Once we get a good coaching staff in here, it seems that we do have some talent on the young defense. Lawrence, Baker, Beal, and Love all flashed last night, save for the one bad play by Beal. What strikes me about Beal is he actually has the look and feel of a confident NFL CB out there. He should be starting with Baker the rest of the way with Jenkins in the slot. Get these guys some more experience. Baker has been very inconsistent but has been improving as of late, with a new coaching staff he could really flourish.
If we don't have to empty the truck for Williams, he should be re-signed. With him and Lawrence up front, hopefully a pass rusher in the draft, we can focus on LB in free agency/mid rounds to improve that area.
We certainly have needs all over, but the first half last night (and parts of the second half quite frankly) gave us a glimpse of what this young D could be next year and beyond.
I can't remember a time when so many rookies were starting and getting major reps. Add Jones and Slayton and even Connelly to that list.
I like many of our young players. I am hoping we can add some play makers in 2020. It might make enough of a difference.
The defense was on the field for the entire second half. Beal played well before the one bad holding play where he got beat/got still caught it.
Not really, no. The Eagles were playing waiver wire guys at RB and WR and lost Lane Johnson during the game.

you didn't think the young guys on defense played well for most of the game?

But wait, there's more. Slayton totally disappeared in the second half and dropped a first down throw (will PFF count that as a "drop") that hit him in the hands. But he's a rookie so I give him a pass. Tate, our "#1 receiver" and a star in the Dave G free agent firmament disappeared the entire game. Compounding the lack of speed and talent are the comedy stylings of our HC as expressed through his playcalling.
This is an awful team, well deserving of its 2-9 record (thank you Tampa), and Shurmur and Gettleman should both be shown the door.
Chase Young
Dexter Lawrence
Dalvin Tomlinson
Leonard Williams
Ryan Connelly
DeAndre Baker
Sam Beal
Julian Love
It can't be emphasized enough how awful Shurmur and Bettcher are. Not defending Gettleman at all - he had a hand in hiring these morons - but it's fair to say a better coach could make something of that group.
