Giants 3rd Round Picks Over the Past Decade

nyjuggernaut2 : 12/8/2019 12:29 pm
2019 - Ximines
2018 - L.Carter, BJ Hill
2017 - Davis Webb
2016 - Darian Thompson
2015 - O.Odighizuwa
2014 - Jay Bromley
2013 - DaMontre Moore
2012 - Jayron Hosley
2011 - J.Jernigan
2010 - Chad Jones
2009 - Ramses Barden, Travis Beckum

I know a lot of the talk has been how dumb the trade for Williams was, and I get the argument considering his free agency status at the end of the season. However, looking back at the Giants recent history of 3rd round picks you can see it hasn’t been great. In fact, it’s been pretty poor across the board. At least with Williams you know you are getting a solid player. And although he hasn’t lived up to the hype he had coming out of college, he has upgraded the Giants run defense since the trade, and he is more of a sure thing going forward than any player the Giants would’ve drafted in the 3rd round this upcoming draft.

the last two years we still dont know what we have.

but my god the decade before that. WOW....thats literally not a single quality player. reese was HORRIBLE outside of round 1

wasnt ximenes like a 4 or 5?
Each of Gettleman 3rd round picks

Have already shown more promise than ALL of Reese's 3rd round picks combined. People can poo poo Dave all they want, and I get it. But he's been far superior to Reese on draft day, which isnt saying much but... progress is progress? Lol
You realize that there isn’t a single OL pick in that
cosmicj : 12/8/2019 12:38 pm : link
Entire list? Not a single one.

christian : 12/8/2019 12:49 pm : link
You should technically include Beal as well.

Just a friendly reminder, Hill was just recently benched, Carter hasn't progressed at all this season, and Ximines is an incomplete.

Let's see how these third round picks look a year from now.

The Giants need better production out of the 3rd round, regardless of who the GM is.
It’s depressing
illmatic : 12/8/2019 12:52 pm : link
to look at that list. Shows one of the reasons why this team is in the major hole it’s in right now. It’s also depressing because this years pick would have been at the top of the round and they gave it up to look at a guy who is going to be a free agent.

Ximines went in the 3rd round, 95th overall.
Anyone take note of Thompsons performance Thursday?
John In CO : 12/8/2019 1:12 pm : link
11 tackles, 8 solo, a sack, a couple TFL's, a QB hit......this is the guy who lost his job to Curtis Riley. Probably just a case of a one game wonder, but thats a pretty good game. Probably best single NFL game by anyone on that list in a while!

Agreed. Aside from the last two years, which are still unknown, that is atrocious.
Let’s just trade the third round pick

Every year then. Following your logic.
BJ Hill right now would

Not saying that, just making a point that having a third round pick this upcoming draft doesn’t automatically mean the Giants would’ve drafted a good player.

Doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have. Especially if they had a new GM

1000% false.

At worst he's solid depth.
Danielle Hunter just became the youngest player to reach 50 sacks.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/8/2019 3:23 pm : link
He was the the next college DE taken after Odighizuwa, in the third round of the 2015 draft.
So because
MookGiants : 12/8/2019 3:30 pm : link
the Giants front offices haven't done well with 3rd round picks, it's ok for the Giants to just throw away a pick in the 60's for an audition with a player who is going to be a free agent anyways.

Anyone rationalizing that trade is an imbecile. The Jets weren't going to franchise him, so they could have easily had him in the off-season for just money. Instead if they want him for 2020 he will have cost them a pick in the 60's plus a ton of money.

Because the 3rd round picks have sucked the past decade
pjcas18 : 12/8/2019 3:30 pm : link
means you should overpay in trades and give up 3rd round picks.

that's the logic?
League wide stats on 3rd rounders success rate is bad
Torrag : 12/8/2019 3:36 pm : link
Scales from below 50% at the top of the round to about 30% toward the end of the round. That's guys that carve out a legit NFL career, not ST fodder gone at the end of their rookie contract.

BrettNYG10 : 12/8/2019 3:37 pm : link
When the Giants were good, their third round pick contributors included Tuck, Manningham, and Alford. Mid-round picks are more likely to be busts than not, but you need some of them to be successful to be good. And I think you need more bites at the apple to find them.
Chad Jones
jpetuch : 12/8/2019 3:49 pm : link
looked like he had some promise but the car accident sadly ended his NFL career before it even started.

christian : 12/8/2019 3:54 pm : link
Mid round picks are also valuable if/when the opportunity arises to move back into the 1st round, and select a player you desire with an additional year of cost control.

The Giants 2nd and 3rd might have put the Giants back in 20s to get another higher likelihood good player.

Past failure isn't an excuse for current.
If we do happen to sell our first round pick
Jimmy Googs : 12/8/2019 4:34 pm : link
we should definitely not ask for any extra 3rd picks as part of that deal...
So we're about to pay
bw in dc : 12/8/2019 4:55 pm : link
at least $16M - assuming the minimum outcome of using the FT - for a player who has averaged 3.5 sacks/yr over his five years, and he has zero this year, as our 2020 third rounder.

I'd rather have that pick, maybe get one of the very good receivers in this deep draft, and pay that salary instead of the wasted money on LW.

It was a brutally idiotic trade by a GM who should be fired before Shurmur.
100 percent false

Williams will get nowhere near 16 million per season... You just make shit up as you go along.. Anything to fit your pathetic narrative.

+1 great point. High 3rd rounders are great capital to move up in the first or even late in the 2nd round. This trade was just incredibly awful

Grady Jarret is an incredibly close comp in terms of age and production, and he signed for 4/68 with 38 fully guaranteed last season.

If Williams is tagged as an exclusive rights franchise player, depending on his position designation, he'll make between 16-18M.

Do you feel Williams is a markedly less valuable player?
You can't have it both ways
jcn56 : 12/8/2019 11:22 pm : link
Either you believe that Williams was in demand and you had to trade a 3rd and a 4th round pick just for the right to tag him when he hits FA, or you don't.

Obviously if you don't, then trading for him was idiotic from the jump. And if you do believe trading picks to secure those rights makes sense, then you're expecting to pony up Jarrett money and then some - for a player tagged in the OP as a 'solid player'.

The only way he doesn't test FA is if the giants overpay for him, a horrible move by a horrible GM.
Hate To Think
Jeffrey : 12/9/2019 8:32 am : link
that the message is that the Giants are incompetent in drafting so it's okay to give away the pick for a rental player who will be either grossly overpaid to stay or walk after less than a season.

Regardless of what you think of Reese, DG is a disaster and should not be given the opportunity to blow another off-season with his erratic approach to rebuilding on the fly. The OL is worse than last year. The 2018 draft looks much worse today than it did 4 months ago. The coaches he hired have failed to improve the team. The free agents are with only 1-2 exceptions all bad moves and the trades are incomprehensible for a team that is rebuilding. By all means keep DG and let some of us older fans wonder if we will be around to see the Giants as a legitimate contender again.
Isn’t that track record part of the reason Reese got fired?
ron mexico : 12/9/2019 8:41 am : link
Not sure that’s a strong argument for the LW being a good move by Getts
