A little exercise I was pondering to gauge how far from being competitive the core of this roster is. Let's call it in the hunt for the playoffs next year. No opinion on how/why, just the results needed from the position.
What do you guys think the Giants need from these spots?
Players/positions where the incumbent performance can be counted on regularly = Good to Go
Players/positions where the team needs more production = Improve
Players/positions where the team needs a lot more production = Really Improve
QB Jones = Improve
RB Barkley = Improve
FB Penny = Good to Go
WR1 Tate = Improve
WR2 Slayton = Good to Go
WRSlot Shepard = Improve
OLT Solder = Really Improve
OLG Hernandez = Good to Go
C Halapio = Really Improve
ORG Zeitler = Improve
ORT Remmers (UFA) = Really Improve
TE1 Engram = Improve
TE2 Ellison = Improve
DE/DT Lawrence = Good to Go
DT Tomlinson = Good to Go
DE Williams (UFA) = Good to Go
DE Hill = Really Improve
OSLB Carter = Improve
ISLB Ogletree = Improve
ISLB Connely = Improve
EDGE Golden (UFA) = Good to Go
EDGE Ximines = Improve
SS Peppers = Improve
FS Bethea = Really Improve
CB1 Jenkins = Improve
CB2 Baker = Really Improve
CBSlot Ballentine = Really Improve
CBNickel Beal = Improve
K Rosa = Improve
P Dixon = Good to Go
LS Holba = Good to Go
We have some talent on this team. We also have some major holes and weaknesses.
For one, I can't believe how "average" to below average this OL is, especially run blocking. Some of the issues are scheme but our OT's plain old stink. Just horrid. We lack blocking TE's.
I havnt watched much of Flower boy much this year (have you?)
But Hernandez has definitely been a disappointment.

Hernandez is not good. Ereck Flowers is better than him. haha... So I'm told

The whole left side has been a huge disappointment. Actually the whole line... even Zeitler whose suppose to be all pro has looked average to me.
Coaching perhaps?
QB Jones = Improve
RB Barkley = Improve
FB Penny = Good to Go
WR1 Tate = Improve
WR2 Slayton = Good to Go
WRSlot Shepard = Improve
OLT Solder = Really Improve
OLG Hernandez = Good to Go Improve

TE1 Engram = Improve
TE2 Ellison = Improve
DE/DT Lawrence = Good to Go
DT Tomlinson = Good to Go
DE Williams (UFA) = Good to Go
DE Hill = Really Improve As a backup in the rotation, good to go, not so much as a starter
OSLB Carter = Improve Really Improve
ISLB Ogletree = Improve Really Improve
ISLB Connely = Improve Until he shows he has returned, not sure he should be penciled in... If he hasn't returned to form, then this needs to be Really Improved
EDGE Golden (UFA) = Good to Go In my mind, Golden should be the #2 ER on the team, not the primary. as the #2 ER he is Good To Go, but ER as a whole needs to be Improved to Really Improved
EDGE Ximines = Improve Ximines is just a rotational guy IMO, he should not be the #1 or #2 ER... I wouldn't even list him
SS Peppers = Improve
FS Bethea = Really Improve
CB1 Jenkins = Improve
CB2 Baker = Really Improve
CBSlot Ballentine = Really Improve
CBNickel Beal = Improve
K Rosas = Improve Return to last years form... Yes, I am assuming this year is an aberration
P Dixon = Good to Go
LS Holba = Good to Go
We have a long way to go talent wise to become competitive again. No doubt our coaching staff sucks but so does our talent level.
My view is if a guy falls in the "really improve" bucket there's a good chance, he needs to be replaced. Unless a guy is a rookie, what's the likelihood he's going to do a 180?
Living in DC area I’m subjected to skins games.
I’m not giving up Hernandez for Flowers but Skins won’t be making that swap either. They are happy with Flowers and from what I’ve seen he’s been stable and consistent. No one is going to confuse him with an all pro or even a pro bowler but he appears to better at guard then he ever was at tackle. I honestly can’t disagree with PFF assessment having not watched all of Flowers snaps but it isn’t improbable that he could be rated above Hernandez from what I have seen.
Who's to say he won't bounce back next year? I don't see the games, but from what BBI is leading me to believe, a new OL coach would make a big difference.
My point isn't that he's as good as last year, I'm saying he playing good enough LG to be the starter on a playoff team.
If he was the guy he was right now for the rest of his career, he would be an adequate starter.

1 WR

the rest on the roster need to improve greatly but I think we can do that with a few impact FAs. The guys drafted last year did not improve off of their rookie years. Hernandez has not been good, carter has been average at best, Hill did not improve, Barkley has taken a step back. The Rookies this year have been pretty impressive as a whole.
I like Jones a lot, he makes mistakes but he is a rookie. lawrence is a force, baker has improved but he hasn't been good yet, he is a disappointment at this point. Connelly hopefully comes back strong but may need a year. Slayton will be a very good player in this league once he attacks the ball more. Lets hope these guys take the leap unlike DGs 1st draft crop.
