I’m surprised by the seemingly surprised reaction from the fans on this board after a loss. The team is what it is. It’s frankly boring rehashing the same tired storylines after each loss. We get it, Shurmur stinks.
Let’s look at some of the things trending in a positive direction.
1) The 2019 rookie class had a great game last night even with Jones off the field. Slatyon and Xman both played big time games. 5/150/2tds for Slayton and 2 sacks for the xman after being quiet for a few weeks. Dexter showed up on quite a few plays including a stop on 3rd and 1. Baker probably played his best game and Julian Love is flashing. Love missed a few tackles but they seemed like overzealous rookie plays. He seems like a heady player who could fill our FS role next year. Add in Jones and Connelly and this is a draft that is going to produce quite a few starters and some solid rotation players.
2) Dalvin Tomlinson has been a beast since the Leonard Williams trade. I know Sy has pointed this out quite a few times in his game reviews but it showed up last night too. In fact, our interior DLine rotation next year will be very strong. Dexter, Williams, Tomlinson and Hill is a good rotation that can stay fresh. These guys will only be better if we get the added bonus of more consistent edge rushing (chase young).
3) Markus Golden was an absolute find. He’s not a great player by any stretch but at 26 years old he’s a guy we can probably resign to a value contract. 3/33 million, something in that range. Golden plays his ass off and is a good character guy. IF we can land Young,. Put Golden opposite of him and get continued improvement from the Xman we have a solid pass rush rotation combined with interior depth.

Nice i’ve Been trying to find Sy on twitter.
I get everyone’s upset but i’ve Been over it for weeks. There are good things happening on the field.
Great input.
Then look at the body of FA/Trades/Coaching Selection - DG has been closer to failure than savior.

You’re not supposed to find 3 plus starter in every draft. Thats false. I think we can safely say that Dexter and Slayton are future NFL starters. Jones obviously has a chance. Love and Baker as well. Xman perhaps a rotational pass rusher. If you had that every draft you’d be the best team in the NFL.

TDM, I think its great to have some optimism, and I mean that. Thank you for bringing it up. But it does not always translate to wins. We have seen improvement in the secondary, the DL, Danny Jones but no such improvement has helped us win games. They WILL translate to wins next year and beyond with the right coaches and the right play calling which we don't have today. Have a good day.
Our punt coverage has been outstanding all year. Hard to care in such a los year but that’s true. Core has been outstanding as a gunner.
Young
Lawrence
Tomlinson
Williams (even if overpaid)
Connelly (not special, but a massive upgrade over current LBs)
That has the makings of a good front seven, should things unfold that way.
That's true. But it was also clearly his best game. First time he looked like a legit NFL CB. Still plays patty cake too much when attempting to "tackle" guys coming straight at him. But his coverage was good.
Beal also demonstrates a natural ability to stick with his man. Yes, some stupid penalties. But those are "rookie" mistakes.
As a converted CB, tackling is not Love's strong point. Probably never will be. But he was all over the place last night. He just barely missed making some plays that would have changed the outcome.
Ximenes also flashed. This was definitely the best showing by far for the young defensive players. If Eli had gained more than two first downs in the second half and given the D some rest, they would have won the game
I’ve said multiple times the DL is a damn near finished product. Young plus a FA edge will seal the deal.
We’re seeing potential from guys in the secondary.
Jones, Barkley, and the skill guys are talented.
Find a good coach. Fix the OL. Finish the job on the DL. Find some competent LBs. That should be the plan this off-season.

GMs are supposed to find starters in the draft. Finding them doesn't make you great, it means you're doing your job. And for all the draft capital we've had in '18/'19 - it's been an average job.

Fans think we should get 5 starters per draft. The average is probably 2 starters per draft.
If I were to list who I personally feel are DEFINITE, core, keepers from the current roster, it's the guys below. An * denotes too early to give up on them.
Leonard Williams
Dalvin Tomlinson
Dexter Lawrence
(DT is the strength of the team. But IMO, these guys will start looking much better with some edge rushers other teams have to worry about or double team).
Markus Golden
Lorenzo Carter*
Oshane Ximines*
(Adding a stud pass rusher here would make all of these guys more effective)
Deandre Baker*
Corey Ballentine*
Sam Beal*
J. Peppers*
Julian Love*
(This is the big ? How many of these guys turn into solid starters or more?)
W. Hernandez
K. Zeitler
N. Gates*
one of the OCs for backup.
OL still needs huge upgrade
D. Slayton
G. Tate
S. Sheppard
Barkley
Gallman
Jones
Rojas*
Dixon
That's 23 guys -- less than half a roster. But those guys are mostly ALL young, with their best days in front of them. The only ones on that list Gettleman did NOT acquire are Gallman, Sheppard, and Tomlinson. That's the "young core." And IMO, it has promise.
Hopefully this offseason adds either Chase Young or a stud OT with the high pick, and more young Edge, D back 7 and OL talent.
This is a REBUILD. It's always BEEN a REBUILD. Regardless of what the management says. And it's not finished.
Nice find....Core is a beast and I hope we lock him up for several more years. It’s nice to trust your ST players now.
