some draft history

dlauster : 12/5/2019 10:14 am
I know that hindsight is 20/20, but I looked up and found an interesting (possible) correlation between the Giants demise over the past decade and their draft priorities over the years.

The Giants have not drafted a linebacker in the first two rounds of the draft since 2009....

In my opinion this has always been the most important position on the defense...certainly the most cerebral.

This may be my Taylor and Banks bias here but to imagine this team not emphasizing linebackers for a decade is all you need to see to identify a huge hole in their development strategy.

I'm not saying anything new to many on this board, but sheesh!
And to top this by hiring a defensive coach who runs a 3-4? Who thought this was a good idea?
totally agree

playing 3-4 defense with bad LBs makes no sense which is what we have been doing the last 2 years. go to a 4-3 or a 4-2-5 which is where the NFL is heading. If you have Banks and Taylor play a 3-4 but we don't
Fuck the 2-4-5 is all I'm saying

And my 5-0-6 is really a 3-2-6 anyway if you have the right 2 for that

Or a 5-....etc .
Well, Connelly wasn't drafted in the first two rounds, but he should

be a keeper. I'd like to see them add someone early - maybe Isaiah Simmons who can cover and tackle. Our defensive backs need help in the middle of the field and Simmons could be that guy.
Backers

When your completely rebuilding a roster like we are starting last year and need virtually every position, linebacker is initially lower in priority unless LT is sitting there. You get a QB while you are at the top of the draft, start to rebuild the trenches and get a CB. Quite a few of those priorities have now been met and you will see some linebackers added both this year and next in my opinion. Team has a lot of cap space.
And which LB did we pass on
Pepe LePugh : 12/5/2019 11:06 am : link
That would have gotten us to a SB?
I kind of like that

3-3-5 that Matt Rhule uses at Baylor
All one needs to do is

look at the first round picks the Giants have made since 2011. It will turn your stomach on how little attention was given to the defense. Starting with two picks for RB’s in the first round which should never be done. Lots of glitz and no substance is the conclusion.
Due to.my own idiocy

I've chosen to look at this for a long time. I don't waste my time doing draft anymore, but the long-term trends are very clear.

I spent ten years or so idiotically ranting about Jerry Reese's biases, which I won't go over now, that parts over. Forgive and forget.

But which biases became clear to most of you guys eventually.

Now:

IRAs right about "defending the middle of the field", but one player (Simmons maybe) won't be enough.

You also need the very unusual (for us, even more so) true free safety.

So that brings up resisting the fancy new toys:

At this point, I'd be very reluctant to draft ANY offensive talent player until the coach or a new coach shows us a rational approach and direction .

We can get through one year with this crew on offense, knowing that our version of the wco is dead, and allowing a coach some grace . The seduction of 'wrs and offense talent' is just very strong come draft day.

Give it one year without that.

Yes.

You do need the fast S/LB who can reliably pass defend and disrupt and intimidate would be catchers and chase

But you also need a burner free safety who takes great angles and can break in the ball from 20 yards. Give QBs pause.

That's probably 1,2 pick wise, or 2,1.

If they draft another QB we can laugh and wear paper bags on our heads for. Year.
Modern Great Defenses Require...
x meadowlander : 12/5/2019 11:52 am : link
1 very good run stuffing DT
At LEAST 2 excellent edge rushers
2 excellent playmakers at Safety/Middle Linebacker
1 shutdown corner and 2 solid corners

The Giants are actually close, if Connely gets healthy, Bethea is replaced and a couple of excellent edge rushers magically appear.

No they’re not, like Carl Banks says “They’re a few players away...from being a few players away!”

We still need a good edge rusher and better OL.
OP - I am not a student of the game but, in a 4-3 defense
short lease : 12/10/2019 7:15 pm : link

how is LB a priority? Maybe MLB but the DL is of upmost important and we drafted A LOT of talent for the DL leading up to the 2007 SB win.

And, after that we traded for Chris Canty and drafted JPP which helped win the 2011 season.

We just went to a 3-4 recently.
