Shurmur's staff

Platos : 12/10/2019 1:04 pm
anyone notice how his staff is basically a bunch of randoms from around the league as well as some guys that were here in the mcadoo era? Did no one want to come coach with him? DG brought in Shula out of no where. they picked bettcher with no prior experience working with him.

the guys been coaching for 30+ years and has no peers in the game. Not one guy worked with him before except Mcgovern I think... and that might've been from the defensive side of the ball in Minnesota.

The OL Coach

What I find very surprising here is that Shurmur, as a former star center and OL coach, would hire a OL coach who clearly did not have great credentials and has not made the line better in any way. I’m assuming Hunter was Shurmur’s choice. Maybe the GM hired him.

On a egg her, he came with a great reputation. In fact, people here were talking that he would be so successful that he’d get a HC quickly and would have to be replaced. He has a hard job here coaching a line that doesn’t pass rush , inside LBs who cannot cover and a young secondary that doesn’t know its assignments. I’m not sure who would succeed under those circumstances but I wonder if Bettcher could have adjusted his style to better accommodate the weaknesses.

I don't think Bettcher can accommodate Daylight Savings Time.
good point and just goes to show

how clueless and inept the giants are for hiring him. i have to believe that almost anyone else would have been a better selection.

mcadoo was younger and didn't have prior head coaching experience, flopped in his second year, so mara wanted someone with prior HC experience, regardless of anything else.

just sad how absolutely terrible mara is at running his football team. every single decision he's made since 2013 has been wrong.
I've made comments about this in other threads

It struck me as odd that someone who has been around the league as long as Shurmur didn't have connections where he could build his own staff. Once the Vikings blocked Stefanski, he clearly had no other options to go to, which lead to Gettleman bringing in Shula for him. No position coaches came with him or anything.

The same went for the defensive side of the ball where Bettcher was clearly a hire of the front office, because he had no prior relationship with Shurmur.

It's not really surprising when you consider that Pat Shurmur is a bad head coach with bad credentials. Losers hire losers. This was a knock of Shurmur is Cleveland too, that he buddied up with his assistants instead of demanding excellence.
I agree that the results don't look great, but I also raise a minority

opinion -- voiced by others at the time -- that NY may not be considered the dream destination that many BBIers feel it is. The area is expensive, and many good coaches and their families may prefer a less high-pressure environment unless the GM and head coach are clear top-shelf proven talents.
i think Shurmur is in charge of who gets picked. the GM

may have had made recommendations(Shula). ultimately Shurmur picks.

Hal Hunter being here 2 years is unacceptable. you know what you have in him. why is he still here after year 1?

bettcher, another guy who i don't think brought anyone under him.

i don't buy this. maybe with older more established guys. otherwise new york is the most famous city in the entire world.
This to me was the first red flag...

I was hopeful that he would be a good coach, but the assembly of the coaching staff was extremely unimpressive imo.
Bettcher and Hunter
Samiam : 12/10/2019 4:17 pm : link
Nobody had a problem when he was hired. He was considering one of the better DCs and not that far from getting a HC job.

Hunter is a totally different story. Everybody questioned his qualifications given his record and that he was out coaching for a year

bettcher honestly didn't bother me. young DC with some success in AZ under todd bowles and on his own... obviously he did himself no favors by trying to create the Cards without Chandler/patrick peterson/honeyBadger lol.

but hal hunter... i mean wtf? we've had OLine issues for YEARS and this is the guy you bring in? why not just not hire a guy at all!
Question
TheShade : 12/10/2019 11:14 pm : link
Wasn't Shurmur a late hire during the coaching carousel 2 years ago? If I recall he was the last one hired, so he was basically hiring whoever was left over. He's still responsible for who he hired though, which was some pretty crappy choices.
