How can Mara sell running this back?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 12/1/2019 5:45 pm
I just got off the phone with my old man, a man who suffered from 64-81. 'This is just as bad. I don't even know what to say. This isn't good. I don't know how this Gettleman guy and Shurmur survive.'

So, let's say it's December 30th, & Mara brings these two back. How does he justify it?

I'm not saying this is what happens. I think Shurmur is probably a goner, but DG is likely to be brought back, despite his horrible free agent track record & his so so drafts.

I really fear DG with $ to burn & hiring another coach.
He can’t-

Shurmur is gone, but does he trust Gettleman with a top 3 pick and money to spend?

is already burying Shurmur - Papa, Banks and Diehl have been getting more and more critical the past few weeks.

They'll throw Shurmur overboard, get another coach, claim progress has been made and they think coaching is the issue, then 2 years from then when no progress has been made Gettleman will retire and Abrams will take over.
DG isn’t going anywhere

As much as I loathe that cocksucker, he’s staying. Mara is petrified to be forced into blowing it all up so soon. I do think there is an outside shot Mara brings the whole crew back for one more go, albeit with a sacrificial lamb to the hungry masses: Bettcher. Then, when we go 5-11 or worse next year (again), he finally pulls the plug on both DG and the Shurminator.
DG will be back

Next year and if it’s the probable shitshow, announce his retirement before being canned
Mara has probably seen enough of Murmur
Paulie Walnuts : 12/1/2019 6:12 pm : link
If Murmur had made any PROGRESS , he would be back, but this team has regressed..
How does he justify it?
EricJ : 12/1/2019 6:17 pm : link
He has Shurmur priming the excuses already by saying we have a young team.

Then, Mara will also point to a rookie QB.

"I am really not happy with the results. I made that clear to both our GM and coach. However, although it cannot be seen on the scoreboard, I do believe this team is making progress. We knew this was not going to be easy and it is not going to be fixed in one year."

then if they stink again is it ok for the stability to be overlooked

the Rams did it...they didn't believe in there coached and switched with a young QB. If shurmur isn't he guy then just make the move now.

Also DG and Shurmur should be tied at he hip...DG shouldn't survive this if this was a smart organization.

so then the next GM is sattled with a coach he wasn't invovled in hiring...that is stupid
This isn't as bad as 64-81, it's worse.
Red Dog : 12/1/2019 6:32 pm : link
Really, it's worse.

A GIANTS fan since 1955.
I suffered through the losing of the 60's & 70's as well
steve in ky : 12/1/2019 6:45 pm : link
And while the losing feels similar to that I feel a lot better about the team moving forward than I did those teams.

I like a lot of the young talent, and if they had a good coaching staff they would be much improved from where they currently are. This staff is about as bad as it gets and many of these losses are on them. This next coaching hire will be huge for this organization because they can't afford to get this one wrong again.

IMO this all goes back to Mara panicking at the thought of losing McAdoo to a division rival and jumping the gun hiring him before he was truly ready to be a HC. That decision made the Coughlin exit rushed and awkward and now looks like a terrible turning point downward for this organization. It has been one bad chain of events since that moment. Coughlin might have been long in the tooth but the organization turned reminiscent of the 70's once they parted ways. IMO Mara took where they had been the past decade for granted, and replacing TC should have been more thought out and diligent in finding the right replacement.

Can't say enough how big the decision of who the next HC is to this organization.

Let’s

Remember murmur has said behind the scenes they are improving. Mara has access to behind the scenes. So, if he sees all this progress behind the scenes, who are we to question Mara for keeping him. 😀

If he buys this and next season the same. Then mara would really be considered an incompetant owner for good. Does mara risk that all on the line?
It to nit pick
joeinpa : 12/1/2019 7:02 pm : link
But 81 was a pretty good season, one of my favorites, it was the beginning of the turnaround even though 82 and 83 were poor seasons

Beating the Eagles in Philly in the play offs is still one of my favorite Giant wins.

Yeah that was a good season. And Rob Carpenter who joined the team that season was one of my favorites. I can't even describe how much I enjoyed him run the ball as a NY Giant.
Lots of folks here are wringing their hands
an_idol_mind : 12/1/2019 7:40 pm : link
over what Mara might do. I think it's a waste of time.

I have no doubt that Mara would like to bring Shurmur back, but Shurmur has basically destroyed any chance of that. The team no has to win out just to get to 6-10--a high point for Shurmur's career. If he comes back next year, mark me down as amazed.

Next week will probably bring the season's ninth straight loss, tying the franchise record for longest losing streak. Both of the previous times this happened (1976 and 2003-2004) rightly cost the coaches their jobs.

I disagree with the folks who think that Mara will sit back and take this losing. He kept Coughlin and Reese too long, admittedly, but they had won multiple championships. Shurmur doesn't have that sort of credit.

I feel like Shurmur had a very low bar to declare this season a success, and he still botched it.
We don't know that Shurmur was DG's first choice for HC
GeofromNJ : 12/1/2019 8:33 pm : link
Moreover, if Shurmur is fired, DG will likely make the decision as to who to hire, in which case, the GM and HC should be on the same page. This is not to say that have confidence in DG to either hire a coach or draft, trade, and sign free agents.
Big difference between 60s-70s and now
Giants86 : 12/1/2019 10:15 pm : link
I free agency back then
Took much longer to build team and if you screwed up the draft you were doomed.

This is exactly what will happen.

They'll have a big fake dog and pony show again where Ernie returns as a consult in hiring a new GM and big surprise...he'll recommend Abrams.
'This is just as bad. 64-81

It's not for two reasons. It hasn't gone on nearly as long. There are signs the roster is improving including having found their QB for the next decade.
