Game Review: Green Bay Packers 31 – New York Giants 13 - ( New Window )
Thanks Sy

If you could pick a relatively unknown for HC who would you pick?
Sy, why do you think bettcher does not put his players,
George from PA : 12/3/2019 9:49 am : link
In best position to succeed?

Haley can only cover a certain type of wr.....#1 WRs just abuse him....same for Ballentine.

Bethea should not be on the field....he looks like he is playing sand....way to slow to react.

Do you think Baker, Beal, Ballentine has a future in the NFL? Love and Peppers might solve our safety position....but the Bs must improve
Sy' thanks for enduring

these.
It is totally startling the difference between Love and Bethea. Bethea continues to get beat unlike what a vet should be doing. Love, isn't perfect, but he is so much quicker and is about as sure a tackler as they have. I guess with Peppers out, they have to play Bethea, but I'd bench him for Love in a heartbeat.

We still have 4 more of these to watch?
Love what I'm reading about Love and Lawrence
Chris684 : 12/3/2019 9:54 am : link
I still think there is some hope for our defensive youth with a new staff if you consider Lawrence, Love, Connelly, Peppers building blocks and hope that Baker, Ballentine and Beal can figure it out. Very unfortunate that neither Hill or Carter appear to be stepping up.

Sy: What's your 30,000 view on Jones? Let's assume a new staff is in place. Is drafting Burrow/Tua on the table if you were advising them?
Same old things
Dave in PA : 12/3/2019 9:55 am : link
Nate Solder is in danger of “ruining” Daniel Jones’ internal clock. Wonderful. This iteration of Antoine Bethea is THE WORST starting safety I have ever seen. Just cut him already.
Sy having to continue to rewatch this trash, I envision

Read Sy's review, take stock in it, find a job for him in your front office.
Thank You Sy!

I honestly feel bad that you have to watch these games multiple times!

At any rate, I will take the positives from this:

1. DTs look decent! At least that was one area that DG was trying to fix that has yielded some positive results
2. Saquon taking a step forward. I'm hoping that continues and he builds up some mental resilience to start regaining his rookie year form
3. Julian Love getting a shot. Nice to see some solid play at safety!

I am still down on our coaching - we just don't see improvement across he board and our secondary looks like a 3 stooges skit. Between that and our OL, I can't wait for coaching to change and hopefully a set of better players.
Hats off to Sy.

I can barely watch this team live, much less on tape.
Interesting fact...
Dnew15 : 12/3/2019 10:28 am : link
The last three weeks the NYG are 4th against the run in avg. yards per game at 73.3. Before that they were 23rd allowing allowing 122.7 per game.

What do you think is the reason for such a dramatic turn around?

Great
AcidTest : 12/3/2019 10:31 am : link
review.

As Dnew15 implied, Williams is obviously helping the run defense. But there are so many problems that remain.
What do you think is the bigger problem...
Dnew15 : 12/3/2019 10:43 am : link
the Giant's DB's inability to cover OR the Giants inability to get after the passer?

Thank you for putting in the effort
ij_reilly : 12/3/2019 10:47 am : link
Excellent review, thank you for your effort here.

Plenty in that review that implicitly calls for Shurmur/Bettcher et al to be fired December 30.

Also plenty to bring DG into question as well. I could not comprehend the early endorsement of Halapio (and Pulley too) as starting-caliber C. They handed this guy the starting job. Mind boggling.

Also Bethea at safety is disastrous.

Could the Giants not have done better at both C and S in free agency?
I've given up on Carter.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 12/3/2019 11:18 am : link
Too many mental mistakes, plus an inability to consistently pass rush or physically hold the edge in run defense. He got absolutely destroyed at the LOS on a goalline play in which the Giants actually made a stop due to penetration by Williams.

I could actually stomach Bettcher leaving the rookies (or even Haley) on Adams if he made a concerted effort to double the receiver. No... it was just rooks and outmatched guys in complete solo coverage against one of the league's best receivers. It's inexplicable. Am I gonna get mad at Sam Beal when he predictably can't get the job done. Of course not.

Ogletree crapped the bed badly on a red zone TD pass when he left his zone area wide open to follow a receiver into an area Mayo was already in.

As a ND fan, the two things I know about Julian Love are he's tough and he can tackle. Let's hope this is something to build on.

LOL @ Sy's reaction to the Scott play
jcn56 : 12/3/2019 11:25 am : link
Literally the same thing that occurred to me (and probably everyone else) - NOW you want to try something different, with a guy that just got signed off the PS, in THIS weather?

I think there are a lot of talent problems with the roster, but I'm sure the coaching isn't any better.
On Love
JB_in_DC : 12/3/2019 11:26 am : link
I saw that he was getting snaps all over the field. Will be curious if they will continue this next year, or dedicate him to either FS or Slot. Curious in the modern NFL where nickel is basically the base which is considered more important. Hopefully he continues to flash.
Puzzled by OL
g-baby : 12/3/2019 11:38 am : link
Why not start Gates at RT (shit, i'd even try him at LT). The season is long lost. I thought Gates showed well enough in his lone start replacing Remmers. We know Remmers is not part of the future -- why not let Gates start these last few games to see if he can be a useful piece going forward?
$66 million dollars for Nate Solder

I agree with this 100%.
Also - how is it possible that the Giants can't find a young player that might be worth a damn somewhere that can even potentially play safety?
I give credit to JJ
Dnew15 : 12/3/2019 11:50 am : link
for playing hard on this team...but having said that...he's not a part of the future. Beal, Baker and Ballentine are the future - give them the reps.

I'd be 100% ok if suddenly appeared on the injury report with a pulled hammy.

Belichik's strategy is to prevent your best playmaker from getting the ball. Shumur would oblige him with his playcalling, with 4.3 40 Slayton and 4.4 40 20 BP Latimer sitting on the bench never running a sweep.

Not that we would run it effectively, while it seems to becoming a thing in the league with other teams.
I am amazed that there aren't more people criticizing Bethea weekly
Jay on the Island : 12/3/2019 12:08 pm : link
He is up there with CC Brown and Curtis Riley as the worst starting safeties the Giants have employed over the past 20 years. He is killing this team every single week yet Bettcher continues to play him.

I've been calling for Love to start over him all season long and now that Love is playing and playing well it is further evidence that Bettcher is just a terrible DC.

Thank You for your efforts and your professionalism, you are absolutely a must read every week no matter what happened on the field.

I know you had reservations about Jones, you felt he takes too long to make his reads, and this is what I am seeing also, I AM LITERALLY ON THE FENCE ABOUT THIS GUY, Sorry about the caps, too lazy to go back. His accuracy and arm strength are fine, if he could develop into a QB that was capable of making the reads quicker and able to deliver the ball to the right receiver at the right time, this kid could be a stud, but that is where I am not certain if he can improve enough to become a franchise QB that can lead you to the promised land. I wanted your take on him now that you have seen him for 10 games if you have the inclination.

Absolutely not on drafting a QB. Jones has shown me enough that he deserves a 2-3 year run with a more capable OL and Coach

I put more attention on yards per carry - and they have been middle of the pack for most of the year.

I can't see how they can possibly bring Shurmur backs
A couple of plays that stood out the flea flicker
and the Jet sweep with Cooper the fact he just came off
the practice squad how many times did they practice that
play . the Flea flicker we were not running effectively
enough to run it and lastly the FB comes off the bench
stone cold rarely ever runs the ball gets stuffed
the other thing on defense too many times every game
they are confused on where to line up and Rodgers
because he is still one of the best in the game
caught them with there pants around there ankles
12 men and an easy TD the press box noticed but Coaches
didnt call a TO The staff is the biggest problem then O-line
edge LB tackling machine . I like our young guys
especially Jones !

Being better against the run hasn't made the defense better anyway. What good is stopping the run when you absolutely cannot defend the pass or rush the quarterback.

We did this same song and dance to justify trading Damon Harrison.
Totally admire your thoroughness and balance.
CT Charlie : 12/3/2019 5:18 pm : link
As an armchair guy with limited knowledge, I must say I LIKE a tight end who's "a quality blocker with soft hands" and I couldn't care less about his speed. I want him to block who he's supposed to block, for as long as necessary, and when he slips off the line for a pass, I want him to catch it.

to Bethea's defense those guys were like 10 years younger than him. its not DG's fault Bettcher vouched for him over Tre Boston or someone younger/faster.
Tre Boston

They could have had him two years in a row. He signed for a little over $2 million this season and has been playing well for Carolina.

Over to you DG.

NYG defense yards per rush the last 3 weeks is 2.7 yrds per rush - good for 2nd in the NFL.

It's hard to argue against the fact that the Giants DL is very good against the rush since adding Williams. As much as we all love to kill DG - that is turning into a good move...as far as stopping the run is concerned.
