Will the Giants core show pride tonight?

Jim from Katonah : 12/9/2019 9:05 am
Disastrous season, Shurmur hopefully gone, year 3 of the rebuild will bring with it a lot of new faces and a new regime ... but I think the play of the Giants core guys in a hostile environment will speak to whether they have the heart needed to eventually turn this around. For one thing, I want to see an alert and physical Saquon show up tonight in pass protection, want to see the OL play crisply and with urgency, want to see Big Dex and the defensive guys we are supposed to be building around battle to the end. Good players play with a pride that can transcend bad coaching — let’s see what they got tonight.

They're just not talented enough
JonC : 12/9/2019 9:12 am : link
to make a difference, just get to 2-14 and deliver more talent. 2019 essentially doesn't matter, many of these guys won't be here when they're winning again.
I think we’ll see a typical Giants game ...
Spider56 : 12/9/2019 9:14 am : link
On offense, we’ll see dopey runs up the middle for no gain, a few holding calls on the OL, and lots of pressure on Eli when we’re in 3rd and long.
On defense, we’ll be good against the run but get torched by Ertz etal on 3rd down. As usual, the Giants d will make an average QB look like an all-pro.

Too bad the temps will be Warm ... I’d love to see the Eagles fans sit in freezing rain.
RE: They're just not talented enough
Jim from Katonah : 12/9/2019 9:35 am : link
I mostly agree with that, but there are a few guys with presumably “build around” talent — Saquon and Lawrence to name two. I’m curious to see whether they show the fire of a guy like say, Jamal Adams is showing, in a similarly disastrous situation with an embattled coach. Gotta start somewhere, and a few “I refuse to accept losing” guys can create the peer pressure that eventually leads to winning.

In other words, if Malcolm Jenkins comes blitzing in at 100mph, I want to see Saquon and his 230lbs make a statement.
Call me delusional,
BlueLou'sBack : 12/9/2019 9:40 am : link
but I see Eli carving Philly up if given half a chance.

He's done it before to Philly, only let down by the defense or STs at the last moment for the W to elude his grasp.

We will look good for the first 5 minutes or so

then get completely outcoached the rest of the way. Once the Eagles staff sees what we are doing, they will adjust and we wont.

Saquon, Hernandez, Lawrence (our last 3 first rounders), and Zeitler and and the three young guys in our secondary.
Highly Doubt it

I disagree on the tank for Chase approach. With the 100% injury rate and the smaller impact that he’ll have as just one of 30 plus starters on the field, I think a winning culture (built by the players) matter more — in other words, there are no meaningless games. I realize I’m in the minority on that, though.
There is no core.

The only man in virtually this entire organization who has earned his stripes as a giant is Eli.

One man core.

HOORAY! An actual Giants' fan rooting for his team to win, not lose.

I'm so tired of the posts that say real fans who root for their team are actually "only Eli fans and not real Giants fans.
The bulk of my focus is on 2020
JonC : 12/9/2019 10:44 am : link
because Shurmur should be gone, and they start from scratch.
They show plenty of (misplaced) pride every week
David B. : 12/9/2019 10:46 am : link
It's just not backed up by skill or execution.

They can show as much pride as they want. Just don't start winning now.

I likely have Giants derangement syndrome at this point and should be ignored lol, by I’m trying to think of an example of non-QB defensive phenom like Chase Young going to a multi-year loser like the Giants, and turning the team around. All of the phenoms I can think of over the past 8-10 years — Clowney, Garrett, Mack — haven’t even won a playoff game. I guess Joey Bosa won one, but look at the LAC now.

I should probably just pack it in for the season, oyyy.

I hear you, build for the future etc. I'm in a dark place as a Giants fan. I used to always be positive about the Giant's organization and that brighter days are ahead. It is clear that I was drinking the cool aid. I would rather see Eli win now in a "meaningless" game and get that quick hit of enjoyment then speculate that the Giants will use high picks wisely. I don't trust the ownership structure anymore. I'd rather just enjoy whatever wins come our way because they are so infrequent.
that quick high
JonC : 12/9/2019 10:50 am : link
only lasts a little while. Got to get to work on 2020 and beyond, the current version is a waste of time.
Pride...?
BamaBlue : 12/9/2019 10:52 am : link
Sure. Very similar to the pride a puppy shows when they chew the crap out of your shoes.

Oyyy. Morale is low these days. No more semi-optimistic posts for me. At least we have the Knicks lol.

I understand your logic. My wife's family is a bunch of raging Eagles fans. I hate watching us get our asses kicked by the Eagles every year.

Do you think Chase Young is worth the hype? I know you have wanted an impact edge rusher for a long time.

Part of me thinks if they are going to turn it around they will turn it around even if they win a couple more games this year. When the game is over and we lose I'll be happy we will get better draft picks, but on game day and during the game I want us win if that makes sense.
Not that they're anywhere near the same level
jcn56 : 12/9/2019 11:09 am : link
but just imagine for a second if the 1980 Giants had won 1 more game that season.

They'd have picked 3 slots later, and Lawrence Taylor is almost certainly not a Giant.

Would that extra win have been worth it?
No.

I expect us to get annihilated. Thank God for beer & me having the foresight to take tomorrow off.

LT is the ultimate example of a defensive phenom becoming a direct catalyst for a turnaround. I would 100% sign up for that. I don’t have to point out how improbable it is that Chase Young will literally become the greatest defensive player in history and not just a Myles Garrett who doesn’t move the needle at all, but I like the optimism. We’ll have to agree to disagree on whether losing for a non-qb pick is a good strategy, though. I’m in the minority, to be sure.

Before I sign off on this thread — in which I’m clearly in the losing minority in the “lose for Chase Young” argument lol — serious question: if we had a real winner as our GM, a Bill Parcells, Ozzie Newsome, Bill Walsh, or Ron Wolff for example, do you think that these gentlemen would see these last 4 games as meaningless, as a mere vessel to get us Chase Young? I don’t think they would — curious if you guys think otherwise.

Honestly - how does anyone know?

You'd have to gauge them by what they say publicly, and no exec is going to come out and say they're trying to lose.

I know this much - the drop in talent in the top few draft picks is usually pretty steep. A couple of wins here could seriously set the Giants back, and the likelihood of finding an impact player will be harder. I doubt any of those guys would want to throw games, but if they didn't think any sustainable improvement in play was being made, I doubt they'd want to sacrifice a chance at a better player.

Fair enough. I don’t agree the fall off in the picks is as big as you say (go through a few years of draft results — K Mack, J Ramsey, J Adams, J Allen, JJ Watt all outside the top 4) — but hope Chase Young turns out great.
