NFT: Once Upon A Time in America a Q. Tarantino Film no spoilers

Torrag : 12/7/2019 11:29 pm
So I watched this tonight. Not saying it wasn't mildly entertaining, nostalgic, oddly put together, etc but what the Hell was this thing about? Was there a plot here that I just missed?
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?

Typical QT movie, his take on the Tate-Labianca murders.
If you were around back then, you may have liked the nods to old TV shows, Bruce Lee etc.
I happened to like it a lot.
yeah Hollywood, that's the gin typing

I was looking for more of the random tie ins that linked characters meaningfully in say Pulp Fiction. Hard to do but it seemed a little too disjointed for me anyway.

I agree. It was fun to watch but at the end I asked the same question - was there a plot there? Still above average though IMO.
It’s

A masterpiece. One of the ten best films of the decade.

Why?
If it has to be explained

you should probably just watch another movie.
I agree, what was so good about it?

I mean it was ok, but I just don't see anything pointing to it being some kind of great movie.
I loved it

Great movie.
This is how every

thread goes for a QT movie. But this is also how it goes for most “nominated” movies as well - a bunch love it, some say it was ok, and the rest call it “the worst movie I saw this year”.

I love QT.
While we're talking about Tarantino, he's been pretty impressive as

an actor. He had that small role in Pulp Fiction and a larger one in 2 episodes of the first season of Alias (starring Jennifer Garner).
I love QT as well

and love Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs especially. With that said, I found his most enjoyable film to be Jackie Brown. It had all the wonderful dialogue of PF and RDs but it also had a more conventional plot that I think Quentin Tarantino movies often do not have (although they do have plots they are mainly gimmicky as opposed to Jackie which was real as substantial and not gimmicky)

Notably (at least to me), Jackie Brown was QT's only film that he adapted from something someone else wrote - in this case the great Elmore Leonard's 'Rum Punch,' a fun book to read if you get your hands on it.

Funny, because during 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' I was thinking about Elmore Leonard and the way he would establish his characters and then they would go off in a direction you didn't expect. That's actually what I liked about 'Once Upon a Time' but felt the loose ends could have been tied up better.

'All the Streets are Silent.'

"Except when Rick Dalton's got a fuckin' shotgun, I'll tell you that."
One of my favorite Tarantino films

It was really good. Brad Pitt made the film, though.
