the raanan-casillas podcast got me thinking.
the giants are presently the worst team in football, and are about to reach a period where they will have their most consecutive losses in over a half a century, assuming of course that they lose to the eagles this monday.
i have pinned my hopes for a turnaround on steve tisch- a most unlikely savior, to be sure.
to this point, my main memory of steve tisch is of him making out with a 20-something year-old hottie during the 2014 dallas game, oblivious as the giants cruised to their 7th loss in a row that season.
what are the odds he is so completely fed up with the ineptitude he's half paid attention to since 2013 that he makes a stink and forces mara to hire a president of football operations or some outside consulting group to make those "wholesale" changes mara disingenuously claimed he was going to make following the 3-13 season in 2017?
at this point i think its obvious the giants problems go far beyond gettleman or even shurmur. although shurmur is clearly a poor in-game coach and seems two or three steps behind in all aspects of being a head coach, the metaphor of re-arranging deck chairs on the titanic comes to mind.
john, chris, their nephew or whoever else have lifetime appointments in scouting and player eval, ronnie barnes, etc. i believe to be the more serious and enduring problems.
what are the odds steve forces john to face these harsh truths, john has an epiphany and realizes the only solution is to bring in a proven outsider who has a record of showing he knows what he's doing, john fucks off to the owners suite, chris fucks off to the kentucky derby and the giants get the organizational enema they need so badly?
much easier to see this not happening and them just hiring rivera or garrett, right?
help us steve tisch. you're our only hope.
Francessa brought up an interesting concept of transition - neither of these guys is getting any younger, there doesn't seem to be any heir apparent in terms of day to day leadership, and continued losses will impact the value of the franchise, even if not on a large scale.
At some point, maybe the need for transition comes up in discussion?
Say you decide to take this route, you then need a few weeks for a candidate search (Unless someone is already in mind) then they would need to decide what to do with Gettlman and Shurmur. Assuming they both get fired, you would then have to hire a GM and a head coach when every other franchise in the league has had a jump start at hiring your candidates.
This is also why I think Tepper fired Rivera when he did, there is probably a college coach he’s targeting that he wants a head start on interviewing.
With the cap and early contracts of Jones and Barkley the time is now.
I am confident many who have lived through the seasons of terrible football have less of an interest walking the same path especially due to the overtones of the NFL today. While others who have been fortunate to jump onto the raft to catch the last two superbowl titles are itchy tonsay the least too.
The season ticket list had been eradicated, the Stadium is a borderline insult to a hot of others, as the overall treatment, product, along with various cost factors dampen the enthusiasm once strong within the fiber of BigBlue.
the problem is that "they" hired Gettleman which has clearly set this franchise back.
Say whatever you want about Daniel Jones, or whatever, but the facts are in the record. Denominated by wins and losses.
the defense has not improved. the head coach has not been a successful hire. the brash shit talking by the GM has not proven correct.
The players the GM drafted are not improving.
the Odell trade has yielded no wins. Mara has lost a fucking metric ton of $ trading Odell.
the JPP and Vernon trades have yielded nothing
This is the problem. Winning cures everything and if this team actually "won" no one would talk any crap about "analytics"
"they" picked the wrong GM.
The wrong GM picked the wrong Head coach.
And at every point the GM got up to the podium and rubbed it in everyones face about how he was right, knew what he was doing, or was going to be right.
but he's been dead wrong.
Mara doesn't need to hire a director of FBO, or someone above the GM if he would just pick the right GM. This is the conversation tisch needs to have with Mara. Whose gonna pick the right GM? if its not mara then they need to bring someone else in who can.
