Anyone else feel like we don’t have players to root for?

exiled : 12/1/2019 7:34 am
My interest in football is definitely waning, for the first time in almost 50 years. For me, it’s less about the losing and more about missing a core of players that I look forward to watching every week. I mean, I was truly weaned as a fan on bad football. But man was it easy to root for those defenses in the ‘70s. I like a few individual players: Barkley, Jones. But everyone else? Meh.

In no way do I feel like I’m rooting for a team.
There really is not a team identity

Jones is really fun to watch. But it just seems like the team does not know what it wants to do.
Jones
Mark from Jersey : 12/1/2019 7:38 am : link
Barkley Slayton. Few of the young guys on D.
This season obviously sucks
Ned In Atlanta : 12/1/2019 7:39 am : link
But long term I think guys like Love, Connelly, Slayton, Baker, Dexter Lawrence, Ximines etc could become good players down the road. I think we’re all understandable pissed right now. My biggest concern is with the owner who doesn’t seem to have a clue. I think his ego is too big to bring in a fresh set of eyes and an unfamiliar perspective
There are 53 of them to root for
Jimmy Googs : 12/1/2019 7:39 am : link
same as every other team if you choose to go elsewhere
They are young
mdthedream : 12/1/2019 7:53 am : link
and when they get stronger faster and smarter there will be a lot to rout for. They will also add veterans in the off season with the money they have. So you have to be patient with this team. Yes watch Jones and hope that he is the QB that I believe he is a stud future franchise guy. The Barkley thing is what has fans down this year and it has been a very hard season for him.
We lack a personality for sure
SGMen : 12/1/2019 7:56 am : link
I put that on the coaching staff, especially Shurmur.

Up until last night I thought Shurmur would get a 3rd year for sure but now I don't see how that is possible given his record and the "feel" of this team.

I also can't see how we can win today against a "real" NFL QB. The fact that the line is -6.5 boggles my mind as I'd figure -7 at worst.

Packers 27-17 today.
Some of you guys are hilarious
Tuckrule : 12/1/2019 8:00 am : link
This team won a super bowl in 2011. We are not he Knicks. We have won 2 championships in the last 12 years. So we have a few losing seasons and now people lose interest etc. clearly your a fair weather fan. To say your losing interest when we just drafted our franchise qb is lunacy. Is this what you said in 2003 also???

I think the issue is not that the team hasn't won a championship since 2011... but that the team has basically been near the bottom for a while. It would be nice to have something to root for after Thanksgiving one day. Our season has been over after 8 games for a while now.
Its all really about being non-competitive
Jimmy Googs : 12/1/2019 8:06 am : link
for almost the whole decade...
Nah, don't feel that way
Model4001 : 12/1/2019 8:09 am : link
We got a few players to root for (Barkley, Jones).

I'm more worried about Barkley's talents being wasted on a crappy team with no line, never reaching his true potential. A player of his ability deserves way more than that.
The team has been an unmitigated disaster

since October 2012, absent one mirage season in '16.

You didn’t read my post, did you. It was only a few sentences.

I think it s very similar to the late 70 s when they had guys like Simms, Carson, George Martin, that we didn t know were going to be fire guys

Odd timing, why last night?

Guys, geez auto correct
The issue is there is no long-term plan..
Sean : 12/1/2019 8:33 am : link
After letting go of Coughlin, McAdoo & Shurmur we’re both hired to win with Eli. The team wasn’t built to win again with Eli.

This team desperately needs a head man who will build a culture, identity & program. It isn’t Shurmur. I think any of these guys will bring excitement:

Jim Harbaugh
Matt Rhule
Josh McDaniels

Once we start seeing a real identity, I think the mood will really change here. Going 7-9 with an identity & something to really build on is much different than a lifeless 2-9 team.
Very young team
Rjanyg : 12/1/2019 8:36 am : link
With a lack of superstars it may seem like we have no difference makers, but I see some very good building blocks.

Jones, Barkley, Slayton, Hernandez are all very young building blocks that have been giving their all. All of them seem very mature and are only getting better with every game they play.

Dex Larwrence seems to be fixture on the DL for years to come. Along with Tomlinson and Williams is a solid interior group.

Golden has had a great season. He is a total effort player and it is great for the young Carter and Ximines to be around.

Connelly, while not playing because of injury, looks to me like a building block. The kid has obvious instincts and can tackle and blitz.

The 3 young CB in Baker, Beal and Ballentine have loads of ability and the playing time they are getting is huge for next year.

I happy that Julian Love is finally getting some PT, as I think he may have the most instincts of all the new DB’s.

Lots to root for, just need to scout a little bit and learn about these players because many will be here for a few years.
What I’m missing is even just a few players
exiled : 12/1/2019 8:37 am : link
who play well TOGETHER. Not the at the lines, not really at special teams. The receiving corps sucks. Even DJ and Saquon don’t play well together.

You’re right especially about this. The team needs more of it. Hopefully these guys (and some others you mentioned) will play solidly on the team for more than a season or two. Because I was feeling this way about guys like Collins and Beckham.

Always loved those guys on D during the ‘70s. Hopefully you’re right.
Practice.....
thrunthrublue : 12/1/2019 8:54 am : link
Our offense and defense, are both close to dead last in every category including winning.....so, these two loser units practice against each other during the week, that is why the games begin by getting out played, and out scored because neither unit has seen speed and determination during the week....its a self perpetuating downward spiral only fixed by changes to the entire culture, scouting, coaching, drafting, management.....if not, then get used to the self demolition fan world of 2 and 14.
The baby boomers fans favored the Giants due to their defense
George from PA : 12/1/2019 9:05 am : link
Outside of Peppers, Lawrence, maybe Williams which are meh....the core guys are on Offense lead by Barkley and Jones.

The Giants desperately need a difference maker on defense....

Chase Young

If we could get Chase Young it would be the cornerstone piece we need on the front 7. You need players that are elite to garner attention and help accentuate the rest of the team.
That's what these last 2 years have been about exiled.
mittenedman : 12/1/2019 9:23 am : link
There are some good draft picks being compiled that will hopefully be here for a long time. Not a lot of studs but some solid pieces. They are still building a core and trying to do it the right way.

Coaching in the NFL is huge. The Giants would be a lot more fun to watch if they were coached better.
What about rooting for a medicine cabinet like
M.S. : 12/1/2019 9:24 am : link

Evan Engram?
Chase Young?

Is that the guy I saw get pretty easily neutralized yesterday?
I like Jones and Barkley
truebluelarry : 12/1/2019 10:36 am : link
but its difficult to appreciate them with such an awful surrounding cast. I am just hoping the make it through the final stretch run healthy so they can come back primed for a good 2020 season (especially Barkley, who I'd personally shelve for the remainder of this season.)
This
cokeduplt : 12/1/2019 12:13 pm : link
Is just a crybaby thread. They’re 2-9 they are bad of course it’s hard to watch/root for them. There isn’t anything that can make a bad team easy to root for.
Jones and Barkley are potentially good to root for
Coach Red Beaulieu : 12/1/2019 12:20 pm : link
but you know Shemur is regressing them and getting them killed.
Actually the players are all I’m rooting for
Giants4Life : 12/1/2019 1:19 pm : link
I’d like to see them all do well and get better and stay healthy ...
especially all the young ones
I'm rooting for our secondary, L. Williams whom we traded for
SGMen : 12/1/2019 1:52 pm : link
and the rest of the defensive youth.

I can see FS Bethea, LB K. Martin and even CB Jenkins cut at season's end due to age, salary. We have money to add UFA's and also the draft. I'd like to keep Jenkins if he is willing to take a paycut.
Plenty of guys, and still
