Fire Shurmur, get ahead of the curve on Rivera

BillyM : 12/6/2019 11:18 am
A 2x coach of the year, a Super Bowl coach with the respect that Ron R. has is going to command a strong market. More than a few teams will be interested.

At current, we have some selling points. Young, smart rookie QB. Cap flexibility with plenty to spend. A top 3 pick on the horizon. We also have some warts. Plenty of them.

Do you jump teams like Dallas and fire Shurmur in the next week, if you can get an agreement in pencil with Ron R?

I say yes. There is no tampering here as Coach is a free agent.

I think he's the guy, and I have to believe ownership and Getty know he's the guy. If so, why not start the process now?
Why would Rivera agree to that?

Even if you think he's a no-brainer for the Giants (which I don't) how would it make sense for Rivera to take this job before considering other possibilities?

This isn't a dream job. That's one of the reasons we ended up with Shurmur in the first place.

Rivera said he's going to take the next four weeks off.

There is zero doubt in my mind Gettleman has touched base with him. Zero.

The Giants have a young QB in place plus a star like Barkley at RB and if they finish with the 1st or 2nd pick they will also land Chase Young giving them a young superstar on defense to build around.

Yeah, and? Rivera is going to have options. He'd be an idiot to agree to take this job before considering them, if for no other reason than salary negotiations.
I actually think...
bw in dc : 12/6/2019 11:35 am : link
Rivera's market could be more narrow than people think. I think the league may see him as a better coordinator fit.

So we can keep him in the mix as a candidate, but we should do a very wide and deep search. After the fake GM search, the last thing we need is to bookend that with a fake HC search.

I do like the idea of removing Shurmur now so we can start lining up candidates, especially since we know Carolina is the first into the market.

I have the worst feeling, however, we're throwing dirt on Shurmur's grave prematurely...

firing Shurmur now should only be to get a leg up on a desired College coach. Otherwise I want Shurmur staying and hopefully fucking up enough to loose every game the rest of the season.
Fair points
BillyM : 12/6/2019 11:37 am : link
Shurmur definitely has to go. But you probably are right that Rivera will wait for all offers.

I can't believe we gave PS a five year contract, Rivera is the guy you
Zeke's Alibi : 12/6/2019 11:38 am : link
give that too. What about PS did they think he deserved that. Stability for stability's sake is fucking stupid. At least if we lose out on Rivera the coaching pool seems a lot more interesting this year.

I have little doubt Shula or Bettcher could get us to the same the same conclusion you desire... ;)

It's almost like some of you think that ownership is trying to lose.

Exactly...
There are people who live in this metro area bubble who believe everyone wants to come to NY.
Forget it. Jerruh already signed him.

I don't get the love for Rivera
Beer Man : 12/6/2019 12:35 pm : link
He had three winning seasons out of 9 with Carolina. He doesn't inspire me to believe the Giants would be any more successful with him on the sidelines. Jason Garret would be worse.

I don't either, so we keep DG and have Rivera as coach, so now we're trying to follow the Carolina Panthers road to where??? Plus there's that stupid Riverboat Ron nickname, almost as bad as Danny dimes.
Rivera looks like a plus DC
JonC : 12/6/2019 12:44 pm : link
but if you watched him as HC there were consistent head scratchers with his game management, and inconsistent performances by his teams for most of his seasons in CAR. Not a HC candidate on my list.
Jon, agree
ColHowPepper : 12/6/2019 12:59 pm : link
same with Garrett, just a product of his DC and OC. Get rid of all the 'obvious' candidates and do some spade work. Giants are in a serious, negative feedback loop where all they want is quick fixes and quick answers. Sad pass they've come to.
CHP
JonC : 12/6/2019 1:06 pm : link
They had a golden opportunity two years to get the process started, and I agree they took the easy way out, imo. Many of us feared this very thing at the time. It takes courage to get outside the box and really self-scout from the bare bones out.

Wait do you mean you believe Gettleman HAS talked to him or hasn't.

I would think, IF Gettleman is competent, whether or not he is going to fire PS, he would 'check in' with an old friend whom he worked with and just see how he's doing, no? If you think he hasn't, why not? Serious question.

Yes, I absolutely believe he has talked to him. I was reading about Rivera and Gettleman the other day and Rivera mentioned that he had texted back and forth with Gettleman after the Barkley pick, and what an oustanding player he was going to be, etc.... No doubt in my mind that Gettleman reached out to Rivera after he was fired.
For all of you that whine about Rivera’s inconsistency, there are only
Spider56 : 12/6/2019 1:52 pm : link
a few HC that seem to win year in year out regardless of what happens around them ... BB, Pete Carroll, Sean Payton, Mike Tomlin and Andy Reid.
Rivera has done very well considering he had a kooky owner and nutcase though talented QB. He’s my choice to get us back to respectability.
The Giants are in a tough situation with the Head Coach
Rudy5757 : 12/6/2019 2:06 pm : link
We are coming off a terrible stretch, we will have fired 3 coaches in 5 years and we really have no proven building blocks on O or D. You could say we have our QB but we could also say we dont. You look over the roster and there are way more questions than answers.

Who is our best player on O and D? Who plays consistently at a high level? It's very hard to evaluate this talent right now. Are they under performing or are they just not good? If you put every NFL player in a draft would any Giants player crack the 1st 3 rounds. maybe barkley? Lawrence or Peppers on D?
If Shurmur gets fired (still say it's an if)
allstarjim : 12/6/2019 3:00 pm : link
And I do think Rivera is a good coach, I think he's probably not the guy you want with this young team. I still prefer Josh McDaniels. I think he's innovative, and with his track record as BB's offensive guru, he's the guy you want bringing along Daniel Jones. And he's only 43, Rivera is 57. Not saying Rivera is too old, but I want the next head coach to be young enough that he's not looking to retire after the next 7 to 10 years. If it works out, I want my coach to be there for the long haul.
The other guy I'd like if
allstarjim : 12/6/2019 4:15 pm : link
McDaniels is not an option...at least someone I'd be interested in...is John DeFilippo.
Yeah. Great idea.
Hsilwek92 : 12/6/2019 4:39 pm : link
Hire another retread from the fucking Panthers.

And exactly what has Ron Rivera done to have people clamoring for him? Take away his that fluke 15 win season and, he’s under .500.

Screw hiring another goddamn retread.
Regarding the 5-year contracts for HCs, don’t worry about it
Ivan15 : 12/7/2019 2:50 pm : link
It isn’t your money. If Mara and TIsch not want to spend it, they don’t care about the product on the field.

Shurmur just didn’t have the personality to Coach this team or build an effective staff.
