Recent Giants OL

Samiam : 12/2/2019 9:57 pm
Watching Seattle tonight with Fluker looking ok at RG. Saw somebody posted that Flowers is playing well at Washington. Bobby Hart is still starting for Cincinnati although that’s probably not saying much. I saw a game last week and Omameh (sp?) was subbing at LT and seemed like a player. I don’t remember the name of the RG the Giants signed halfway through the season last year who looked respectable. Whatever happened to him? I don’t know if it’s coaching or scheme and if it is, it’s more than 1 coach. And, I don’t know if I’m forgetting about anyone else. But, how are we so bad at OL and have been for a long time and some of these guys are clearly either adequate at their positions or have just gotten better with other teams?

Coaching Coaching! This staff hadn’t had anyone play to their full potential!
i've said it 100 times

it takes time for these guys to develop, this is why older savvy veteran lineman around the league are more successful.
Fluker and Brown were pretty good pick ups
Rjanyg : 12/2/2019 10:25 pm : link
And were solid players here.

Building an O Line is not easy to do but finding building blocks like Fluker and Brown is the key.

We pay Zeitler a good amount, 3 times the amount Fluker or Brown make.

We have decent guards right now. The key to building this line is to find a young Center and Tackle in the draft, sign a free agent stud for Right Tackle.

Solder will be back at Left Tackle.

I’d like to see this next year:

Solder, Hernandez, Creed Humphrey, Zeitler, Conklin
The problem wasn’t one of those guys wasn’t good enough
BillT : 12/2/2019 10:28 pm : link
The problem was we had 3 or 4 of them starting at the same time.

How lucky we are for that!

agree 100%.. Coaching.. The Giants coaching staff from top to bottom is shit. That's why many players that have left the Giants for another team, those players are doing better. Example Dovon Kennard.

how is it Solder was a foundation for a great Super Bowl franchise and the next year, with us, he stinks. Good enough for the Pats. Not good enough for the Jints..
This would span across three coaching staffs
TD : 12/2/2019 11:25 pm : link
Coughlin

McAdoo

Shurmur

we have posters saying on this site that Zeitler isn't a guy who could be a quality starter on a decent (winning) team. As though he hasn't already proven for years before 2019 that he is a quality OL and those are hard to come by in the today's NFL. Maybe (just maybe) Zeitler didn't all of a sudden forget how to play football but rather the Giants and their coaching staff and their organization as a whole just flat out suck.
It has to be a systemic problem
giantsFC : 12/3/2019 1:36 am : link
There is no way so many lineman have sucked or been injury prone on one team for so many years.

I get tired of the easy blame it on the lineman sucking when many of these guys do decently elsewhere

Don’t forget to add Newhouse to the list

"OK" isn't a ringing endorsement...

Also, it's not like Hernandez and Zeitler have nailed every block... Neither have been significantly better than Brown.
Why is our 28 year old 2014 2nd round draft pick playing for the

10-2 Niners? Giants couldn't afford to pay him because they had to pay Eli? Probably the usual suspects here were all for letting him go because we would have been overpaying him and you should never overpay a player, unless his name is Eli.

As for Richburg, he is the main unsung hero on the 49ers. As a center, Richburg has a lot of responsibilities in terms of blocking and being the mastermind of the offensive line. He’s the glue that is supposed to keep them together, which he has done a fantastic job of doing. Jimmy Garoppolo has been relatively unscathed through three games.

David Diehl was good enough at left tackle in 2011 playoffs.

Might the coaching staff have something to do with not fielding an even average offensive line although it's been a priority for six years.

Solder was not that good with the Pats either. Let's be real here. He absolutely sucks right now, but he was nothing special with the Patriots.
Another parallel with the 70's
GiantEgo : 12/3/2019 8:42 am : link
It was common in that era to see players the Giants released playing well for other teams. I keep reading here how terrible Richburg is yet he is the Center on a 10-2 team that is 2nd in the NFL in rushing.
Our problems are LT, C, RT
Chris684 : 12/3/2019 9:18 am : link
which is obviously a big deal, and probably contributing to Hernandez and Zeitler looking like less than what they are.
Coaching and scheme are extremely important

in Oline play. Especially when the Oline is lacking in talent.

cosmicj : 12/3/2019 9:22 am : link
Few seasons has been baffling, we had two OK players there, not all pros but ok, and let them both go in free agency, to trade for a better player who is also significantly more expensive (and older). I can’t make out the logic here. Hallmarks of a dysfunctional, overburdened organization.
In watching Hernandez over the past few games
gmenrule-va : 12/3/2019 10:15 am : link
he seems to be regressing. Maybe a by product of overall bad line play, or perhaps because our Center is terrible. That said, he has disappointed me this season.
They have
moaltch : 12/3/2019 11:22 am : link
all regressed. The ironic part is that everyone trashes Hunter, and rightfully so, but what about the fact that Shurmur was a center in college? You would think that he would add something positive to the o-line room? Between his play calling, and lack of player development, its time to say goodbye to all of them.
More Surprising to Me
Samiam : 12/3/2019 2:33 pm : link
Given Shurmur’s experience as a center, why wouldn’t he find a top notch coach for the offensive line?
HAL HUNTER SUCKS
Jint Fan in Buc Land : 12/3/2019 8:17 pm : link
This should be a pretty short thread. This is the third job in a row where his ol unit has been awful. There isn’t any nuance, you either believe he continuously has terrible luck professionally OR he’s bad at coaching up o lineman.

I get tired of the cheerleading that thinks its all on teh coaching when in fact many of us thought the G-Men needed to do much more with the OL after last season's debacle.

for example, Solder's strength wasn't run blocking, neither was Hernandez coming out of college, neither is Zeitler's strength of run blocking. Our center was thought to be a big problem and we have a bad but cheap RT. Yet we're supposed to be able to run the ball? That's right teh homers would say BECAUSE "Remmers' would be better than Wheeler ofc we'll have a solid run game. OFC halapio is better than Pulley it means w'ell have a sold run game. OFC Hernandez in his 2nd year won't level off because after all he's a Giants and the homers seem ot think only their drat picks get better. This type of blind homerism is pretty much a constant. Sure buddy - one person is all the problems. Keep living the dream.

What you had was a bunch of homers that think DG can do no wrong and they buy into his shtick. Instead let's blame it all on the HC. The same HC that DG hired. But ofc it's not DG's fault, right?
