Rivera’s coordinators

cosmicj : 12/4/2019 7:55 am
Rivera doesn’t have a full blown OL coach, although there is an assistant. He has John Matsko as a Running Game Coordinator. I’ve linked to Matsko’s bio. He looks like a bona fide expert, with a long track record of working with high echelon OLs. If Rivera is hired by the Giants, Matsko will hopefully be part of the package.

Rivera’s DC is a guy named Eric Washington, who I wasn’t familiar with, promoted to that position two seasons ago.

I think it’s interesting that both coordinators, one of them being Norv Turner of course, were not named interim HCs, with Fewell getting the nod. That’s curious and suggests both of them were given notice as well.

Finally, Rivera’s special teams coordinator is none other than Chase Blackburn.

Rivera has worked with many of these guys for several years. In fact, the coaching staff seems to have been very stable. A Rivera hire would presumably be something of a package deal, with Turner and Matsko coming with him. The DC Eric Washington is a wild card. Not sure whether he has successfully established himself.

I’m not commenting whether that is god or bad, but trying to read the tea leaves.

Why are
LawrenceTaylor56 : 12/4/2019 8:03 am : link
we so excited to bring a coaching staff that just got fired?

Are we expecting different results with a worse roster?
Why are we talking about these guys

Like they’re Parcells and Belichick? Rivera just got canned by an owner who wants to get serious about his football team. I understand Mara probably already has Rivera’s name at the top of that shitty list in his drawer but the rest of us don’t have to buy in so easily.

jeff57 : 12/4/2019 8:09 am : link
Was his DC in 2017. Currently the Browns' DC, where Kitchens is likely to get canned.
He did a good job utilizing McCarthy, he would be perfect coach for Ba

Dont forget his starting QB is injured which is huge reason Panthers aren't in the playoffs. He was in a Superbowl not to long ago with Gentlemen
Maybe FMiC can confirm,
Jon in NYC : 12/4/2019 8:27 am : link
but I think Panthers fans loathe Eric Washington.

Literally nobody is doing that.

And you dont have to buy in, but your reason for not doing do isnt a very educated one so.. I wont get in the way if you wanna stomp your feet
If a defensive coach is the HC
jvm52106 : 12/4/2019 8:43 am : link
then your interim probably needs to be defensive as well. No need to change that up when this is nothing but you have the com for 4 games left.

Anyone will do better next year with the $ they have to put into the roster. Including Shurmer.
Can anyone who doesnt like Rivera provide some
Brown Recluse : 12/4/2019 9:18 am : link
legitimate reasons why a 2x AP coach of the year, multiple winning seasons, playoff appearances including a super bowl, SHOULDNT be considered as a candidate? Other than some lame shit like he got fired and he worked with Gettleman?
If any member of BBI

Believe's that Rivera is not a megaton upgrade at coach over what we have, just follow a different sport and move on.

Mainly because he's not some shiny new toy that hasn't been unboxed yet.
The Skins should be all over Riviera
FranknWeezer : 12/4/2019 9:45 am : link
They should interview him yesterday and give him roster control.
I like Rhule a lot as a potential HC option
Jay on the Island : 12/4/2019 9:51 am : link
but my concern with him is his staff. Will he be able to lure experienced assistants to NY. I don't want to see a staff filled with assistants that have little NFL experience.

I like Rivera as an option because he's had some excellent assistants in his time as HC. If he was hired by the Giants and brought Turner a long it would be a huge win especially for Barkley and Jones.
I am not opposed to Rivera
Mike from Ohio : 12/4/2019 9:58 am : link
but this condescending nonsense of people don't love him just because of his link to Gettleman is ridiculous. There is a reason the guy just got fired.

Rivera did a nice job building the team up from when he took over. They got better each of his first three years. But then look at the performance afterward. Winning season, losing season, winning season, losing season. There is an inconsistency there that deserves some consideration. Rivera has been compared by many to Coughlin and that is pretty fair. Coughlin was also let go because the team he coached was often wildly inconsistent.

I am not dismissing that he is a good coach, and yes he had several good years. He deserves consideration. But the inconsistency from year to year is a valid question in my mind that has nothing to do with Gettleman.
Oh and probably the most significant reason not to hire Rivera
Mike from Ohio : 12/4/2019 10:01 am : link
Listening to him being called "Riverboat Ron" every fucking week.
I think he is a solid coach
Rudy5757 : 12/4/2019 10:16 am : link
It would be an upgrade over what we have now. I believe he was stuck with Cam Newton for better or worse. When things are great Cam is one of the best, when they are not he is one of the worst. Managing that process has to be a nightmare. They also drafted some great talent during his time. so not sure what level of input he had in that process.
The most important hire
Lines of Scrimmage : 12/4/2019 10:46 am : link
next to the HC is the OL coach for the Giants. We need someone who is not only a great coach but who can identify talent.

There is always an expectation that some how a losing coach has a magic wand that he will waive and the new team will be a SB contender. The guy lost with a better roster, how could he become a winner here?
I would love to

See an old school tough guy like Rivera leading this team.

Even better if he can convince Jack Del Rio to come be the DC and then they can hire some young gun OC to open things up and make it a bit more modern.

this!
The skill set the Giants require MOST
David B. : 12/4/2019 10:57 am : link
At the moment is TEAM-BUILDING. Turning a bunch of young, inexperienced talent into professionals and into a good team. A cursory look at what Rivera did in Caro seems to indicate he has that skill.

Winning with a well-built team is actually a different skill set. I don't know if that's Rivera or not. He's been fired because he didn't do that enough, or soon enough, or whatever.

The best HCs do BOTH. But if you could bring in Lombardi, Parcells, Bellichik, or Walsh right now, they wouldn't WIN immediately with this team. But they'd get them going in the right direction.

I've been calling for Bill Callahan since it was obvious that Jay Gruden was going to be fired. Callahan is among the best OL coaches in the NFL and he will be available this offseason. The Giants should do whatever it takes to land him.

Jeff Davidson (if Patricia is fired) and Marc Colombo are two other solid options.
Call me pie in the sky
mittenedman : 12/4/2019 1:20 pm : link
but I'm hoping for

Matt Rhule (Head Coach)
Ron Rivera (Defensive Coordinator)

I realize he is likely to get another HC Job but if he doesn't I would back up the BRINKS truck for him as a DC.

Exactly!!! I guess only a fanbase of a team that has been awful for a decade could be this desperate for a little taste of mediocrity.
Riverboat Ron
Tim in Eternal Blue : 12/4/2019 6:06 pm : link
Would be an excellent replacement.

When you are looking for a new HC you either try and hire a hotshot coordinator (which is a crap shoot) or you hire a retread.

Rivera looks about as close to a Coughlin retread as you can get.. Experience and performance wise.

He's infinitely better than PS. That's not even a debate.
