Do you think they blast artificial "crowd noise" in Seattle?

Leg of Theismann : 12/2/2019 10:36 pm
Sorry I know there's a MNF thread for a game currently going on in Seattle and this could go there, but this is a very specific question I have always wondered and heard rumors about over the years.

It just seems like there would have been some sort of investigation if there was any possibility of truth here. Has anyone ever cited any proof of this claim? It does seem to get pretty damn loud there compared to other stadiums even when it's not necessarily a big moment in the game.

It would just be crazy if this were true because Seattle has always had such a major advantage at home due to the crowd noise and Seattle is a notoriously very difficult place for any opposing team to win. Obviously wouldn't seem fair if all of that was due to some artificial crap.

What do you guys think?
Funny you ask
Gregorio : 12/2/2019 10:47 pm : link
Because 10 minutes ago I thought the same thought. The crowd noise seemed artificially loud. I imagine a sound guy playing back crowd noise, through the PA, then gradually bringing it down with faders on a mixing board.
I've been to a few games there
myquealer : 12/2/2019 10:55 pm : link
and I think it's mostly the design of the stadium. The roof over the seats reflects the sound back down to the seats and field,. The noise and reputation gets the crowd amped up more and they get louder and louder. I don't think they pump noise in.
I've been there for a couple Sounders games

I don't think they pump the sound in unless MLS is doing it too, because that is the loudest stadium I've ever been in.
i think the giants should try it

If the Giants had 8 winning seasons in a row the crowd would be loud AF too. Winning cures a ton of ills.

MetLife (and previously Giants Stadium) have been quiet as hell for some time now, long before the Giants started this terrible stretch of losing and MetLife seems to get quieter every year I go regardless of how well the team is doing.

Especially compared to other teams' stadiums it's ridiculously quiet.

I remember it being super loud for the playoff run in 2000 (Ron Dixon running the opening kick back against the Eagles was the loudest I've ever heard a stadium got, I thought the building was going to implode lol), but I haven't heard it get very loud since then, certainly not to a point where it actually affects the opposing offense. It's sad.

Of course we've only had like 3 (?) home playoff games in the last 20 years, where those games super loud? Anyone? The game against Atlanta in 2011 for instance? Anyone? I'm seriously asking out of curiosity.
I just remembered
Leg of Theismann : 12/3/2019 1:07 am : link
I was at the WC game against the Panthers in 2005 and it definitely wasn't very loud, but then again they lost that game like 23-0 or something so there was literally nothing to cheer about the entire game. Probably the same could be said for the 2008 divisional playoff game against the Eagles (I wasn't at that one). I'm guessing 2011 WC game vs. the Falcons was the loudest MetLife specifically has gotten... Is that true? Frequent MetLife goers?
Stadium Design
FearTheHippo : 12/3/2019 7:01 am : link
If I remember correctly, Seattle designed the acoustics of the stadium to amplify crowd noise. I believe the league then banned other teams from following suit, but grandfathered Seattle's stadium in.

I was there on Sunday, and it was pretty loud. GO PACK GO! every 3rd down.

Stadium design probably a huge factor. MetLife has no walls, so nothing to contain the sound. It's a leaky tuna can. The one good thing that you can say about the stadium is that the Jets got what they wanted- a place without blue and red seats.
there was a Skins game there a few years back

and it sounded like a space ship taking off.

they kept PA system on and it started to feed back, clear as day
Stadium design plays a role, but the product on the field is a bigger

factor IMO.

Metlife was pretty loud for the 2011 playoff game vs the Falcons. Probably the loudest I've ever witnessed it.

The 2000 NFC Championship was the loudest I ever heard Giants stadium.

2008 was probably the loudest i've heard Giants stadium for an entire season.

One common factor, winning/successful teams.

Even the recent Superbowl teams weren't that good at home. 2007 team was the "Road Warriors".

And I realize "good" crowds should cheer on their team when they are losing, but man it grows tiresome. I scream on every defensive 3rd down, but defenses have not been good on 3rd down for years. I am usually losing my voice by the time I live the stadium, which I don't mind with a win, but its tough when they lose.

If they giants had a recent record like the seahawks (8 winning seasons in a row), the crowd would be completely different at Metlife.
I'm convinced crowd noise is piped in at MetLife too

I sit in an open section (no roof) with a direct line of sight to speakers, and I often hear artificial-sounding crowd noise at key moments in games.

I just assume everyone does it.
I have been to Century Link

twice. They definitely pump or reverb sound. It becomes painfully obvious during TV time outs.

The late season 2008 game against Carolina for the number 1 seed was insanely loud. I could tell because the television camera was shaking like crazy. I was so proud of Giants fans that night. Derek Ward went off for like 190 that game. I wish I had been there.
Noise level
giant power : 12/3/2019 10:44 am : link
It's stadium design. I have been to games in Seattle. The old Yankee Stadium was similar, not the 1976 redesigned model mind you. Yankee Stadium was much more cavernous than Seattle because it was designed for baseball, but it was extremely steep because of the steel columns. Those columns allowed the mezzanine and upper decks to hang completely over the lower deck. Fans were close to the action and the roof hung all the way over the stands thus, the crowd noise could not escape. The old Yankee Stadium crowd noise could be deafening. Seattle's stadium is also very steep with a roof yet, designed specifically for football. They thus achieve a similar result. It makes for one hell of a home field advantage.

Scyber-- Do you remember Ron Dixon running back the opening kick against the Eagles in the 2000 Divisional Playoff game? I was at both that game and also the NFCCG the following week, and while both games were extremely loud, that return kickoff for a TD was the loudest I ever heard Giants stadium get. It was just on a different level from what I remember. Just wondering if you remember that particular moment? That's the loudest moment I've ever heard any stadium or even concert I've ever been to.
