NFT: NFT: MLB Winter Meetings Thread

Matt in SGS : 12/9/2019 1:13 pm
Since we have a variety of things being discussed in the Mets and Yankees thread and it's starting to get muddied, might as well get an encompassing Winter Meetings Thread going and the usual spin off threads can happen.

A bit of news coming out so far (which we know)

- Yankees offer to Cole has been leaked and no one else seems to be in on him as of yet.
- Didi might be heading to the Phillies on a multiyear deal
- Steve Pearce has "unofficially retired"

Because it's out in San Diego, news will probably come in later in the day, and trades tend to get announced later in the night as the GMs get a little more drunk ;)

Is an agent and he's there now. If I hear anything, I'll post. His firm reps Aaron Judge.
The Dodgers apparently have not met with Boras yet...
Dunedin81 : 12/9/2019 1:32 pm : link
about Cole. Could be just too long for Andrew Friedman. Presumably LAA will make an offer though.
It really does seem like the Yankees have an opening here
Greg from LI : 12/9/2019 1:38 pm : link
to simply blow everyone else away from the jump. If the money's equal, I would be floored if Cole chose the sorryass Angel organization over the Yankees. This is a franchise that has had a modern day Mickey Mantle for eight years and gotten one playoff series out of it - one playoff series in which they were swept.

They're a joke.

After he gets the call from Fred that he still can't spend any money.

Money + winning + analytics make the Yankees a clear frontrunner.

Not sure what to make of Peter Gammons - his tweets make it seem like Cole/NYY is already done, to the point where you have to consider he's been hacked or is trolling. Hopefully ol' Pete still has some connections.
Who knows if its true
pjcas18 : 12/9/2019 1:42 pm : link
but if it is I find Cole's approach to be refreshing.

He's (or his people) have been candid, he's going to the highest bidder.

no pretense, no bullshit. I can respect that.
Really wanted Didi to get a ring with the Yanks before he left.

I'm not trying to be insulting here
Greg from LI : 12/9/2019 1:45 pm : link
But I'm not sure Peter Gammons has all of his mental faculties after his stroke. He's been out of the loop in MLB for a while now. I do think things look very good with Cole, but not based on anything Gammons has said.
Just picturing Gammons trying to actually use twitter
figgy2989 : 12/9/2019 1:48 pm : link
Is pretty damn amusing.
Yeah I didn't want to insult him either
bceagle05 : 12/9/2019 1:51 pm : link
but I agree about his mental faculties, though he seemed lucid on the MLB Network last night. Perhaps he has good and bad moments.

This is one time where I side with the "Big Stein never would have stood for this" people. GS3 would have paid any amount of fines until the end of time to keep that shit off of their jerseys.

Fucking Nike. Couldn't just leave it on the sleeve, nooooooo......

So, I presume you’re ready to set aside your hate for Cole, if he does in fact join the Death Star
I did it with Clemens, I can do it with Cole as well

Actually, I think it’s 98% money.

Don’t think analytics play any role, especially since all teams use them

And winning is a double edged sword with Yankees because more than any other team they are expected to win and when they don’t it gets represented as failure.

Should Bumgarner get paid more than Wheeler?
Mike from SI : 12/9/2019 2:14 pm : link
He's only a year older and (obvi) has a much better track record. And if you want to point to wear-and-tear, Wheeler has already been injured.
I think Cole has worked the system perfectly
arniefez : 12/9/2019 2:17 pm : link
from the day he was drafted. If he chooses the Yankees I'll be happy, if not so be it. He's earned the right to do whatever he thinks will make him and his family happy.

I don't think so as there are already concerns about Bumgarner's diminishing velocity. He was better last season but I would be very hesitant to hand him a contract longer than 2-3 years. He is an excellent post season performer though.

The Braves were rumored to be targeting Bumgarner but I doubt they will make a serious offer after adding Hamels.

FAR more mileage on his arm, plus Bumgarner's last 3 seasons don't show much in the way of expected improvement. I also doubt a team would be particularly happy if he continued with the same performance for another 3+ years at big money. I'm no Zack Wheeler fan, but I think a team could at least convince themselves that he has room to grow.

I personally wouldn't pay him near as much as I'd pay Wheeler. Tons and tons of mileage, and it's shown up already in lost velocity. He's given up tons of hard contact the past 2 seasons.

He'll always have the bulldog mentality, which is worth something. But I'm not an eager buyer of that stock right now.

Just my opinion.
I cringe at the Mets "blockbuster" move BVW will make this week
giantsFC : 12/9/2019 2:44 pm : link
Can they just sign 2-3 decent FA relievers, Porcello, Gsellman/Lugo to SP and be done with it?

But I fell he will try something stupid to get rid of Lowrie (who could be a factor this year and lose Smith/Davis)

Imagine if deGrom held out and got to the open market? Best guess to what he would get?

For similar money he can stay at home with a team built to last. We've got the same type team but not LA.

Mets got lucky there, Degrom is underpaid. He would at least get Strasburgs deal. If I had to guess, his number would right below whatever Cole gets

Lmfao at Joel. You don’t need a source for that, we’ve known that since last week
I'd have to think Rendon
Matt in SGS : 12/9/2019 3:29 pm : link
will be leaving the Nationals after signing Straus. I would think he'll go to the Dodgers (taking a Cole bidder away).

So the competition for Cole will probably be the Angels.

It’s been real quiet about the Angels, as to what their money limit is and how Cole feels about them. All we hear is that they’re close to home

Their owner said last week(?) they can probably only keep one of Stras/Rendon. That's why I'm not surprised one of these deals happened quickly.
I think the yankees should try and trade stanton now
Giantfan21 : 12/9/2019 3:40 pm : link
before his contract becomes an albatross. I dont hate stanton at all but when you factor in what cole is going to get potentially plus they are going to need to extend judge, torres, possibly sanchez and DJ (next year ) in a few years that contract is going to look bad.

Right now i think there would be a market for stanton especially if the yankees eat a little bit of that contract, but in a few years that contract is going to be untradable and they are going to need payroll flexibility.

There is no way Stanton gets traded unless the Yanks are willing to eat a huge portion of that salary. You dont think teams around the league are noticing what is going on with Stanton?

this better be payback for Ohtani because the Angels swooping in to nab him after weeks of "he is going to the Yankees" is a debt ownership needs to settle.

Angels suck. I don't think sunny weather and familiarity is enough for Cole to go there. Yankees travel well but seeing an Angels home game is straight-up depressing when I've attended.

I doubt we’re getting outbid for him, we’re the New York Yankees
