I guarantee the Yanks offer is plenty, plus I am certain if he really wants to be here and he wanted a little more, they would go further, the entire thing is if he is using the Yanks or not and if he does not sign, don't blame the Yanks. It just means he never wanted to be here and that they can not control. But if they are used by Boras, that is something that will burn them. He cried for the Yanks to get involved, he said Cole was a perfect fit. We will see if he is a liar.

To come out with a first offer just under $300M is aggressive enough for me. Boras is gonna push for $300+ and I have to figure they'll be willing to go there given the initial offer.

That would be the absolute disaster scenario for Yankees. They lose out and Cole and he returns to the Astros.
I think even if they lose Cole to anyone other than the Astros the Yankees would be pretty strong favorites to with the AL this year. But if Cole returns to the Stros they would be the heave favorites to reign in the AL once again :(.

I would not blame the Yanks if they walk away when bids get above $300m. The bids may never get beyond that point but the risk of injury for starters is real and the money is getting crazy. Having said this, hope he's a Yank soon.

Gerrit Cole sweepstakes appear to be heading toward the finish line. Dodgers, Yankees, Angels believed to be the leaders still. Would be major upset if he lands elsewhere.
I wouldn't waste their money on Madbum. That is a long step down. Would probably better with Keuchel.

What is the deal with Ryu? He had a monster year last year.
Ryu is excellent but has a scary injury history. Missed all of 2015 and almost all of 2016, was limited to 15 starts in 2018.

There is no award for the sports most prudent General Manager.
Honestly, within their means, spending more is as prudent as the Pirates on a percentage basis.
Listing the risks, as true as they are, is obvious, but misses the point. The point is to win. And to do so within a teams long term means.
Spending more is not imprudent of and by itself. Spending less or more than your operating model and cash flow is actual risk
