Francesa: Giants problems run DEEP

Chef : 12/3/2019 8:15 pm
This was posted in a thread but got lost I think.. This is what many BBI'ers have been saying regarding the Front Office. He touches on the Ron Rivera firing and what the Carolina FO is going to do moving forward. Hiring people outside to run Football Operations. Worth a listen.
Giants Problems run DEEP - ( New Window )
I usually do not agree with Mike...

but he is spot on this time. Especially when he spoke about destroying the loyal fan base. When he talks about how the new stadium and PSLs also created a change in the fan base. All 100% correct.

It seems every decision from the top has been the wrong move...
The stadium and its design
The PSLs and basically taking money from two fan bases for one stadium
The coaching decisions
The GM decisions
etc

This is spot on. They have badly mismanaged their business at the highest levels. There are good reasons for each of those decisions but they were still mistakes. One mistake after another, corroding the fan base, corroding the team, turning a Tiffany franchise into just another sports shitshow.

I've been clamoring for someone from Jints Central to speak. And have been told that it's basically silly and worthless.

Well, at least Tisch had the balls to speak, and provided some very interesting insight. Looks like he's a bit tired of taking a back seat to this godforsaken product on the field...
Let me add more about how they ruined their own fan base...
EricJ : 12/3/2019 9:25 pm : link
So bear with me while I set this up...

My father had season tickets from 1948
I started going to the games in the early 70s
Had prime seats in Giants stadium and rarely missed a game
My father transferred the seats to me (1999) three years before he passed on
I paid a hefty PSL to continue the tradition at the new stadium
Over the past 3 seasons, I have put the tickets for every game up for sale
I have been to a total of 3 games in the past three seasons.
I no longer want to waste an entire Sunday on such a poor product
I have no idea who buys my tickets and I dont care
Once the team is competitive, I am selling my PSLs... it's over

** side note, the old stadium brought the fans closer to the field action. My seats were right behind the visitor bench. We could get in the opposing teams' heads with heated conversations all game long. Now, we are pushed so far back from the field with the new design, it takes that element away. The stadium sucks in so many ways.

That sucks. It's all about the $. Mara & Tisch aren't alone in that. Every sports franchise seems to be going that way, pushing out the diehards so they can make some more coin. A damn shame.

It is very short sighted. They basically have the tickets pre-sold because the PSLs force you to buy the season each year.

So, the people with the expensive PSLs are not going to abandon them. However, I would guess that half of the seats come with a PSL that was $1000 or less. Those people could easily walk away from them. Then, you will have thousands of unsold tickets.

The Giants would be forced to sell them at a discount 24 hours before game time. Then, the supply and demand for the product has been turned on its head.

I think we are going to see empty seats for years

I am not sure what good it will do at this point.

My father used to write to Wellington Mara and George Young once or twice each year. They both would write hand written letters back. I enjoyed reading them and we felt a bit of a connection due to that personal touch.

I cant help but think if a letter was written today, we would get a response from a PR intern with Mara's signature.
I cannot imagine paying for season tickets let alone the PSL
Rjanyg : 12/3/2019 9:57 pm : link
I took my wife and son to the Jets game. I had to pay almost $700 for 3 tickets and parking pass for sen one level end zone seats.

The Giants played like shit, especially the defense. Barkley had 1 yard rushing. Talk about the worst game to attend. Having to pay all that money for such a shitty product is criminal.

I agree that Giants Stadium was much better than Met Life.
Hard to believe...

But why freeze your ass off for the product we're trotting out there? Personally, I hope we end up at The Dublin House with one eye on the Giants & the other on a better game. Have been a fan since 1958. As a young boy lived and died about every Giant game. One of my fondest memories of going to the original Yankee Stadium, after serving mass, was sitting in the bleachers and witnessing Y.A. Tittle throwing seven touchdown passes.

Now I'm season ticket holder who got shoved up into nosebleed seats because that's all I could afford while sitting in that lifeless stadium with a bunch of my fellow seniors with similar stories. What galls me is that poser fans who get their corporate primo seats and spend more time texting the getting into the game. As Francesa alluded to, this whole PSL debacle was all about how much money they can gouge from the loyal fan base.

Money made the owners even richer with total disregard for keeping the N. Y. Giants a strong and proud franchise. They should be ashamed of themselves. For so many decades anticipating the next Giant game was a joy for me. Now we are a joke of a team and I feel as fans we have to hit them in the pocketbook. Maybe refrain from going to games and if you go don't spend money on merchandise. We have to send a stern message that as Giant fans we will not watch a garbage product. This degradation of our team is both infuriating and sad. My rant is over and I hope we can see the rise of our beloved Giants again.

in at least 15-20 years.
On the issue of the fan base. I don't think the younger fans, even the 20 somethings understand how hard it was to get tickets to A Giants game in the 70's/80's/90's prior to the days of the secondary market. In the 70's and 80's it was like gold unless you were a season ticket holder. I'm as die hard a fan as there is and started watching in '77 and between then and the early 2000's I maybe was able to go to 15 games or so when a friend took me or gave up tickets.

I now take my kids to one game a year. This year was the worst. The bottom of the barrel- the Buffalo game. Mind you I had a headache from the moment I woke up, but it just wasn't the same. We tailgaited but my heart wasn't in it. Sat in the blazing heat all day with buffalo fans all over the place serenading us. Last year it was New Orleans fans Who Datting us all over the place. As we were leaving the game I turned to the kids and said until something improves I just can't do it any more. $400 for 3 300 level seats and parking. We could have gone to a Yanks playoff game or 2 for that. Who needs to pay for this shit product and to have opposing fans no matter who the hell we're playing come in and have a blast taking over the stadium. At least if we were putting a competitive product on the field we could give those fans shit.
We all staired in dis-belief what Snyder did to the Redskins fan base after decades of being the toughest ticket in town in Washington or maybe even the league. Well congrats folks, Mara has pulled that off here.

PSLs
mattnyg05 : 12/4/2019 6:08 am : link
Were a rotten idea with 2 teams in the stadium. But I think the real killer was the internet-anyone can get a ticket. The PSLs are essentially worthless because you can buy a ticket to any game in virtually any location for probably less than market price with no psl needed.

I have been pushing my family to sell ours as soon as the team is good enough and then simply buy tickets to games each year using that money. Youd be in the green for a long time that way. Anyone can get a ticket anytime now-its not like it was where having a ticket was basically like striking gold.

I am doing the same thing once the team improves a bit. I am in a very unique situation where I can still sell my seats for a profit even when the team is this shitty. I actually get more than face value for pre-season games too. All based upon the seat location.

So, I am going to connect with some ticket brokers who likely would buy the PSLs so they can generate a revenue stream.

I got on the Giants season ticket waiting list in 1978
Mendenhall : 12/4/2019 9:39 am : link
And finally got off the list two years prior to the old stadium closing. 2 tickets, 3 rows from the top and in the corner. So ecstatic we had a party the day I was notified. Despite the location, we had a great view surrounded by long time die hards. Went to every game.

Bought the PSL for the new stadium I think it was $1000 a seat. Went the first season and sold my PSL at a break even the next year. The view from the upper deck made it impossible to enjoy the game. Looked like ants on the field. You know who that stadium was built for and it wasn't the die hard. The stadium itself was bland and antiseptic.

Now I go to an away game each year. This year went to Detroit last year Dallas. I encourage anyone who hasn't gone to Dallas to go. The stadium is worth the experience and when you consider Mara paid more to build his stadium than Jerry did, you realize how incompetent the two rich kids are.

You are right. We used to get little parting gifts leaving and I always looked forward to the calendar. Quality control went down towards the last few they gave out (I think they repeated a month once, and another time had the same date of like May 17th show up a few times) . But I looked forward to that thing and had it up in my office every year.

As for the PSLs and fans taking over. This is the NFL now and has been for a while. The days of waiting list Giants fans are long gone. I've said on here for a long time, I used to sit next to the same group of guys game in/game out for years in the old Stadium. We all knew each other, saw our kids grow up, etc. Now, there is someone new sitting next to me each game. I've already ranted about the fans not knowing not to stand up in the middle of a friggin play to go to the bathroom or whatever, so I won't bother getting into that again.

But it's all about winning. With the secondary market, it's much easier to sell your tickets and get money back. Remember this in 2014? It was the Cowboys home opener vs. the Niners.

And later this was their game at home vs. the Houston Texans

This is how sports is now and has been the past 10+ years across the league. Back in the 1980s the Redskins had that sellout streak that they tried to pretend kept on going, until this started happening and even Daniel Snyder can't keep up the bullshit.

What Francesa is saying isn't wrong. But I have video of him lauding the Giants as being better owners in 2012 after the Tebow trade to the Jets because at the time he was at war with the Jets for how they treated "Mr. T", his buddy. PSLs were going on then.

Right now the Giants are losing and are losers and an easy target.
The Giants mistake was attempting to repair a team with Eli at qb
GeofromNJ : 12/4/2019 12:09 pm : link
thinking they could make another run instead of dumping Eli five years ago and rebuilding. So now they have a quarterback who is better than Eli (although I would have preferred they draft Josh Allen instead of Barkley and take Nick Chubb in the 2nd round). We'll just have to wait for the O line and defense to improve. Is DG the guy to do this? I have serious doubts although Scott Pioli is high on DG based on his comments when interviewed by Maggie and Bart on 12/3.

Jerry's ego also chased off Jimmy Johnson and squandered a dynasty. And then went through his own wilderness until he was desperate for Parcells to right the ship ahead of the new stadium.

But yeah, I'd imagine those who don't like Chris Mara anywhere in the FO would totally love having an owner who has proudly owned the GM title despite just a few wins in the postseason in the past 2 decades.

That should have been a warning sign - that was the first (and only) playoff game at MetLife. I was there that day with my son, just found the playoff towel from the game the other day. We got tickets off Ticketmaster on a presale for barely above face. For a playoff game!

Sports have become outrageously expensive. In the span of 10 years, the price I used to pay to go to games basically doubled, and they weren't exactly bargains in the first place. Teams from all sports have basically monetized their fans - to the point where bullshit like PSLs exist to squeeze every last ounce of cash out of them, and make the game more accessible to higher wealth fans while pushing the rank and file far enough from the field that it literally becomes hard to see the action.

When you consider how much better TV broadcasts have become, that big screen TVs can be had for what a family of 4 would pay to go to a single game, and how constrained the tailgating experience has become - combined with the nickel and diming - why the hell should any fan have any loyalty at all? It's all business - would you tolerate a shit product from any other business just because you had been a consumer of that brand in the past.

And what little team loyalty there is left, I'm pretty sure fantasy sports and gambling (DFS) will bring an end to it. People will care less about teams and more about individual performances.

This isn't really Giants related, but I thought a HUGE but underreported story was the concept of the Tampa Rays playing half their season in Montreal.

I doubt I'm alive long enough to witness it, but I think in the future teams won't even belong to cities anymore. It'll just be a traveling road show. And then teams won't be affiliated with cities, but corporations.

The Verizon Giants against the Amazon Cowboys, from LA.

Who gets the credit for the Yankees being an enormously valuable franchise? Dan Snyder probably had a better business acumen than Jerry Jones, how well has he run his organization?

I don't see how either factor relates all that much to football acumen or running a franchise well. Yes, Mara has had problems making hires. No question there. And Jerry Jones hired Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, and everyone's top choice for our next coach Jason Garrett. Snyder's awful track record is well known.

No owner gets that job because of their football acumen or any sort of specifically relevant qualifications. Some are certainly better than others but none of them are perfect. The biggest issues are usually ego maniacs like Dolan or cheapness or both like the Wilpons so at least Mara isn't either of those things.

I have a feeling some of this disruptive change is going to be quicker than you might think. A large part of it is going to come along as the baby boomers start dropping off, since the wealth disparity between the boomers, Gen X and Gen Y is strong, and then falls off a cliff when you get to the millennials.

Now I go to an away game each year. This year went to Detroit last year Dallas. I encourage anyone who hasn't gone to Dallas to go. The stadium is worth the experience and when you consider Mara paid more to build his stadium than Jerry did, you realize how incompetent the two rich kids are.

You don't want to overstate how much effect the venue has on a team, its fans, and overall "energy", but it also should not be discounted.

Metlife was botched, period. It's an insipid, Pyongyang'ing bore in arguably the worst part of the United States of America. Nothing about it inspires or creates energy.

Yes, we understand that building in NYC comes with prodigious challenges. The West Side stadium would have been gorgeous but a traffic nightmare (with minimal tailgating possibilities). Who knows what could have been in Queens...

But 1.6 billion. ONE POINT SIX BILLION. The world class city, no doubt filled with the Earth's best architects, a once in a ~30 year chance to get it right. And that's what they came up with. It's pathetic.

I wish Mara was Steve Ballmer loaded and, as part of moving on from this dreadful period in Giants history, just said "fuck this, Jets can have Metlife, we're moving to one of the outer boroughs and building it right this time."

Maybe it doesn't affect the team's energy & aura one bit, but it for sure does not add to it. And, as a fan who loves screaming his face off at games, I can tell you I'd be a whole lot more pumped doing so here:
