The Giants are the 14th oldest team

Les in TO : 12/2/2019 6:40 am
Shurmur made the comment recently that the Giants are a young team going through growing pains. The Giants are in fact the 18th youngest team/14th oldest team. These are not spring chickens running around aimlessly during a youth led rebuild . This is a veteran team. Do you trust Gettleman with free agency this year given his dismal record in bringing in vets?

1) What happens when you drop Eli, DeOssie and Bethea? I think we all agree this list wont be around next year?

All are above 35 years old, so even vets of "25" take 30 years off the total

2)Jenkins and Remmers?

I think many of us would be ok with these assets replaced or traded?

3) Shepard?

This concussion vulnerable vet may retire?

Is it reasonable to suspect the average age is a year away from dropping further?

Eli and DeOssie are now not playing so is it valid that there are a bunch of young folks starting out there, especially on defense, even if the team math currently lines up as it does??

That is a bit of an aberration......as the Giants future is very young
George from PA : 12/2/2019 6:49 am : link
Antoine Bethea is not long for this team, neither is Remmers.

Remove DeOssie and Eli....I suspect this team becomes one of the youngest...real quick.
Unless DG goes crazy

In FA which I don’t think he will the Giants are going to add another 10 1st year players and lose Eli probably DeOssie Ogletree and Jenkins and Bethea at that point their will probably be about 35 1st second and third year players ...... to me next year should be the last big purge of players otherwise there’s no consistency...... Get a new coach and then go with the players you got
Several weeks ago, someone posted rookie snap counts. The Giants
Ira : 12/2/2019 6:53 am : link
lead the league and it wasn't close. Since that time, Love, Beal (who is really a rookie) and Ballentine have seen action.
All good points above

Some but not all of the vets who are mentioned were Gettleman acquisitions who have failed miserably here. With the Giants poised to be a big shopper in free agency, that does not bode well
So we’re not “historically young”?
The_Boss : 12/2/2019 7:32 am : link
Fucking Shurmer....the guy would fuck up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
This is a very young team when you factor the contributions
SLIM_ : 12/2/2019 7:34 am : link
That is the one thing they have going for them.

It is actually amazing how much money they have invested in people who do not provide much contribution. The dead space, Eli, Solder, Ogletree, etc.

This is a key offseason. If we do it right (add veteran leadership AND talent at key positions - ILB, OT, C) and stay away from injuries, I think we can make the playoffs next year.
It doesn't matter

there is NO excuse for being the worst team in the NFL, a strong case could be made the Giants are and they have the most losses since 2017.

Shurmur told us all many times last year he inherited a 3 win team. Well, this group will be lucky to win three this year. Where is the improvement? Where isbthe evidence of program building? Where are some fucking wins.

To be the worst in the NFL is hard to do.

I suspect there's probably a few examples of these older outliers to the average team age across multiple teams in the NFL, including some that are already profiling as younger than the Giants.

But the rookie snap count part is undeniable and certainly more informative than the overall average age of the roster.
Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics
V.I.G. : 12/2/2019 8:16 am : link
the roster might be 14th oldest.
Starters are the youngest.
And the old starters should be benched.
This is a young team
Rory : 12/2/2019 8:23 am : link
80% of the starters are 28 years old or younger.

Yes, I believe the Giants had about 750 more rookie snaps than the team with the second most. It has to be over 1000 at this point.
Just look at the starters - that is where the stat comes from

Whatever the age mix...

we’re one of the least talented teams in the NFL.
I don't care if we trot out a team of infants
Go Terps : 12/2/2019 8:50 am : link
It's a pathetic excuse from a pathetic coach in a pathetic organization that excels at excuses.
It doesn't matter if we're young or old
WillieYoung : 12/2/2019 8:51 am : link
What matters is we're bad and not getting better
What’s killing the Giants
NikkiMac : 12/2/2019 8:59 am : link
Is QB play Oline inconsistent bad secondary play and Shurmurs strange calls and inability to get the ball to Barkley in space and maybe the worst set of receivers in the NFL except Slayton shows promise and to me there are better slot receivers than Shepard ..... the lone bright spot is ever since they got Williams they’re crushing the run imo
They have no
moaltch : 12/2/2019 9:58 am : link
linebackers. And haven't for years. Its hard to judge the d-line when there are no lbs to fill the gaps as they take on blocks. I thinks if you get "professional" backers, you'll see better assessments of the d-line.
a lot of those old guys

are expensive too.
Rookie snaps
Thegratefulhead : 12/2/2019 2:05 pm : link
When he is talking young, he speaking directly to the amount of snaps taken by rookies.
I don't care how young they are.
Matt M. : 12/2/2019 2:13 pm : link
There is no evidence of them being properly coached. This most glaring in the secondary, where all their young players seem to be making the same mistakes over and over each week. There is no evidence of this being corrected or of progress. There is no evidence of in game adjustments. There is no evidence of a clear and coherent plan. If they F-up this off-season, with yet another top 5 pick, I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel for several years to come.
The Giants are the 14th oldest team
Torrag : 12/2/2019 2:13 pm : link
les it's not aggregate age that matters. It's the number of players age 24 or under relied upon in key roles.
