Should I sign up for a free credit monitoring service after a data breach?
I have been offered two years of free credit monitoring and fraud protection services with MyIDCare, after a data breach (“unauthorized access”) at the administrator of my dental plan. They have no evidence that any of my information was accessed, acquired, or misused. The intrusion may have occurred as early as 2010.
My credit reports have been frozen since 2011. I checked two within the last few weeks, and there is nothing unusual. (The third insists that I send in a form and they will mail my credit report to me.) My credit score is also unchanged.
I will have to give my SSN to MyIDCare to sign up for the service. They will have it even after the two years has ended. They might also be hacked.
