Chris Spielman Comments on Barkley Question

St. Jimmy : 12/1/2019 8:27 pm
I would assume it was Spielman who said Barkley was tipping away pass plays by looking over the defense to identify his blocking assignment. They showed a clip of him looking around pre-snap while discussing it implying it was a pass play. I don't remember them showing running play to show what he did on a running play.

What was your take on this? Any truth to this? Anyone ever notice anything like this?
I have to go back and look

but I'd trust Spielman because he was a hell of a linebacker in college and in the pros. He wasn't the biggest guy, but he was very productive, so I'd think that in his past experiences that was one of the tells that he'd look for. That's a detail thing which a heady player like a Spielman would pick out. And a detail that I'd expect a coach on the Giants to point out to keep Barkley from doing that...but alas, that's far too much to ask.

I remember years ago going to a Giants game with a friend of mine who was an assistant coach at University of Texas. He was correctly calling run or pass on pretty much every play based on the way Shockey was lining up and where he looked before the snap. He couldn't believe no one coached him out of it because it was so obvious to someone who knew to look for it.

It was the Giants vs. Texans game in 2006. So it was actually Coughlin and Mike Pope. I'd be surprised if either of those guys weren't aware of this, and maybe Shockey just didn't take to the coaching. But I was stunned that he literally called it pretty much every play and he was getting frustrated by it. This was sitting in the stands watching the game.
Very comforting that the tv analyst picked this up

Yes, I heard it...
EricJ : 12/1/2019 8:48 pm : link
he said when Barkley is preparing to pass protect, he scans back and forth across the defense to see who he needs to pickup.

However, when it is a run play, he looks just straight ahead...

How the fuck do our coaches not pick this up.

You know I noticed he did this, but never put two and two together, but I also don't watch film on them non stop. Unfuckingbelievable.

Yeah, that should have been the smoking gun for Mara.
When I heard that and they showed Barkley scanning I was surprised

that something so simple would be obvious to defenses. Scan every play Saquon. SMH

Too busy in the weeds of offensive playcalls to button down tells like this.
I went back and watched 4 or 5 series from the Bears game.

I didn't see anything definitive. When Jones is under center, he always looked straight ahead as far as I could tell. That was always run or play action. Shotgun he always seemed to be looking over the defense. Maybe he was looking a bit less if he was going out for a passrunning vs. staying in to block. I wouldn't be able call what they were doing based on what Barkley was looking at. That's also the television feed which isn't showing him all the time.
didn't Barkley get hit in his helmet with

a pass yesterday? Maybe unrelated, but seeing that made me question who is getting this guy prepared.

DJ threw the pass early because he was about to get sacked
Other details our coaches ignore that gives opponents advantages:

Our center bobbing his head right before the snap.
Our RG doing some little bounce right before the snap.

Shurmur was a center, why does he allow this shit?
