NFT: Hockey Thread - Devils fire Hynes - WJC Rosters Coming out

pjcas18 : 12/3/2019 4:22 pm
as the thread title says, Devils fire Hynes.

And WJC rosters staring to come out. I'll post them as I see them.

Some will have mini-camp tryout (like Canada).

what they did to PK Subban.

How is he this bad?

Hall, Hischier, Hughes, Subban, Butcher, etc. they should not be this bad as a team.

I wasn't sold on the goaltending, but I haven't watched enough to see if that's the problem or not (like it is in MTL).

Unusual # of draft eligibles

Canada highlights for 2020 draft
Lafreniere
Byfield
Perfetti
Holloway (from WIS)
Jamie Drysdale
Dawson Mercer
plus more

and some already drafted players
like Byram (COL), Cozens (BUF), Krebs (LVG), Smith (NJD) and more

this is not final - there are 31 players invited to camp, I think they go with 20 or 22.

Subban has always been over rated. He was good offensively with a wicked slap shot. His defensive game was always bad. He got a Norris because they only go by goals and assists. Actually playing defense doesn't matter. Now that he's older and a little slower the offense is leaving him which makes him pretty useless.
Not sure Subban's
pjcas18 : 12/4/2019 1:03 pm : link
defense was bad - analytics definitely don't support that from what I remember, but clearly it was never his calling card.

But his offense shouldn't be this bad at this age.

He's 30, not 40.

had their best game in a month or so.

Their forecheck was relentless, their neutral zone play great and they limited chances in their defensive zone and still the talent of a player like Barzal almost stole a point from them.

they need help on the blue line. desperately.

They kicked the shit out of the Islanders last night. Just dominated almost the entire game. Worst game I've seen from NYI all year.

How the hell did that team lose 8 in a row?

1. Price has been brutal, Kinkaid worse (sayonara)

2. and they don't always have that effort. they are an effort team vs a talent team (like TBL). So they need max effort or they get easily outclassed by most teams. Brendan Gallagher is their best forward, Ben Chiarot played almost 31 min last night. That's not a good thing.

It was cool to see Toews and Peca play against each other. Two Quinnipiac alums in the NHL.

not exactly the type

Regarding abusive coaches
Davisian : 12/4/2019 3:24 pm : link
There's a new article in the Athletic that talks about Torts.

The main gist seems to be (from anonymous and identified sources) seems to be that he's can be a major asshole, but never ever crossed the line.

“I kind of like it when we get into those ‘fuck you’ matches. He looks at you a little differently after that. But he’s been my coach for, what, five seasons now? He’s been great to me.”- Cam Atkinson

I never played hockey
pjcas18 : 12/4/2019 3:43 pm : link
at the serious levels these guys played at whose stories are coming out now.

but most of my life coaches yelled at, hit, threw things at, demeaned, embarrassed and belittled players.

just seemed like part of the game. not every coach, but a lot.

When my daughter began playing at 5 years old, her coach was 6' 4" Joe Hulbig - former 1st round pick of the Oilers, got hurt, but wound up playing for the Bruins and Providence for a while.

Awesome guy, the kids loved him, they had so much fun. My daughter would be in the car waiting for me to take her to practice. Three years of this - all of mites and maybe first year squirts.

I asked him one day, when are the kids going to start hating hockey like I did when I was that age and he smirked and said hopefully never. it's different now.

and he is 100% right or he should be.

but I do think coaches should have a right to be mean. physically or emotionally abusive no, definitely not racist, but mean - absolutely. everyone is motivated differently and coaches shouldn't be the players friends necessarily.

Herb Brooks taught us that, if no one else did.

And that Torts article points to the line between being a red ass and being abusive.

He is fortunate to "only" suffer a concussion. Leagues like the NHL and NFL when they say they care about player safety, need to highlight dangerous plays like this as an example of what is not acceptable. We'll see what the player safety dept has to say.

I also think it's sort of funny that George Parros (who I like) - notable on-ice goon, is discipline czar

Slowing it down and focusing only on that the slew foot is obvious. At game speed with other things going on I can understand how it is missed. How about that cross check by a Montreal player to the face of Cal Clutterbuck that was not called? Or Deryk Engelland's cross check to Matt Martin right in front of Wes McCauley, who is usually one of the best in the game?

I saw it real time and immediately thought slew foot, but my couch is definitely different than the on ice views of the refs. I wasn't so much commenting on the real time call anyway, but the post-game defense by those defending it.

The Islanders vs Habs a lot was let go - both ways. I do think it's weak they called Carey Price for the slash, when he was retaliating on Nelson. Normally goalies get the benefit of the doubt. If the goalie does something you can usually be sure (usually) it wasn't initiated by the goalie or the player did something to deserve it and you let both go, you don't usually see a goalie get a retaliation call.
And now it's official
pjcas18 : 12/6/2019 10:02 am : link
no discipline for Zadorov (the guy who committed the slew foot on Kotkaniemi). No fine, no suspension, no hearing.

That was my point, not a real time call in a game.

There have been some Taylor Hall rumors to Colorado. One of the rumors I saw was him for Bowen Byram and a 1st. Is that a realistic return if it happened soon? That seems a bit generous for the Devils as I would be happy with Byram straight up for Hall with perhaps a condition(2nd or 3rd) in the event that they re-sign Hall.
I'm not great at projecting
pjcas18 : 12/7/2019 2:41 pm : link
trade values.

but the consensus I've read is the going rate for a player like Hall is a 1st round pick, a 4th round pick and a B prospect.

because he's a rental.

if he were signed beyond this year maybe upgrade the prospect I guess.

Byram is an A prospect. He was the #4 pick in the draft less than 18 months ago. I wouldn't be floored if they got that, but I do think it's a little bit of an overpay. but Hall isn't a typical rental, I guess you could argue.

but like I said, predicting trade value is not my forte.

Greg from LI : 12/7/2019 9:28 pm : link
Brett and I have talked on here before about the book Losing the Edge, about the 1994 Rangers and the aftermath of the Cup season, and there is a whole lot in there illustrating how much of a maniac Keenan was, particularly towards Mike Gartner and Eddie Olczyk.
Man the Devils goaltending has been pretty awful
Jay on the Island : 12/8/2019 2:28 pm : link
Blackwood has been playing very well at times but Schneider and now Domingue are just brutal. They need to make goaltender a priority either via trades before the deadline or in FA.

Blackwood still could be a very good starter but they need a better option to split time with him.

the Atlantic is. Bruins running away with the league.

TBL and TOR massively underachieving.

MTL doing what was expected for the most part, aside from Price playing like a sieve.

BUF and FLA possibly exceeding the low expectations people have for them.

DET and OTT about right.

I do expect both TBL and TOR to go on a roll, but who knows at this point. It's no longer a SSS. Though last year probably taught us not to write anyone off in December (or January).
Big for USA
pjcas18 : 12/9/2019 5:20 pm : link
Islanders loaning Wahlstrom to the US for WJC.

not sure it's big enough to move the needle on their expectations, but he's easily their best player with Hughes not being loaned too.

Has there ever been a time in NHL history with a deeper group of star players under the age of 25? It is exceptionally deep, and rife with quality. Five of the top 7 scorers, 9 of the top 16...all under 25. The game is getting younger and younger.
