game. We stayed mostly in the general area of the waterfront(we only had one full day there). A few things we enjoyed that were all in that vicinity

The aquarium was really nice
Ivar's Oyster Bar was nice
There was a nice Irish Pub we found too, called The Owl N Thistle
I only tried one local brew, called Mack and Jacks-very good
I'll add Snoqualmie Falls
widmerseyebrow : 11/19/2019 10:30 am : link
Nice place to have a meal too.
I second Rheinhaus that place was pretty cool.
Zeke's Alibi : 11/19/2019 10:52 am : link
At least I think it was Rheinhaus there are a few of those type of joints around Seattle I believe.
My wife & I just went
Andrew in Austin : 11/19/2019 10:56 am : link
earlier this summer. We like walking around and the weather was great, so take it for what it is worth. Best things I liked:

- Chihuly Museum - it was somewhat otherworldly
- Pop Culture Museum - tons of fun

both are near the space needle (which I kind of found boring).

One other thing we did was a food tour - it was a blast!

Have fun!
A Couple of Others...
Scott in Seattle : 11/19/2019 12:05 pm : link
If you like airplanes, the Museum of Flight is great, as is Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection up in Everett (especially if you like classic WWII fighters or want to see a real Russian T-34/85) (about 40 minutes north of Seattle -- if there's no traffic).
Oh and dont forget to buy and smoke
Steve L : 11/19/2019 3:17 pm : link
Weed. Cuz ya can.
