End of 3rd Quarter vs. End of Game Scores

PersonalFoul : 12/2/2019 9:26 am
I noticed that we are in a lot of games at the end of the 3rd quarter that end up losing, and some end up looking like blow outs. Was wondering if some better football minds than me could put some perspective on this?

Examples at end of 3Q:

GB 17 NYG 13
Cowboys 16 NYG 15
Jets 24 NYG 27
Lions 24 NYG 19
Patriots 21 NYG 14

of this during his season ending meeting with Johnny Boy.
I don't see anything positive in this

Most NFL games are close and won or lost in the 4th Quarter. If anything it's an indictment.
Our D gasses out by then, so close games become blowouts.

Or DJ turns it over, which hurts our gassing D even more.

I noticed the difference is at halftime

We are usually doing well at Half time....

And it seems, every other team make adjustment at halftime....to seperate themselves....and pull away for the win.

Which is squarely on the coaches

the McGregor-Mayweather fight when I see this.

Give the illusion that you are competitive. The team favored to win takes you lightly for a while.

But when the better team is ready to put you away, it happens 90/95% of the time and they get their KO.

You can always say you were "in" the fight if it goes into the 9th or 10th round. But did you really believe you were going to win? No.

Did you give the opponent any reason to truly make them worry? No.

At no point in the game yesterday did the Giants make the Packers believe they would lose. They weren't under duress.

It's the only thing I can compare it to. I see it in boxing a lot.
I say bad coaching.

When crunch time comes, the opposing team cuts right through the Giants. The team has no answer offensively or defensively.

It should also be noted that some of these scores could have been better for the Giants had the team been more disciplined. There was no excuse at all for the Giants not to be in control of the second Cowboys game, for example.
It was odd yesterday that when they were in it

in the 1st and 2nd quarters I was happy they looked like they were competing (though so frustrated with the defense and no pass rush and the secondary running around looking like the Keystone cops) then it got to the 3rd and I was so pissed that they were competing and that this might save Shurmurs job. Then realized that even if he loses his job this offseason who's to say the next HC won't be just as big a joker.....Mara's losing fans.
It's a 4th Quarter league

Teams that are well-coached win. Teams that aren't lose.

Teams that are coached by Pat Shurmur get blown out and come to the podium armed with excuses.
Yeah

The D runs out of gas. And they don't have much in the tank to begin with,
There are turning points in every game in the 2nd half....
penkap75 : 12/2/2019 9:58 am : link
were you actually can see the D morale being crushed, and players just start giving up, not hustling, and making business decisions.
We get close

But I so rarely feel we’re really a threat. We seem to usually scratch and claw, go on 4th down, overcome a mistake to get a score, maybe just a FG.

The other team drives no problem, takes few risks, maybe they get a hold and stall a drive. No problem. Sooner or later we blow a coverage, we miss a tackle, we commit the killer penalties, and they take or expand the lead and leave us behind to press, give up turnovers, and give up sacks.
Is it really anything more than the longer a good team plays
Jimmy Googs : 12/2/2019 10:36 am : link
a bad team, time will most often allow the good team to prevail?
It is a combination of the offense with too many 3 and outs and the
SterlingArcher : 12/2/2019 11:40 am : link
defense not being able to get off the field on 3rd down. When the 4tt quarter rolls around the defense is gassed.
This is typical of bad teams
UberAlias : 12/2/2019 11:41 am : link
Banks used to say when playing bad teams, give them what they came for. Bad teams expect to lose --don't let them hang around make a few plays and build confidence. Once things start to move away from NYG, they where it leads. It may not always happen right away, but give it time, it usually will. That's what we're seeing here.
This was a source of great comfort

yes the D cant get off the field.
Gettledogman : 12/2/2019 11:48 am : link
DJ has had us in the games wo a viable running game all year but yeah blame the QB lol. The coaching seems to be lacking too. But mostly the D fails to get off the field as the game goes along. Excellent post.
FYI Aaron Rodgers said it himself post
Gettledogman : 12/2/2019 11:50 am : link
game interview. The Giants seemed to be in all games the played all season until the end. This ias not like last year where we got blown off the field right away -it takes 3 qtrs. now lol. Keep adding talent and get a better fundamental coaching staff. This team will improve.
4th and 10!

first down says what you need to know about the D
I was thinking about this last night too

4th quarter melt downs are usually a sign of:

a. inexperienced QB play when the game is on the line
b. exhausted pass rushers and poor DL depth
c. problems in coverage, both LBs and DBs

Check
Check
Check
