It has been reported on the French news here late this morning that Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin has been in contact with Bob Hartley about his interest in the head coaching job in Montreal.
Montreal's gutless owner who bows down to everything that the French press says and reports here is once again searching for a coach who speaks French.
I just cannot understand. What ever happened to hiring the best people who will get you wins? Not only does this limit the talent pool but gives validation that language and politics have a place in sports. Which they should never have.
English is only about 10% with French being around 80%
That is not the issue for me. The issue is that a professional sports team limiting their pool of potential candidates to appease the media. I can guarantee you that most of the fans could care less as long as the team is winning.
Meanwhile you end up interviewing Bob Hartley.
While I put zero faith in the rumors they're considering Hartley as a coach, or at least I hope they're not true, being French speaking is something that comes up too often for the Canadiens.
My hope is he's in Russia convincing Romanov he's ready for the NHL.
but people speaking French is rumored to have factored in to the Sergachev for Drouin trade, hiring the triplets (Vigneault, Therrien, and now Julien), trading Pacioretty (which worked out IMO personnel wise but didn't make the team better), and other decisions including playing players like Danault (who I like), Hudon, and others over other nationalities or even other Canadians.
I have no issue with pride in your country, but it's not helping them compete.
Attendance is down, spending is down, and the Canadiens have a ton of money tied up for a long, long time in aging veterans Price and Weber.
they are going to be a joke for a long time.

English like 99% of the population in Montreal. Or is it for press conferences for some grandpas in other parts of Quebec watching on TV?

But my question is what's the problem, why does he need to speak French? Is it for the non-Montreal Quebec that doesn't speak English? I was in Montreal in July and didn't meet a single person that didn't speak English in some capacity.

Honestly, you replace "French" and "white" and you're basically the most contemptuous political group of all time. How is this not considered supremacy?
Fans want to win, almost 100% don't care if the coach speaks French or not.

Quebec threatens to secede from Canada every few years.
they want their own sovereignty and absolutely consider themselves superior.
politicians and media especially, average citizens who I know not nearly as much if at all.
Keith Primeau's son for you hockey fans.
All Anglophones (English) who attend English school learn French from kindergarten to grade 11. I am fully bilingual as are my kids. Most of the last couple of generations of Anglophones are. Franophones (French) learn some English in school as well. Again it is only the last couple of generations that seem to have become bilingual. There are still a fair amount of Franophones that do not speak any English as it is not mandatory in the French school system like it is in the English school system.
The Allophones (new arrivals who have a natural third mother tongue language that is not English or French) are automatically placed in the French school system.
Separation is at an all time low. The younger generations tend to be more worldly and see the advantages of being bilingual and Canadian which ends up ruffling the feathers of the old timers who are still in power.
Needless to say. This who coaching and gm nonsense is only in hockey here. Our MLS soccer team does not seem to be in the same boat. Nor is our CFL team. This is a exclusive hockey shit show.

What do you mean? Sounds tribal, primitive. There's language and then there is race. They are not the same.
