I keep seeing all these threads about who we are going to sign in FA and killing DG for the LW trade. Newsflash most teams are in good enough cap shape to resigm their own. Thata why their was a trade market for LW to begin with. Jalen Ramsey just got traded tanking Yannicks chances of hitting market. Castonzo is resigning unless he demands a long term deal which he may, so we ready to sign a 31 year old LT to a five year deal. Some of you live in fantasy land.
So you have an absurd spending spree in the first 24-48 hours, a pause, and then another rush for guys with significant warts.
Sometimes you get more lucky when a team cuts a player (i.e., Antrel Rolle).
You get good players when you have the chance or you dont get them.
It's not about a quick fix it's about getting good players in the building. At some point that needs to happen.
Banking on 3 grand slam drafts and than resigning them all when the time comes is not a reasonable strategy.
You need to do well in both the draft and FA. 1st round picks and big contract FAs can both bust, and both are equally damaging.
Not taking plays off like he did with the Texans. He is also a very vocal leader on the field. Holding guys accountable.
Draft Young, Sign Clowney, Resign Williams and you are talking about a 4-3 DL that could be absolutely dominant.
And just for the record, Williams is a 4-3 DT not a 3-4 DE
As many as 7 teams who will be in the playoffs this year have more spending power than the Giants.
The notion the Giants, a potential 2-14 team, with a brand new coach, and average spending power, are going to walk into UFA, and re-mkae this team is ridiculous.
This fantasy continues to persist. Befuddling. Maybe he's just Joshin'.

These guys mostly follow the money in FA. If we loved LW so much we could have signed him without giving up two mid round draft picks.

You disagree?

Lol this guy shows up when he wants to get paid. Exactly what we need! DeMarcus Lawrence is a similar story, ask Cowboys fans how they feel about him.
They could at least buy a round for the house for having to watch this crap!!!
Maybe we can trade a few picks for him so that we can tag him.
$100M?
I guess "giant power" doesn't include things like "look something up on the internet"
Well with their 60M in cap space they can either 1) spend it 2) cut a bunch of players to get anywhere near 100M and compete with much better teams for a few players. But then, ya know, pray to chicken bones they can replace everyone they cut?

Bingo. And of the top guys, usually at least a few come from a team that amplified their skills (like NE re: Trent Brown, Nate Solder, and Trey Flowers) who don't really live up to the difference maker price tag.
I think we'd be well served going forward to try to stick to mostly inflated AAV short term deals and a few mid-tier signings like Golden Tate who can help fill holes for a few seasons. Obviously the younger the better.
Maybe once or twice a year you can roll the dice on a multi-year deal for a young ascending player (like Preston Smith or Zadarius Smith last year), but those kinds of breakouts are rare. LW fits that bill this year, which is why I'd seize the opportunity to keep him on a 1 year deal even if the AAV is slightly inflated.
1) Sell their cap space for draft picks - Like how the Browns got a 2nd round pick for absorbing Brock Osweiller's $17m a year contract.
2) Creative contract structuring - Let's say Clowney hits the FA market and we want to sign him. He'll cost about $100m over 5 years. We could pay him $50m in Year 1 and $12.5m a year afterwards.
How about you fire up that dial-up modem and map out a path to $100M in cap space for 2020?

I wouldn't bother working toward a plan for $100M in cap space. It's not what the Giants have, and it's not what the Giants CAN have. It's a complete error by that poster who doesn't know a salary cap from a baseball cap.
