I am FIRMLY of the belief that our problem is coaching. We have physical talent. Not elite, but we’ve accumulated some good players to be in the 6-10, 7-9 realm. We also were winning last night — I would say dominating in the first half last night. Eagles adjusted. They won the game with no receivers? Swing passes, screens? How on earth did we give so much open space to a nobody like Boston Scott? How do we have a blown coverage against Ertz on the last play of the game?
I’m sorry, this is on Shurmur and Bettcher. They have to go.
I am not totally against Gettleman, but at the same time he’s almost 70, and players don’t like him, coaches don’t like him, we’re gonna have a hard time attracting talent in free agency with the stink around them both.
I would hire a new coach (Rhule), promise them input on roster decisions, and let gettleman run one more draft and cut the plug.
But I agree that this is a coaching issue. If you look at the Dolphins, they also gutted their team but have won a few games and the team looks competitive.
The team has talent. We've seen it. They just havent been able to put it together fast enough to translate into wins. Thats a coaching issue.
The Giants don't have a history of firing coaches quickly. But with guys like Ruhle available you have to consider it. At the very, very least, there should be a change in coordinators and maybe other position coaches.
On Offense there is no physical play of any kind. Barkley is a ballerina, if he doesn't break long one he is not doing much as he doesn't grind down the opposition front. The o line is a continued trajedy.
The poor decisions in game are the cherry on top. Shurmur and his staff have not improved any aspect of the team and he has bot done anything to build2 a culture of winning.
Shurmur is an abject failure.
And give Norv a real Center as his gift. Halapio is just fucking horrid. Reminds me of the mid-70s when they kept rotating in UDFAs at C.
Flea flicker call in the second half.
In this case, all three items mentioned above are working against this call.
1) Down and distance along with how Philly lined up their Defense says that this call isn't the right call and should not have been attempted. We had long yardage and because of long yardage the element of surprise, showing run only to have the Back pitch it back to the quarterback, is completely negated.
2) Our oline was getting beat regularly now and this type of play requires the element of surprise (see #1) and requires time for the play to start, get kicked back to the QB and the QB to then step into the throw, usually deeper down the field. It all centers on time and the elements needed for the time (surprise and good blocking) and those items were not in our favor momentum wise as we couldn't block at all on the outside...
3) Mentality wise this play, based on the previous two points screams of desperation. Trick plays or plays not often used are strategic in nature and used at a point where the opposition is not expecting it or to continue a momentum swing that will hopefully result in a score, big gain or continued drive and helping to keep the opposition completely befuddled on what is coming next. Our trick plays scream of desperation and this one specifically. There was nothing about this drive or our offense at the time that said this is a good call for the down, distance and moment of the game. In fact, this seemed more like PS's challenges to PI or possible turnovers all season, desperate attempts to change what he knows is ultimately coming. There is nothing about how he coaches or presents himself that says confidence and this play was nothing more than OMG we have to do something, even if it stands no chance of working and in reality gave even more momentum, more positive thoughts to the Eagles that we knew we were cooked!
