wrote the same thing in Monday's Post after Dev's loss. Where is PK Subban?
Subban has always been over rated. He was good offensively with a wicked slap shot. His defensive game was always bad. He got a Norris because they only go by goals and assists. Actually playing defense doesn't matter. Now that he's older and a little slower the offense is leaving him which makes him pretty useless.
Their forecheck was relentless, their neutral zone play great and they limited chances in their defensive zone and still the talent of a player like Barzal almost stole a point from them.

How the hell did that team lose 8 in a row?
1. Price has been brutal, Kinkaid worse (sayonara)
2. and they don't always have that effort. they are an effort team vs a talent team (like TBL). So they need max effort or they get easily outclassed by most teams. Brendan Gallagher is their best forward, Ben Chiarot played almost 31 min last night. That's not a good thing.
It was cool to see Toews and Peca play against each other. Two Quinnipiac alums in the NHL.
of blue line help I meant, but still probably better than what they have today.

Friedman says NYR and EDM discussed a deal centering around Lias Andersson and Jesse Puljujarvi, and that Puljujarvi was interested in heading to NY. No deal, though.
There's a new article in the Athletic that talks about Torts.
The main gist seems to be (from anonymous and identified sources) seems to be that he's can be a major asshole, but never ever crossed the line.
“I kind of like it when we get into those ‘fuck you’ matches. He looks at you a little differently after that. But he’s been my coach for, what, five seasons now? He’s been great to me.”- Cam Atkinson
at the serious levels these guys played at whose stories are coming out now.
but most of my life coaches yelled at, hit, threw things at, demeaned, embarrassed and belittled players.
just seemed like part of the game. not every coach, but a lot.
When my daughter began playing at 5 years old, her coach was 6' 4" Joe Hulbig - former 1st round pick of the Oilers, got hurt, but wound up playing for the Bruins and Providence for a while.
Awesome guy, the kids loved him, they had so much fun. My daughter would be in the car waiting for me to take her to practice. Three years of this - all of mites and maybe first year squirts.
I asked him one day, when are the kids going to start hating hockey like I did when I was that age and he smirked and said hopefully never. it's different now.
and he is 100% right or he should be.
but I do think coaches should have a right to be mean. physically or emotionally abusive no, definitely not racist, but mean - absolutely. everyone is motivated differently and coaches shouldn't be the players friends necessarily.

Thanks for sharing it. I'm planning to read it tonight.
Tough matchup for the kid, and I would have Price play tonight and Primeau vs the Rangers - especially after the beating Price took from the Rangers last week.
Ouch! Did he injure the player? Sure looked like it. Uncool
He is fortunate to "only" suffer a concussion. Leagues like the NHL and NFL when they say they care about player safety, need to highlight dangerous plays like this as an example of what is not acceptable. We'll see what the player safety dept has to say.
I also think it's sort of funny that George Parros (who I like) - notable on-ice goon, is discipline czar
Slowing it down and focusing only on that the slew foot is obvious. At game speed with other things going on I can understand how it is missed. How about that cross check by a Montreal player to the face of Cal Clutterbuck that was not called? Or Deryk Engelland's cross check to Matt Martin right in front of Wes McCauley, who is usually one of the best in the game?

I saw it real time and immediately thought slew foot, but my couch is definitely different than the on ice views of the refs. I wasn't so much commenting on the real time call anyway, but the post-game defense by those defending it.
The Islanders vs Habs a lot was let go - both ways. I do think it's weak they called Carey Price for the slash, when he was retaliating on Nelson. Normally goalies get the benefit of the doubt. If the goalie does something you can usually be sure (usually) it wasn't initiated by the goalie or the player did something to deserve it and you let both go, you don't usually see a goalie get a retaliation call.
There have been some Taylor Hall rumors to Colorado. One of the rumors I saw was him for Bowen Byram and a 1st. Is that a realistic return if it happened soon? That seems a bit generous for the Devils as I would be happy with Byram straight up for Hall with perhaps a condition(2nd or 3rd) in the event that they re-sign Hall.
but the consensus I've read is the going rate for a player like Hall is a 1st round pick, a 4th round pick and a B prospect.
because he's a rental.
if he were signed beyond this year maybe upgrade the prospect I guess.
Byram is an A prospect. He was the #4 pick in the draft less than 18 months ago. I wouldn't be floored if they got that, but I do think it's a little bit of an overpay. but Hall isn't a typical rental, I guess you could argue.
but like I said, predicting trade value is not my forte.
Brett and I have talked on here before about the book Losing the Edge, about the 1994 Rangers and the aftermath of the Cup season, and there is a whole lot in there illustrating how much of a maniac Keenan was, particularly towards Mike Gartner and Eddie Olczyk.
Man the Devils goaltending has been pretty awful Â
Blackwood has been playing very well at times but Schneider and now Domingue are just brutal. They need to make goaltender a priority either via trades before the deadline or in FA.
Blackwood still could be a very good starter but they need a better option to split time with him.
the Atlantic is. Bruins running away with the league.
TBL and TOR massively underachieving.
MTL doing what was expected for the most part, aside from Price playing like a sieve.
BUF and FLA possibly exceeding the low expectations people have for them.
DET and OTT about right.
I do expect both TBL and TOR to go on a roll, but who knows at this point. It's no longer a SSS. Though last year probably taught us not to write anyone off in December (or January).

not even close. I read when he was coming back he'd be a good PP guy. You don't (IMO) pay a PP guy $6+M per year.
I don't know how stuff like this impacts the cap, but I believe his full $6.2M cap hit counts next year (and the remainder of this year counts this year).
19 goals/43 points, for almost $19 million dollars.
RE: Regarding the earlier discussions about abusive coaches Â
Brett and I have talked on here before about the book Losing the Edge, about the 1994 Rangers and the aftermath of the Cup season, and there is a whole lot in there illustrating how much of a maniac Keenan was, particularly towards Mike Gartner and Eddie Olczyk.
it's a fine line between strict (which I take your meaning) and abusive, especially at the young ages.
I was a youth hockey ref in Madison for a number of years. Most of the abuse was coming from the stands (parents, I assume).
The day I had to retrieve the puck from the net and realized the young goalie was bawling his eyes out behind his mask is the day I switched full-time to soccer.
are the WORST. at least in my experience in youth sports as a player, spectator, parent, and now coach.
Not sure if it's the speed, hitting, or something else, but I have been involved with so many sports in all the roles mentioned and in my experience hockey parents are by far the worst.
That said, our goalie cries when she lets in softies. and sometimes she get emotional when she lets in good goals. I try and coach her to be emotionless but every kid is different, so anyway Jay I agree with you it's rough to see kids like that, but sometimes it's the kid and not the environment (parents, coaches, teammates, etc.).
Our kids were so sensitive to it they'd go and huddle around the goalie after any goal to cheer her up. maybe a girl athlete thing - I was definitely not prepared for it and out team is great - very competitive, we win a lot, almost every tournament we're in we make the finals or win.
I had to tell the kids before one of our games stop acting like you're at a funeral when we give up a goal. the other team scores, you go and line up for the face off and move on.
If I were on the other team and I saw how much the goalie reacted from allowing a goal I'd use it to my advantage. Maybe not at 7 or 8 years old, but at 12/13 and older, definitely.

pjcas18 -- what do you make of Caufield's season at UW. I am surprised that the team as a whole hasn't done better.
Caufield has been incredible from the limited action I've seen. Better than a PPG pace as a true freshman. I believe he leads all of NCAA freshman in point.
WI has such a young team. Holloway hasn't even been drafted yet, Turcotte and Caufield are freshman - those are three of the team leaders.
They have so much talent, but I feel like a lot of that talent will leave. Pretty sure Caufield will join the Habs this year in March. Turcotte probably leaves if not this year, then next. Miller is probably gone this spring or next fall.
Great experience for these kids with Granato, but they're so young, it's hard to compete in NCAA against older players.
