Gettleman possibly out as GM?

Big Rick in FL : 12/9/2019 4:07 pm
Ben Volin of the Boston Globe said an NFL insider thinks Gettleman will be out as GM. Also NFL sources think Shurmur will be fired also.

Quote:
One insider predicted that at least five or six GM-type jobs will open up, after only two changes last year (Raiders, Jets). Washington’s Bruce Allen, the Giants’ Dave Gettleman, Jacksonville’s Caldwell, Denver’s Elway, and Atlanta’s Thomas Dimitroff are in trouble, with Detroit’s Quinn and the Rams’ Les Snead as long shots.

There was unanimous consent that the following head coaching jobs will come open in addition to Washington and Carolina: Atlanta, Dallas, Jacksonville, and the Giants. Dan Quinn’s Falcons have been a massive disappointment; the Giants have regressed under Pat Shurmur; Doug Marrone, GM Dave Caldwell, and executive vice president Tom Coughlin are in big trouble in Jacksonville; and nobody’s seat is hotter than Cowboys coach Jason Garrett.

The first sentence in the quote says an NFL insider. So I don't think it's his opinion.

Make it now so you can have a legitimate Head of Football operations/GM search. If this is simply done to promote Kevin Abrams, than we are all out of luck.

Being an insider doesn't automatically mean its based on anything specific. He predicts 5 or 6 openings so my question is the same for those as well. Is this a gut feeling or rooted in some actual substance?

I’m no insider but I think Gettleman gets three years and then retires.

Unlike some, even though I have not agreed with every Gettleman move, I don’t think he should be fired. He’s made good moves and bad moves. I’m in the camp that thinks our biggest problem (between management, coaching, and talent) is coaching.

I don’t think this needs to be a rush. If anything, it should take time. The hopes would be this hire if made would be here for the next 10-15 years, don’t rush it. Also, we’d have to wait until the playoffs are over anyway to get full access to all possible candidates.
Gettleman isn't going anywhere.

and let's hope they hire a HC to wear both hats - HC and GM.

But this is too forward thinking for Jints Central - to fire their beloved Accorsi's recommendation after two year. So I expect Gettleman to return and continue to drive this organization deeper into the sewer.
I also doubt that Elway will be out in Denver

How many times has a guy who were both HC and GM worked out in the NFL? Serious question.
I don’t think DG is out after this year
Toastt34 : 12/9/2019 4:25 pm : link
But it makes all the sense in the world to clean house, hire a GM and have that GM bring in his own head coach. That would be the correct way to go about this. The whole operation needs a re-boot.
I'd be thrilled
arniefez : 12/9/2019 4:25 pm : link
but I'd also be shocked. Can you imagine the owners being ok with the Williams trade? Unless of course the SR VP of Player Personnel was in the middle of it since he's one of the owners.

How do you think it's going to look and feel in the Giants draft room and on the draft shows when the Jets make that early 3rd round pick and Williams has signed somewhere else?
So what's it gonna be

Young went

Gettleman gets another year, with a competent coach. Yeah, he picked Shurmur. Now he gets to pick another..........

Every post. Every single post you just just copy and paste the same shit.

Now we actually want the HC and GM to be one in the same? I remember when this notion terrified everyone here.

I doubt Gettleman is gone

George Young operated in a completely different era, prior to free agency, 40 years ago. So unsurprisingly, the expectations for the two are very different.

So? Look at his record.....that's pretty damning but everyone knows he was a good personnel guy.

His five year rebuilding plan would be shipped right out of BBI today.

I'm curious...so free agency is supposed to make you instantly competitive?

Of course he's going to be fired
Metnut : 12/9/2019 4:46 pm : link
I'm continually astounded that a sizable contingent of people think he'll be retained and somehow given the keys to hire another coach, make another top 3 pick, and make more FA signings after how he did last time.

He's out of here.

We get separate GM /Coach positions like usual... I can't think of one available person that I'd give both jobs to. I'm not sure there is a GM candidate from the past, (successful or not) that I'd consider hiring. I really think a younger, progressive coach could turn this around in 2/3 years.

..after just two years.

He's looking good now, at least this year.

Not saying the Giants do that leap next year, but DG deserves a third year and a more competitive HC.

Rip it down after 2020 if the team doesn't make a jump.

I wanted the arrow pointing up in 2019 regardless of record and the team obviously isn't there.

I'm not leading the DG charge, but I think he needs another year.

Not as often as it should because it's not the standard way of running football operations in the NFL. The NFL has always fallen back on this infrastructure of Owner/GM/HC. Right?

Well, maybe that way of thinking is a relic. And it needs to change. It's not the perfect example, but a HC in the college ranks chooses his players, not the AD. Right?

So I'd prefer to have the coach pick the players to fit his scheme and who he wants to coach. And not worry about some superfluous guy being a firewall for the future...

Would take this with a dump truck of salt
