Since we have a variety of things being discussed in the Mets and Yankees thread and it's starting to get muddied, might as well get an encompassing Winter Meetings Thread going and the usual spin off threads can happen.
A bit of news coming out so far (which we know)
- Yankees offer to Cole has been leaked and no one else seems to be in on him as of yet.
- Didi might be heading to the Phillies on a multiyear deal
- Steve Pearce has "unofficially retired"
Because it's out in San Diego, news will probably come in later in the day, and trades tend to get announced later in the night as the GMs get a little more drunk ;)
They're a joke.
He's (or his people) have been candid, he's going to the highest bidder.
no pretense, no bullshit. I can respect that.
This is one time where I side with the "Big Stein never would have stood for this" people. GS3 would have paid any amount of fines until the end of time to keep that shit off of their jerseys.
Fucking Nike. Couldn't just leave it on the sleeve, nooooooo......

So, I presume you’re ready to set aside your hate for Cole, if he does in fact join the Death Star

Desecration of a national monument. Big George would be pissed. All kidding aside, really is disgusting to look at.
I believe it was in response to MLB putting Spiderman logos on the bases or something to promote the movie.
Actually, I think it’s 98% money.
Don’t think analytics play any role, especially since all teams use them
And winning is a double edged sword with Yankees because more than any other team they are expected to win and when they don’t it gets represented as failure.
I don't think so as there are already concerns about Bumgarner's diminishing velocity. He was better last season but I would be very hesitant to hand him a contract longer than 2-3 years. He is an excellent post season performer though.
The Braves were rumored to be targeting Bumgarner but I doubt they will make a serious offer after adding Hamels.
FAR more mileage on his arm, plus Bumgarner's last 3 seasons don't show much in the way of expected improvement. I also doubt a team would be particularly happy if he continued with the same performance for another 3+ years at big money. I'm no Zack Wheeler fan, but I think a team could at least convince themselves that he has room to grow.
I personally wouldn't pay him near as much as I'd pay Wheeler. Tons and tons of mileage, and it's shown up already in lost velocity. He's given up tons of hard contact the past 2 seasons.
He'll always have the bulldog mentality, which is worth something. But I'm not an eager buyer of that stock right now.
Just my opinion.
But I fell he will try something stupid to get rid of Lowrie (who could be a factor this year and lose Smith/Davis)
Damn I miss Ari Gold... LloYDDDDDDDDDDD!!!
Who gets Rendon now?
Hopefully this speeds Cole to NYY.
So, 7/250 for Cole?
Quote:
7/$220 (though presumably a healthy chunk deferred).
7/245 according to Passan

Actually, I take that back.
8/300? I forgot Cole is two years younger.

Source: Gerrit Cole is increasingly likely to sign during this week’s winter meetings. His market is developing quickly, the source said, with the Strasburg signing giving further clarity. @MLBNetwork @MLB
Imagine if deGrom held out and got to the open market? Best guess to what he would get?

Mets got lucky there, Degrom is underpaid. He would at least get Strasburgs deal. If I had to guess, his number would right below whatever Cole gets

Lmfao at Joel. You don’t need a source for that, we’ve known that since last week
So the competition for Cole will probably be the Angels.
So the competition for Cole will probably be the Angels.
It’s been real quiet about the Angels, as to what their money limit is and how Cole feels about them. All we hear is that they’re close to home
So the competition for Cole will probably be the Angels.
Their owner said last week(?) they can probably only keep one of Stras/Rendon. That's why I'm not surprised one of these deals happened quickly.
Right now i think there would be a market for stanton especially if the yankees eat a little bit of that contract, but in a few years that contract is going to be untradable and they are going to need payroll flexibility.

There is no way Stanton gets traded unless the Yanks are willing to eat a huge portion of that salary. You dont think teams around the league are noticing what is going on with Stanton?
Get it done Cashman.
Get it done Cashman.
Angels suck. I don't think sunny weather and familiarity is enough for Cole to go there. Yankees travel well but seeing an Angels home game is straight-up depressing when I've attended.
Additionally, Sherman says they will make the formal offer tonight and Jack Curry said they will make a “very, very competitive offer”.
I doubt we’re getting outbid for him, we’re the New York Yankees
So the competition for Cole will probably be the Angels.
That's what I've been reading too - Dodgers already have a deep and strong rotation. Rendon makes more sense than Cole if they are going to sign a huge money free agent.
So it's the weak ass Angels. As I've said, it would shock me if Cole chose them unless their offer was substantially better.
Pretty much the entire Cubs roster is open for trade discussion.

before his contract becomes an albatross. I dont hate stanton at all but when you factor in what cole is going to get potentially plus they are going to need to extend judge, torres, possibly sanchez and DJ (next year ) in a few years that contract is going to look bad.

I dont think thats true. The Marlins are eating some of the salary already, so i think the yankees will have to eat some of it also but a huge portion ? no not even close.
He is still 30 years old and in his prime. Sure he had an injury plagued season last year which is why they will have to eat some money but there are teams who miss out on Free agents that are going to want to make a splash and bringing a former MVP in his prime maybe at a discount is not a bad backup plan.
It's also why i think they should do it now because if they wait another year and he has another of year that contract is untradable .
That was mentioned at the start of free agency that they were lurking. But the reports were when they hired Kapler that Cole wouldn't play for him and they will be out.

If they offer the most money, he'll play for Gabe Kapler.

No way in hell, the Giants come close to the Yankees or angels in this
Predicting 8/300 in the Post..Yikes. 8/280 would be AAV $35mill...I'd say minimum now.
I can't imagine anything less than 9/$345M gets this done when you consider that NYY, LAD, LAA, SF and PHI are all bidding.
All the Yankees have to do is be close on the money/years.

The bit I read this morning (can’t find it to link) mentioned Cole is tight with his brother in law Brandon Crawford on the Giants
But that alone smells of a reporter throwing darts - until we read about the Giants making an offer or at least meeting with Cole, I don’t see it as more than that
Good times, man.
Good times.

Haha - I do like the vibe of the Yankees going full Evil Empire again here. We all know there aren’t many free agents necessarily worth it, but hard to argue a starter like Cole is exactly what’s kept them from getting over the hump the past 3 years

Nah, can't imagine the Yanks going over 8 years. 8/$300.

All it takes is one team.
I have a feeling the Cole will sign with the Yankees by tonight. And once that's resolved, that will free up the other moves they are considering.
Precisely. He's cried wolf enough times.
Cole swings the power in the AL. Yanks can’t allow him to go back to Houston.
I agree. I think it's NYY versus the LA teams. Cole/Boras are going to squeeze every dollar out of this though, and they have really insane leverage given how good Cole is and with Strasburg and Wheeler signed.
Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with a truly insane number. Strasburg is two years older, not as good, and has a history of injury trouble. He got 7 years. I'd be shocked if Cole got less than 8, and think he might get 9. 9yrs/$345M?
For example, let's say 8 year offer is for $38 million/year ($304M) and the 9 year offer is for $36M/year ($324). That's obviously an extra $20M for the last year.
However, over the first 8 years of the deal the Yankees are saving not just the $2M/year, but whatever luxury taxes they'd pay on that $2M. If we estimate those charges at 40%, the total saved over the first 8 years of the deal would be $2.8M year X 8 years = $22.4M. So the last year would only cost an additional $14M ($36M minus the $22M saved in prior 8 years) .
But by 2028 $14M would almost certainly be well less than average salary for starting pitchers. Theoretically Cole could even be a steal at that price point in 2028.

Specifically, Mets open to moving Brandon Nimmo per sources
I am truly fearful for what he does in this period before Cohen's $ gets unlocked. The budget restrictions of the Wilponzis plus the pressure of an inexperienced GM feeling like his job is on the line is a potentially toxic combination.
If he deals off any more of the farm he's going to seriously cripple the organization in a way that will take years to recover from even with Cohens $.
