Gettleman possibly out as GM?

Big Rick in FL : 12/9/2019 4:07 pm
Ben Volin of the Boston Globe said an NFL insider thinks Gettleman will be out as GM. Also NFL sources think Shurmur will be fired also.

Quote:
One insider predicted that at least five or six GM-type jobs will open up, after only two changes last year (Raiders, Jets). Washington’s Bruce Allen, the Giants’ Dave Gettleman, Jacksonville’s Caldwell, Denver’s Elway, and Atlanta’s Thomas Dimitroff are in trouble, with Detroit’s Quinn and the Rams’ Les Snead as long shots.

There was unanimous consent that the following head coaching jobs will come open in addition to Washington and Carolina: Atlanta, Dallas, Jacksonville, and the Giants. Dan Quinn’s Falcons have been a massive disappointment; the Giants have regressed under Pat Shurmur; Doug Marrone, GM Dave Caldwell, and executive vice president Tom Coughlin are in big trouble in Jacksonville; and nobody’s seat is hotter than Cowboys coach Jason Garrett.

Now we actually want the HC and GM to be one in the same? I remember when this notion terrified everyone here.

George Young operated in a completely different era, prior to free agency, 40 years ago. So unsurprisingly, the expectations for the two are very different.

So? Look at his record.....that's pretty damning but everyone knows he was a good personnel guy.

His five year rebuilding plan would be shipped right out of BBI today.

I'm curious...so free agency is supposed to make you instantly competitive?

He's looking good now, at least this year.

Not saying the Giants do that leap next year, but DG deserves a third year and a more competitive HC.

Rip it down after 2020 if the team doesn't make a jump.

I wanted the arrow pointing up in 2019 regardless of record and the team obviously isn't there.

I'm not leading the DG charge, but I think he needs another year.

How many times has a guy who were both HC and GM worked out in the NFL? Serious question.

Not as often as it should because it's not the standard way of running football operations in the NFL. The NFL has always fallen back on this infrastructure of Owner/GM/HC. Right?

Well, maybe that way of thinking is a relic. And it needs to change. It's not the perfect example, but a HC in the college ranks chooses his players, not the AD. Right?

So I'd prefer to have the coach pick the players to fit his scheme and who he wants to coach. And not worry about some superfluous guy being a firewall for the future...

Would take this with a dump truck of salt

It doesn't take 5 years anymore, that's the point. It took GY longer because that was the nature of a rebuild back then. But that's not the case anymore, unless of course you fuck up nearly every free agent signing and waste your first year thinking your rebuilding team is really a contender.

It's not apples to apples to compare GY to DG. The only similarity they have is that they both seem befuddled by free agency. But it was only a new concept to one of them.
Just because other GMs turned it around in year 3
BrianLeonard23 : 12/9/2019 5:07 pm : link
Doesn’t mean DG will too. Each situation is different. It’s also more likely that they were better executive than he is.

You think this is a playoff team in disguise that's just held back by coaching? They've really given you no reason to think that. This is yet again one of the worse defenses in franchise history and an OL that's as bad as the last 5 years.

That its POSSIBLE he fired Dave at the end of the year, why the fuck would he let him do the Williams trade?? That would be the most perplexing series of events yet.

Also keep in mind, a new GM is gonna want to get rid of a lot of the young guys Gettleman brought in. Possibly Lawrence, BAKER, etc. and the scary part is Jones. Maybe the new GM doesnt like him OR maybe Mara tries to force him on a GM which costs us a top candidate who's not a fan of him.

We are stuck in a very very tangled web right now. Also my ideal coach (if Tomlin doesnt hit the market which theres no way he does) would be Rivera but, do we get him without Gettleman? Who knows

So making Solder the highest paid OL in the NFL wasn't a mistake?

Giving Patrick Omameh a $15M contract with 40% of it guaranteed wasn't a mistake?

Extending OBJ to trade him a year later while eating $16M in dead money wasn't a mistake?

I'm not even going to get into the ongoing LW trade argument here, or whether keeping Eli's salary was the right move, or the constant debate on taking a RB at #2 overall as the very first move of a teardown rebuild.

DG's ONLY big mistake was hiring PS? That might be the most homerish post all year.

Odell was not a mistake.

What would you rather have? #17 overall pick + Jabrill Peppers + a 3rd round lick

Or

16m extra cap room in a completely LOST season....

Keep in mind if you go out and USE that 16m, you're lowering your compensatory pick that you would theoretically get for Beckham. You maybe end up with a 3rd or 4th round comp pick.

My guess is DG stays and hires Rivera and mostly a new staff
SGMen : 12/9/2019 6:33 pm : link
I hate changing systems so often but Shurmur isn't a quality HC and we lack an OL that can make us competitive.

I would not be shocked if Shurmur was fired and Rivera brought in with only a handful of coaching changes. Keep the offensive coordinator and system in place? I don't know man.

But would anyone be shocked if the Giants fired DG and all the coaches the day after the season ends and already has candidates in place?

We can cut the over-paid like Solder, Ellison, Jenkins, Bethea and Martin to start. Open even more cap money. But I pray we don't spend the BIG MONEY on top free agents. I truly believe you get one of these guys as a "final piece" but not to build the base of your team.

DG is out if we finish with the #1 or #2 pick in the draft. LOL

They could have tagged and traded him, for example. Maybe they get a lower secondary pick than the 3rd rounder, but they’re still better off.

It’s not even the dead money (although Gettleman’s wanton disregard for dead money is infuriating), it’s the inconsistent about-face-style management that Gettleman has displayed, with this signing and subsequent trade chief among the examples.
