What is the benefit of keeping Shurmur if he's a goner?

lawguy9801 : 12/2/2019 5:23 pm
If ownership has decided to can Shurmur (which seems likely based on what are surely leaks from the organization), why is he still the HC? How much worse would the team do if someone like Mike Shula (or someone else on the staff with HC experience at some level) took over for the last 4 games? I know, I know, we don't want to mess up our draft position, but I find it just about impossible to actually root for losses.
No point to making a change

Noone on the current staff should be in consideration for replacing him and the season is in the shitter. Rocking the boat now serves no purpose. May as well just play out the string as is.
'm hoping that hand eye coordination improves

with the ping pong table in the locker room...
Because the worst thing

That could get some interim guy who wins 2 games and people start saying, let’s keep him.
Good ole boy network

Shurmur is an NFL lifer, nephew of an NFL lifer. He'll get to save face and ride out the season before he's canned.

I know these guys are highly paid professionals, etc., but treating them with respect on their way out is probably a good thing.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I would have given Reese until year end in 2017.

100% agree, thats how you attract future coaches/players.

but no lets just cut and fire everyone because we're pissed off.

Moving on from Reese made sense with the timing - they might have hired the wrong guy to replace him, but given the need to assess the roster and prepare for the draft, the sooner you get the new GM in place the better.

The nfl schedule doesnt allow for it. While the playing season ends, the front office work starts. You would bring in you new GM while contracts have to be dealt with and the new regime has to decide on a short timeframe who to keep, who not to, and evaluate your entire roster. The more time they have, your think, the better.
Fair points, jcn/TTH.

I have a soft spot for Reese given the 2 SB's.
No one on the staff qualified to be interim HC.

Plus: Talent relations is a thing, and it's a thing that fans almost never think about. You want to get a top HC candidate? Don't make your organization look like a bad place to work.

McAdoo was fired during the season. Do that to Shurmur as well and top candidates (and their agents) are going to start to shy away. At best, that costs you money, as it makes agents hold out for more. At worst, it costs you the guys you want most.

The season's lost anyway — fire him on Black Monday. In the meantime the Giants should draw up lists and do whatever due diligence they can.
No way they need to watch him struggle and drag him

through the mud so people can keep pretending like he's the only problem.

How long until we see Mara insult him publicly?

While in most cases I agree, Mac and Reese deserved the disgraceful exit they were given. Fuck em. Mark Ross too.

And I'm glad they cant find a job.
Shurmur is now a Human Shield

He gets to stand in front of a room getting pummeled, day-in day-out. The moment they fire PS, thye Owner and GM will stand in front of a Room Getting Pummeled.

The Last time the Owner was "held Accountable in public" was when Eli was Benched...that led to Mackiedoobiedoo ghetting fired, along with Reese. Then, it was The New GM and HC reflecting the Owner's need to believe that The Team was Close and that Eli was still ready.

They are not going to take weeks of that abuse, especially at a time that so many eventual HC Targets are still coaching teams.
I'm fairly convinced Giants are intentionally tanking
Coach Red Beaulieu : 12/3/2019 2:49 am : link
Avoiding an obvious move to improve the team like taking play calling away from Shurmworm, and his brilliant jet sweep to a stockboy at a critical moment in the game.
I think he's staying...
nzyme : 12/3/2019 7:02 am : link
With some staff changes...most notably Defensive Coordinator. There's just too much left on his contract.
How about an OL coaching change?
gmenrule-va : 12/3/2019 10:18 am : link
I can't believe we hired the guy who was responsible for coaching the OL that pushed Andrew Luck into early retirement.
What would be the benefit of firing him now?
Matt M. : 12/3/2019 1:39 pm : link
There is not a single coach from this staff who I want retained or who seems remotely qualified to be a HC, even on the interim basis. So, what is the benefit of going this route? I say, the first order of business on Mon. 12/30 is to announce his firing. That is even being generous, just to give him one day to absorb the news and start packing. I would really tell him at approx. 4:15pm on 12/29 as the team enters the lockerroom following their 14th loss of the season.
