Per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, Nick Caserio is set to be a free agent, and he is expected to take full advantage of his freedom.

Volin adds Caserio is expected to listen to all offers. Mentions the Giants & Panthers as possible suitors.
Caserio is the Pats’ Director of Player Personnel, fyi

He’s held the job since 2008 and has worked for Belichick since 2001.

Interesting development.
We have a director of player personnel ...

Chris Mara :/
Very unusual resume
Go Terps : 12/9/2019 5:40 pm : link
Per his wikipedia:

Quote:
As coach:
Saginaw Valley State (1999–2000)
Graduate assistant
Central Michigan (2001)
Graduate assistant
New England Patriots (2002)
Offensive coaching assistant
New England Patriots (2007)
Wide receivers coach

As executive:
New England Patriots (2001)
Personnel assistant
New England Patriots (2003)
Area scout
New England Patriots (2004–2006)
Director of pro personnel
New England Patriots (2008–present)
Director of player personnel

Very interesting that he served as NE's director of pro personnel '04-'06, then moved to WR coach in '07, then back to director of player personnel in '08.

Especially interesting is that he "continued to assist the coaching staff from the press box during games along with football research director Ernie Adams."

This is a guy that knows where the bodies are buried with how the Pats do things.

Was a teammate of McDaniels

in college.

Baseless speculation, but I wonder if they're hoping to come to a team as a package.

Lynch and Shanahan pulled that in San Fran and have had a lot of success. FO and Coaches in lock step I'm sure is something Caserio has come to value in his time with NE.

I was thinking the same thing. A couple thoughts:

1. Mike Lombardi recently said John Mara fundamentally wants to hire Belichick to implement the Patriot program here, and that he should go after McDaniels. The fly in the ointment is Gettleman...McDaniels already turned the Giants down because he wasn't going to take the job with Gettleman in full GM power.

2. We know the Giants and Steelers ownership are close, and that the Steelers' long term success may help inform how Mara foresees turning this around. The Steelers have enjoyed incredible stability at GM and head coach, hiring young guys and giving them a lot of rope. Both Caserio and McDaniels are 43 years old.

It's all baseless speculation, but it beats talking about the current football team.
That is quite the development if true
Jay on the Island : 12/9/2019 5:59 pm : link
I believe NE blocked a team just last offseason from interviewing him. If he can be had the Giants would be very wise to go for him. I am hoping we see Gettleman "step down" as GM this offseason.

I am not a fan of McDaniels though.
According to PFT
Jay on the Island : 12/9/2019 6:04 pm : link
Steelers GM Kevin Colbert's contract runs through the 2020 NFL draft and then he is a FA barring a new deal.

Colbert's on a year-to-year contract with Pittsburgh because he apparently wants to retire soon. This was before all of the Carolina talk. Money talks so we will see what he ends up doing.
If its not Belichek
Giantz_comeback : 12/9/2019 6:23 pm : link
Don't want him. Dont give me McDaniels. What coordinator has succeeded as a HC that was part of Belicheks coaching tree? And McDaniels didnt exactly light it up his first go around in Denver.

Now if Caserio comes with Bill that's a different story. He gets a guy in Jones that may be able to run his system.

Just a question. When and where did Lombardi say that? I’d like to go read the article or listen to the podcast. Thanks!
To echo what Terps said..
Sean : 12/9/2019 6:38 pm : link
Lombardi has referenced multiple times the desire to implement the Patriot program with the Giants. This could be the opportunity.

Terps referenced the Steelers & I’ll reference the Niners. Both Shanahan & Lynch are young and seeing their vision through. I could see something similar with McDaniels & Caserio.

He refers to McDaniels spurning the Giants in his 12/6 "From the GM's Eye" article in The Athletic. I don't have the podcast dates for you; he's said it at least 3 times the last couple months.

Thanks. Looks like I need a subscription to The Athletic for Christmas. I don’t always agree with Lombardi but I think he provides an informed opinion.

It's worth the money. The soccer and hockey coverage are really good, too.

Contract Expires After 2020 Draft
MojoEd : 12/9/2019 6:55 pm : link
And reports from earlier this year had him joining the Texans until NE put the kibosh on it. Texans never filled the GM position. Fun to speculate, but the timing and mutual Texans interest don’t make this likely IMHO. Of course, we could cure the timing issue by trading draft picks. ;)
It's hard to really say how much of the Patriots success
Anakim : 12/9/2019 6:57 pm : link
personnel-wise is due to Caserio. It doesn't mean he's a bad executive, but let's face it, Belichick runs that team. The team is molded and crafted in his image. It could be that Caserio was simply along for the ride and was more of a back office guy than anything.

Look what happened to Scott Pioli.

Either way, I'm the future GM of the Giants :)
This is interesting..

From the same article:

Quote:
There is certainly a possibility of Caserio and McDaniels teaming up — the Panthers and Giants could be good options for that — but one source proffered that Caserio might pair up with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, the former Patriots assistant who is having an excellent season and is expected to be one of the top head coaching candidates this year.

Did not hear any buzz that Bill Belichick is ready to step down from the Patriots. “I think he would probably stay for one more year after [Tom] Brady,” one insider said. “I could easily see him, if he did leave, becoming a president of some other team or an executive VP or something like that.” Like the Giants? “Of course.”

right now is Will McClay of the Cowboys. The more I hear and read about this guy the more I am convinced that he is the backbone of their player evaluations. And the Cowboys have been absolutely brilliant at drafting with him in the mix.

I fear the Caserio may be another player in the Belichick world that is better with BB than without...

Mike Vrabel is doing a nice job in Tennessee. And people like to knock Bill O'Brien but he's had 1 losing season in 6 - the year Watson tore up his knee as a rookie. He went 9-7 three years in a row with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bobby Hoyer, and Brock Osweiler at QB.

I’d add that despite their bad record, Brian Flores has kept a Miami team devoid of talent playing hard, and they’ve shown improvement as the season has progressed.
