Kaden Smith: Is this anything?

Beezer : 11/27/2019 12:11 pm
With a nod to the old Letterman bit, I'm curious to see what BBI thinks. He appeared in the spotlight for the first time Sunday, scoring a TD against the Bears. Ended up with 5 receptions on 6 targets, all pretty short-yardage, but he also played 98% of the snaps, increasing from 39 snaps against the Jets to 59 against the Bears.

He's 22, a Stanford guy (we seem to like these smart young fallows) ... at very least it's interesting.

But beyond that , Kaden Smith: Is this anything?

He looks a little like George Kittle

So he's got that going for him.
He looked pretty good.

With Rngram out, why not give the rook a chance to show what he's got? I can't say I took note of his blocking, but Spielman seemed to indicate he was pretty solid there.

I'm not sure he's a starter, but certainly could be a good rotation guy.
The 49ers let him go ...

was just wondering if there might be potential there, considering who was playing ahead of him at Frisco. Tough to hang onto two guys at TE who are alphas.

I'm hoping. Blindly, yes. lol But hoping, nonetheless.

So you think San Francisco waived a player
Mike from Ohio : 11/27/2019 12:23 pm : link
because he was an alpha instead of just having a really good backup? Why would anyone do that?

It is way too early to say he is anything or nothing. He was a 6th round pick who was waived by his team after less than a year. I don't expect much but hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Move
AcidTest : 11/27/2019 12:38 pm : link
the chains guy with good hands who may be able to block as a TE. No speed.
I actually think there is a chance there may be something there
NY-Fan : 11/27/2019 12:44 pm : link
He may turn out to be a pretty good signing.
Lunch pail TE?
nzyme : 11/27/2019 12:55 pm : link
I'll buy. We need that. I miss guys like Boss, Ballard, etc. Good blockers who can do a little in the passing game.
at this point

that's what they need to be figuring out. He doesn't need to be Kittle to be valuable. If he could produce at Ellison's level, he'd be a solid #2 TE, but even that's a long shot for a 6th round pick.
He moves like a left tackle

why not?
HomerJones45 : 11/27/2019 1:03 pm : link
we've got junk now one quasi-te aside. Guy comes from a team with a proven eye for talent that seems to be a decent judge of tight end. Ellison and his 7 million dollar cap hit will be jettisoned so if Smith shows anything, he can stick

I don't.

I said I'm blindly hoping. :)

Hoping he turns out to be a diamond in the rough. Would be nice to get one of those like we see others teams doing, occasionally.

TE Garrett Dickerson is a healthy scratch. Giants really like Kaden Smith, which is why they swiped him off waivers from the Niners. But Dickerson had an excellent training camp. Was injured the first three weeks, but still. Last week played no offense. Today a healthy scratch
High 6th round pick be SF
ZogZerg : 11/27/2019 1:47 pm : link
I think he was projected to go higher.
Giants obviously like him from the draft.

I think he could turn out to be a decent player.

Just regular
I got a little excited

He seemed to run hard, like the greatest - Bavaro.

Seemed solid in blocking.

Looks like an old school, mean TE.
If he's a good blocker
bc4life : 11/27/2019 3:16 pm : link
He'll be part of the solution
I think we'll see more of him the next 5 weeks
fame56 : 11/27/2019 4:20 pm : link
and he'll be around next spring to compete for a spot on next year's 53

Perfect, we need one of those. Extend him now.
Is he an adult?

Or was he a captain?
I would ask this of
SirLoinOfBeef : 11/27/2019 9:17 pm : link
Evan Engram.
He could be another productive Stanford TE
Jay on the Island : 11/27/2019 11:24 pm : link
I was not a fan of Dickerson, Simonson, or Tomlinson as the backup TE but I am very intrigued by Karen Smith. We know he’s smart and the scouting reports suggest that he is a very solid blocker. He looked good versus the Bears and we will see him continue to receive plenty of playing time.

I still hope they add another TE at some point in the draft but Kaden Smith might be the long term compliment to Engram. He will make Ellison expendable this offseason as he basically offers a similar skill set at a far lower price.
Combine stats include 4.92 40

Quandry about recruiting blocking tight ends
idiotsavant : 11/28/2019 9:50 am : link
Is that if you look at draft prospect leaders, they tend to be 230-245 lbs with the occasional 255lber.

Looking for that "extra linesman" type, those with the tweener body type, those seem to be coming out if college as 3/4 D ends at about 275-295lbs and 6'5" or so.

So, RJ Macintosh, - your a tight end!
Preseason I was thinking
idiotsavant : 11/28/2019 9:54 am : link
Convert freedom Akinmouladune during practice squad to a TE. Heavy, good 3 cone, long arms , athletic.
If you look at Howard cross standing next to
idiotsavant : 11/28/2019 9:56 am : link
Carl banks. Howard dwarfs Carl.

It's been reversed in today's ball so the blocking is dicey.
Of course he has enough to be an adequate starter
Bob in Newburgh : 11/28/2019 12:16 pm : link
If he is a football player and works his butt off.

Based on physical gifts as measured by combine performance, it is highly unlikely/

He is tall, decently built.

He is slow, not quick and lacks core power. Probably a one-trick pony who can get you a deep seam against single coverage when paired with a QB who throws an accurate deep ball.
If Belichick were coaching our current motley crew
CT Charlie : 11/28/2019 12:44 pm : link
Evan Engram would be a TE who occasionally blocks, and our TE's would block well and catch the occasional first-down pass when the defense forgets to cover them.
