With the Giants' cap space, most likely very high draft slot, and a better coaching job, I think this team can flip their defense into a top 10 unit pretty quickly.
Edge rush: draft Chase Young, sign Markus Golden if his price is reasonable. I let him walk if he gets priced above 15 mil per.
Free safety, either through the draft or a free agent signing. Or we already have him in Love.
ILB my cursory look so far thinks draft. And that's with Connelly coming back strong. I am done with Ogletree...
I would agree, that Chase Young would a great add to this defense.
Love and Peppers might be safety solution....
2 tackles and a center are also needed.
Slayton was another nice surprise....Coleman was also making strides prior to him getting hurt....has Tate and Shepard even been on the field together? And for that matter Engram. Another weapon, ideally in a big body would be nice as well.
Here is a way to look at having the number 1 pick, you get one player and then for the rest of the draft you're drafting behind the Super Bowl champ. Makes it kind of hard to catch up, ever.

I agree Willie
If we get number one I’d be a fan of trading it for a haul
For example. Trade to Miami for their three first round picks
Miami is desperate for a QB now that Tua is a big question mark
They would want Burrows now
Watching the team speed of other teams, especially at ILB, the Giants need that badly. They are just to doggone slow in the middle.

Leverage Miami's trade offer to Cincinnati and get their 2nd to drop one spot to #2. Now you have Chase and 2 very high 2nd round picks. Pick 1 OL and one of FS, CB. LB, another OL basically whatever you dont land in Free agency.

It's a funny form of compliment when someone tosses a line at you - the bit about the overall #1 pick being what you get for being worst - that you originally wrote.
I penned that line, on here, many years ago.
Didn't get much discussion off it then.
A lot depends on whether Williams signs and at what cost. If he leaves in free agency, the Giants still have big issues in their front. Outside of Tomlinson and Lawrence, the rotation is pretty lean. Hill and McIntosh have shown to be largely non-factors.
At linebacker Ogletree's cost benefit is atrocious. He's a top a 10 paid player at this position and I'd argue a bottom 10 performer. Connelly is not only recovering from injury, but was a 5th round guy who needed a lot of reps that he's missing. He's not stepping into to the starting line up in camp.
At the edge position, again a lot depends on Golden. He's a good player, and despite much complaining the Giants pass rush has been middle of the pack all year. If Golden leaves, the Giants will have to replace his production. It's also quite optimistic a rookie will replicate his numbers. Carter hasn't made any strides. Ximines hopefully takes the steps in year 2 that Hill and Carter did not.
Hopefully Love can supplant Bethea, and Peppers can build on an up and down season.
At corner can the Giants afford to pay Jenkins like an All Pro for another mediocre season? If they move on from Jenkins the Giants will field a 2nd year Baker, Ballentine, and Beal. That's a lot of youth and hope.
Honestly, for the Giants to jump from awful to very good on defense, basically everything will have to improve.
Watching the team speed of other teams, especially at ILB, the Giants need that badly. They are just to doggone slow in the middle.
I agree 100%. Golden is worth resigning only at the right price. As someone else wrote, perhaps we can tag him at a 2nd round level...
But it's not blind hope. I have seen reasons to like Baker, Beal, Love, Ballentine, and especially Peppers. Jenkins and Ogletree should be pared from the roster for cap savings.

I think Peppers is the most likely to be "who he is" -- a passable starter, but not a super high ceiling guy. I see a really athletic guy who makes and misses a lot of plays.
Among the other kids in the secondary, it would be improbable but marvelous if they all hit. I expect something short of that. It would be fantastic if all of those guys built the core of a secondary.
It's going to be a weird year in UFA -- a lot of the teams with big money are either in or knocking on the door of the playoffs. I think many will be surprised the market for Golden and Williams. A few teams with big time cash are a couple of good players from being in serious contention in 2020.
I bet combined they have near a 30M cap hit in 2020. If that's what it takes to just keep this group together, and they don't add more UFA talent, I don't see a huge jump next year.
Are you mixing up RFA tenders with tags? Or are you genuinely advocating putting the franchise tab on Markus Golden? And if you do want to use a tag on Golden, what do you do with Williams?
Golden is not the type of player you waste your tag on, IMO. Even Williams feels like a stretch to consider the tag, too. But I guess that's where we are as Giants fans - so utterly bereft of talent on the roster that we're willing to even consider tagging (and consequently overpaying) mediocre talent.
We've become the lonely guy at the bar talking up the slumpbusters in the corner.

the Giants best threat on the edge, the guy jumps offside often and just does not get enough pressure for a $15 mill deal. For $8 mill, yeah ok.

That's not how it works. You're probably confusing RFA tenders with franchise/transition tags.
The rest is just nice to have but not a prerequisite to a good defense. Simmons would be a nice get to add talent at the safety position and cover the slot. Bargain shop for a run stuffer LB and/or look to the mid/late rounds of the draft.
The defense isn’t bereft of talent. The bones are there, it just needs some pieces to compliment what’s there and a coach to bring it all together.
One of these years the Giants will in fact surprise the league by being awful, and then magically turning it around in a year.
I'd say 1/50 chances a year this happens, so by the time the robotics play the aliens, good bet it happens.
I agree.
I prefer Shaq Thompson.
DL--- I think if GMEN get Young and LW - Lawrence is projected to be terrific I would think - you'd have a strong DL with Young as the beast. Between Young, Lawrence, LW and Tomlinson you have a real good front 4.
At LB you get Shaq - you have to hope Connelly is good enough and you have Carter then you have Xman as the backup OLB.
for CB keep jackrabbit and see what the other 3 can do.
for safety - you have an opportunity for either FA or 2nd round draft pick. suppose you can't get either fa or 2nd round? Or maybe Love shows us something? Or you can look to package a cheap player such as BJ Hill with a future next year pick to get something this upcoming year. There are some teams with cap issues.
for OLINE-- You need two players. A center and a Tackle. For example get Conklin then tradeup slightly with a next year pick along with packaging a player to get 1 st rd quality Center - maybe Biadasz.
There you go-- Now in the front 7 you have 4 quality players and Tomlinson who is pretty good. Questions at MLB and 1 OLB. Then Jackrabbit with all the young players then at safety if Love can't handle it - you have other options.
