I'm not 'rooting' for it, but it's probably best in the long run-be it GM & /or HC change, draft position-that we lose out. A 2-14 finish might be the kick in the pants Mara needs to know what's going on now isn't working. I think we definitely lose the next 3, but Miami & @ Washington screams like a split to me. I was visiting a cousin this weekend who is a big Skins fan & if you think we suck, watch them. They're even worse.
Anyways, who else is in this boat?
Also, the Skins are one pick ahead of us right now. Assuming Haskins shows something the rest of the year, they're not taking a QB. Figure Cincy is the #1 pick & takes Burrow. Chase Young in burgundy...no thanks. I don't need him hitting the hell out of DJ for the next decade plus. I want him in Giants blue.
This is a young defense with some talent, th at needs to gel. They need to go through yhis rough time and come out the other side
What I'm hoping for is something that resembles a functional football team, but I'm not holding my breath. Week in, week out, more awful football, from veterans who we know won't be here much longer to rookies who are supposedly gaining 'valuable playing experience' despite looking like absolute horseshit.
Actually, here's my ideal scenario: Giants lose out until week 17, including losing to Skins and Dolphins and securing the #2 spot in the draft. I'd also love to see Shurmur fired with a week or 2 to go in the season, but that's just me. THEN-- let's say week 17 is a win and in game for Philly and the Giants pull the massive upset and end their season. Now THAT, would be sweet. And it could absolutely give the young guys the little taste of victory they need. For DJ it would be similar to Eli's week 17 win against Dallas in 2004, although I think DJ already had a little taste of that back in Tampa, but I think he needs one at home and he needs it to close out the season and ruin Philly's playoff hopes. Would love to see it happen with a last minute TD drive as well.
However, if the team finishes strong and shows some promise, then maybe a few free agents would not mind coming to the team.
You want to attract players who are hungry to win. Let's face it, if you sign with this team, it is only about the money.
The LB core will need to be bolstered. Personally, even though it's ugly right now, I think this defense is closer than most think.
Most of us knew going in it would be ugly on that side of the ball until the youth movement gets it figured out.
I can't see us losing all three, most probably we'll pick up a game against Washington.
So they need to spend the remainder of the season breaking the losing habit and learning how to win. If they are to be watching the playoffs from their couches at least them be licking their chops thinking had they not gotten off to such a low start it could be them out there, rather than wondering what the hell it's gonna take to get there because they feel miles and miles away.
Nothing would be better for the team than finishing 8-8. It won't get them into the playoffs, but think how confident they'll be going into the offseason. Think what'll mean to the team's confidence in Daniel Jones.
Agree get to 8-8 and middle of draft. Learn what they are and hopefully they can come back next yr at say, 6-10 or 8-8.
And learn that 6-10 or 8-8 and avg team is best goal each year in and year out. Don't need high draft picks. It's very over rated.
It'd be great if they learn what winning is once in awhile. The needle is pointing up.
Second, this notion that the Giants have to win more games this year because they're a young team that needs to "learn how to win" is outdated.
Prior to free agency talented players, including backups, remained the property of their respective NFL teams as long as they could still play. During those years I would agree that a team filled with young players would have needed to "learn how to win" (as a team) to get to the next level, because there was very little player movement.
Now with free agency the NFL is a year-to-year league. Teams like the Rams can be a 4 win team in 2017 and an 11 win team the next year. The Jags were a 3 win team in 2016 and the next year they won 10 games and played in the conference championship, before returning to their losing ways as a 5 win team the following year.
Bad teams don't need to "learn how to win" as a team, because most of those players aren't even going to be there when the team turns it around.
Bad teams start winning when they get better players and better coaches.
It's a lot of blown assignments. This team needs to play its way out of it.
The Jags and other teams you eantg to compare us to, we wish we had the core to build on those bad teams had. We arent the Jags, or the Niners. The 2017 roster was a complete shitshow built on many years of failed drafting.
There was never a quick fix coming out of that. Never
This isn't an under 2 seasons fix

Show me where I said that young teams don't need to learn how to put it together in order to become a winning team in the future. Of course they have to figure it out and get better or the else the team needs to replace them.
I simply suggesting that winning more games THIS YEAR is not some required next step to become a winning team in the future.
The NFL is a year-to-year league at this point.
So, what I,want more than anything is to see PROGRESS which should lead to some more wins....two more at least.
If we lose Chase, so be it. I hope he is not the only important kid to come out of college this year.
This is how I feel too. It's wanting the coach gone as well as getting Young.
If it was only one of those I might feel differently but IMO, they're two things this team desperately needs and the best way to get them is to lose out.

This is the first time I’ve rooted for them to lose out. It’s whats necessary to make sure coaching changes are made and lock in the draft position the Giants need.

Yup. This whole damned team needs to be blown up, top to bottom.

Totally agree. This whole team will not be trashed this coming off season. So the offense and defense must start to come together. I'm hoping DJ can keep improving and carry this team too victories. Barkley too. And if at least part of the secondary can show they belong it will be great. Sorry but I always cheer for Giant wins.
but i really hope i'm wrong.

Intelligent post.
One big time player and a new coach who knows how to actually coach, sure would go a long way to turning this shit show around.
No one expects Young to turn this team around all by himself but he sure would have a great impact on the D. There's talent here already, unfortunately we don't have the coaching to get the most out of it.
When we come out down 14-17 in the 1st Qtr three games in a row that screams terrible coaching to me. There are other things too but to see that right at the start is the most obvious.

Where do you guys come up with this crap. What youre seeing in the defensive backfield right now are players who the light has not come on yet .

So then your suggesting they just turn it on next season somehow and win then?
They need to keep making progress now. I can't even wrap my head around whatever point you are trying to make.
Learn to win without winning? Or just start week 1 next season as a shut down defense. This playing time is more valueable than camp, more valuable than preseason. This isn't about individuals getting replaced either. Its about a young unit learning to play together. They need to earn some success.
I also remember wanting a coaching change so badly that I hoped for losses at the end of a season to seal the deal.
However, after two seasons where for almost the entire second half of the season I believed losses were best for the team, I m not going there this season.
I m different than many here in that this season I have been invested in the games rooting hard for wins, I haven’t enjoyed the disappointment of losing but it s been good to care about wins again.
I have found myself still in the games at the end and it s been good to care again; I think this is mainly because of Daniel Jones......I m rooting for wins in the last 6 games, especially against the Eagles.
Might find myself understanding last game of the season a loss would be better, but that s against the Eagles, so.....

I thought about the 2004 Dallas game after reading halfway down your post, then saw you already mentioned it. That game was so pivotal for Eli and the rest of the Team. Eli changing the play at the goal line to a running play and Tiki scoring that TD felt like winning the Super Bowl in that moment. I think it went a long way in the Team having confidence in Eli moving forward. The Team went from not being able to buy a win to the playoffs the following year. That win, I believe, cemented a bond in the Team. I think beating Philly in a similar fashion this year could have a similar affect.
.....or not. Who knows?
Losing out would be tough to watch, but would be much better for the 2020 draft. Probably means at least one more year of below par football, however. Of course it could also mean coaching staff change and maybe that's a good thing.
Going 3-3 or 2-4 would be the worse case scenario as it hurts the draft slot but still shows lowsy football but not lowsy enough to "earn" a coaching change.
I can reluctantly live with Gettleman a little longer but Shurmur is out of his depth. They hired a guy who was a dreadful coach in Cleveland and now he’s been a dreadful coach here for two seasons.
I can’t take another minute of this guy but I’m convinced Mara will look for any reason to keep him.
Here is my fear:
Giants beat Miami, Washington and maybe Chicago and Shurmur is retained. “We finished strong, players didn’t quit, blah blah”.
Next year they spend a bunch of money, another premium draft pick and manage to go 6-10, 7-9. Now Shurmur has shown more improvement, we’re really going somewhere right?
2021-22 he gets us all the way to 8-8! Maybe a fake playoff race. Hoo boy, this is exciting stuff, where’s my heart medication?
2022-23 they regresa back to 6-10/7-9: “Everyone is on notice..”
2023-24, back to 4-12, 3-13, Shurmur is finally shown the door. Saquon’s career is nearly over, Jones is into his big contract and the team is otherwise right where we are today.
Shurmur needs to go now. If it takes six more losses I can live with it. Go Bears, Eagles, etc. I can’t stand to look at this guy anymore.
Now if they fire him tomorrow I’ll root for some more wins, but that won’t happen.
Get rid of Shurmur who is just awful as a HC in every aspect of the game.
This team needs a Top 5 pick...more like Top 3.

One player cannot turn a franchise around. I think some folks misremember the LT situation. He came into a defense that already had a lot of talent.

This.
The coaching staff needs to go. The last thing this organization needs is empty wins that the front office sells as progress to keep the staff around.
It’s not about solo Young. It’s Young-Williams-Lawrence-Tomlinson/Hill plus Golden and/or another FA. THAT can turn the defense around.
or #1...
but not quite...haven't clinched tiebreak over WAS, although it is almost certain
"I don't trust anything I read on the internet, so provide a link with every post"
Too many:
"The Maras have been incompetent for so long that now its time to lose completely because once they have more important choices this time they will respond faster and better."
We want less and less and less risk. Until what we see is at least a watchable variation of a game we used to like
My feelings exactly. I never root against them during a game, but if they lose, its "oh well, a better draft slot". And its approaching the point where I wish for them to lose out … but never during a game.
I am all in on buh-bye to DG and PS but this team needs more than just one player. Need to trade down for 4-5 players.
