NFT: Knicks/ Ujiri talk

TyreeHelmet : 12/10/2019 10:59 am
Good article below from Grange- a reporter for Rogers Sportsnet in Toronto. Good info on Ujiri's contract and situation with Toronto.

I understand this is the Durant rumors all over again but for a GM, but it at least can give you some hope theres a chance he would come.

Masai - ( New Window )
ujiri....

would have to be out of his mind to come to this cluster fuck of an organization. I mean maybe he just relishes the challenge of fixing the worst organization in sports. I mean if Dolan tells him "the team is yours, i wont get in the way" who would actually believe him.
Hope is nothing but a cruel fantasy

for the Dolan/Ujiri interview - Ujiri has ALL the leverage. Any dollar amount he wants, plus total control. If Dolan so much as frowns at him wanting to fire Mills, tweak the medical staff, change the wax they use on the hardwood floor - he returns to Toronto and spends the rest of his career as a king up there.
Maybe Dolan is so enamored with him
nygiants16 : 12/10/2019 11:11 am : link
he treats him like glen sather and basically says do what you want..

The job is really desirable if dolan steps away and lets the person do his job, problem is is dolan going to step away..

That can all be negotiated and agreed upon before hand prior to taking the job. Have it written in stone in the contract and give him an out if it is not honored. And if you are Dolan- do you have a choice at that point but to agree?

How about these resumes for comparison?

Masai-"career winning percentage as a general manager or president in your 10th year with two franchises is .651 – a 53-win pace – and your teams have made the playoffs every year on your watch. 1 title with no lottery picks on the roster- first time ever in the NBA's history."

Scott Perry- hasn't been a member of a winning organization in 13 years. Just a reminder, the Knicks gave up a 2nd round pick to hire this assistant GM from the Kings.

Steve Mills- 167 wins and 349 losses to date. This will be his 6th straight season of 50 losses and he's never made the playoffs once with the Knicks.

This is where I am with all this stuff. Time is a flat circle. The Knicks will always be bad.

there's basically zero downside for Masai or any other highly regarded exec to take the job. If you fail, you can just blame the owner.
Until Mills is fired

it is business as usual, i expect the kevin love trade to be annpunced as soon as the contracts can be traded..

then derozan a couple of days after that..

mitch in the love trade, barrett in the derozan trade..
If he was really allowed to do what he wanted with no Dolan
moespree : 12/10/2019 11:31 am : link
I am confident he would turn the team around. Who knows if he'd ever win a title but I am confident he'd get them back to being a playoff team more years than not. He knows what he is doing and knows how to navigate the modern NBA.

But the IF is a big if. I have no idea if Dolan would be able to contain himself and leave him alone. I suspect not.

It's what he did for Phil Jackson, so that's something. Pretty sure everyone agrees Phil was allowed to do everything he wanted until it was obvious he was a complete buffoon.
Should do a lyrics search for JD and The Straight Shot

and see if you get any hits for the city of Toronto.

Well the things that makes this incarnation of the Knicks
Stu11 : 12/10/2019 11:42 am : link
dumpster fire different than the past is that we have:
#1. a few young guys with real upside in Mitch and RJ
#2 roster flexibility cap wise.
#3 all our #1 picks and then some going forward

we don't have those albatross contracts we always have like Eddie Curry or Stat. The worst one is Randle and that one is only this year and next

So while we are the Knicks and we are a total joke, if we can lure some smart roster builder in here they can turn things around relatively quickly if left alone especially with another top 5 pick coming next draft.

Its unclear if this is because Phil didn't want to or wasn't allowed, but Jackson didn't revamp the front office. In fact he only hired one person- Gaines, and the rest of the front office was unchanged. I do think this was more that Phil didn't know how to build out a front office or want to put the effort in to do it.

But Griffin also wanted full control of the front office and to fire Mills and was denied...
My guess is he uses the Knicks to get a raise

The answer is so freaking simple...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 12/10/2019 12:22 pm : link
Dolan needs to hand over the keys to Uriji/Morey/Presti/whoever is an competent NBA mind & GTFO of sight out of mind. Tour the country with JD & The Straight Shot. Just get the F out of basketball. Don't meddle
I'm guessing Phil was told to keep Houston/Mills
bceagle05 : 12/10/2019 12:45 pm : link
upon getting that fat paycheck from Dolan. No chance any team president - even one as incompetent as Phil - would come upon this dumpster fire and decide the incumbent GM and assistant GM deserved to stay. There were also reports that Phil wanted to make changes to the medical/training staff and Dolan vetoed it. Autonomy is a big word, and shouldn't be applied to anyone working under Dolan, at least in the basketball operations. Ujiri seems like a guy who could actually change that, but he needs to put an out-clause in his contract should Dolan stick his beak in.
Phil Jackson
arniefez : 12/10/2019 2:08 pm : link
was told he could do whatever he wanted and then he signed the contract and couldn't change anything but the roster. He couldn't even sign the coach he wanted. Couldn't get rid of Mills or the scouts, couldn't change the doctors. If he had to do it all over again he'd probably still take the 60 million. Who wouldn't?

I mean that he may not need the Knicks or any singular team, but he can and will use them all to get the best deal he can get. I'm not deluded enough to think the Knicks job is anything special other than an ungodly check written by possibly the biggest douchebag in sports ownership, but the media fueling this as Durant part II plus that ungodly amount will be part of the leverage equation regardless of the nonexistent reality that he'd want to come here. The media will undoubtedly make it seem like it's close at the 11th hour and the Knicks will wind up with egg on their faces.

frank cant be the starting point guard

he can not create for shit, literally just stands on the perimiter and gives it to randle or morris..

and of course he cant shoot
knox, dotson, and smith
nygiants16 : 12/10/2019 11:42 pm : link
may be 3 of the dumbest players i have ver seen, they have no feel for the game..

I have never seen a team so many times have games where they completelt cant shoot...
Barrett and Robinson are the only actual building blocks they have
Greg from LI : 12/10/2019 11:44 pm : link
And neither of them are exactly all NBA material. Sad state of affairs.
I really thought this team
nygiants16 : 12/10/2019 11:48 pm : link
would at least fight this year but they cant shoot, as soon as the other team gets hot they are fucked..

this is last years lakers team without lebron

are just lazy
At least they have a lot of draft picks coming up
steve in ky : 12/10/2019 11:53 pm : link
in the next few years. If they don't trade them away and can hit on a couple of them there could be a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
Put shooters and a point guard
nygiants16 : 12/11/2019 12:02 am : link
around barrett and mitch and you would have a conpetitive team..

shit adding a point guard who can shoot and distribute would help this team trmendously..

i would like to see payton and mitch with the starters
Well the coaching change enthusiasm didn't last long
steve in ky : 12/11/2019 12:20 am : link
This game was brutal to watch
I've run out of ways to complain about the shooting.
bceagle05 : 12/11/2019 12:26 am : link
Can't win unless the ball goes through the hoop. Our guys can't throw it in the ocean. None of our young pieces can shoot.
Another game another blowout
moespree : 12/11/2019 1:14 am : link
They're on pace to have 20+ games where they lose by 25 points or more. That's difficult to do even if you were trying. There are some teams in the league will go the next 10 years without losing 20+ games by 25 or more. These guys will do it by March.
In my opinion
nygiants16 : 12/11/2019 8:51 am : link
Mills has already been fired, i know the Knicks do everything ass backwards but even when they fired hornacek Mills and Perry spoke to the media and had quotes in the statement..

There has been nothing from Mills and Perry, The Knicks wont announce it but i think Mills has been fired as well..

FWIW, Marc Stein said that Phil wanted to fire Mills and overhaul the medical staff, but was overruled on both by Dolan. He was also alleged to have planned to visit KP in Latvia to iron things out when he was fired.
