If Giants have their choice, Young vs Thomas...

Ben in Tampa : 12/10/2019 4:16 pm
Let’s assume the Giants pick 2nd and the Bengals select Burrow with the #1 pick.

The general consensus has been the “race for Chase” and that Young is the best overall player in the draft. An even better player than Nick Bosa who could come in and be an immediate transformational player for the Giants.

Young is particularly attractive because the Giants defense has been comically terrible for several years. The counter point to that is that the offensive line has been just as putrid for a decade. Nate Solder, when considering contract and performance, may be one of the worst free agent signings in NFL history.

Georgia's Andrew Thomas looks to a complete prospect: big, strong, an agile pass protector and a powerful run blocker.

You could argue left tackle is as premium of a position in the NFL as a pass rusher, however the Giants faithful has been more enamored with Young than Thomas.

So if the Giants have there choice, would it make more sense to draft a left tackle that could protect Daniel Jones for a decade? Or is the right move to go with Chase and try to build the defense around a dominant young superstar?
Don't worry
PaulN : 12/10/2019 4:19 pm : link
They will fuck up that too. They fucked up with Barkley, and maybe with Jones, what is the fucking difference now, they will pick wrong as long as Gettleman is picking, he fuck up already twice probably, you want him to swing and miss again?
Chase Young
eric2425ny : 12/10/2019 4:20 pm : link
If they can rush the QB again they may actually close out some of these games.
We're going to have the #2 pick
Csonka : 12/10/2019 4:20 pm : link
and the Bengals will make us believe they're trading #1 to a team that wants Chase. So we'll trade up to #1 giving up our 2nd rounder.
passing on Young
ryanmkeane : 12/10/2019 4:22 pm : link
would be malpractice, unless there's an equal grade on a LT, or they get a massive haul from someone

This.
Either player

will be a fine addition to the team that has numerous needs.

How was the Barkley pick bad? The guy has been playing with a high ankle sprain all year, he probably should even be out there. Jones to me looks better than Darnold and he’s a year younger. Gettleman’s drafts have been light years better than the crap Reese was putting together. I mean look at his 5th rounders this year. Slayton looks like a steal as does Connelly who unfortunately got hurt.
I don’t think that Thomas is a sure thing.
yatqb : 12/10/2019 4:22 pm : link
He’s not as athletic and nimble as the top LTs imo.
Both are important positions and the Giants have huge needs for both
Jim in Forest Hills : 12/10/2019 4:23 pm : link
Who is the better player? If its Young take him, don't look back.
Pass rusher
allstarjim : 12/10/2019 4:23 pm : link
LT is important, but a game-wrecker like Young is more important than one position on the OL.

Hopefully there will be a good LT at the top of the 2nd. But either way I'd take Young.

However, as I've stated, they will have to listen to the offers to move up. A truly impressive draft and/or player haul also has to be considered. But at 2, if we stay at 2, there is no question who the pick should be, no wiggle room at all for anyone else to enter that conversation.
Go with the best player available
Anakim : 12/10/2019 4:24 pm : link
Which in this case would be Young
No Thomas
richinpa : 12/10/2019 4:25 pm : link

Not a fan after watching 3 games now latter part of the season

Maybe not the best sample set but I think there is a wide gap in picking one of those 2 in terms of impact

Thomas to me isnt' the best LT and to be drafted that high..it would need to be a lock which he is not

Go young or go home. Or like some idiots like the talking heads are saying...pick a QB :-)

I would also trade down if we get a call about another club falling in love with a QB

We need too many spots to not go after more 1st and 2nd draft capital

Thats if DG is not our GM
Thomas =Flowers?
5BowlsSoon : 12/10/2019 4:26 pm : link
I’m concerned this might be the case.
I don't think Thomas is a blue chip
JonC : 12/10/2019 4:26 pm : link
Don't over think it, take Young.
Csonk
PaulN : 12/10/2019 4:26 pm : link
Got it, and give up our second round pick, so we will have the second pick and lose our 2nd and 3rd rounders, that is how bad Gettleman is, and he will sign Williams to an absurd contract to save face, you hear already Williams wanting to get paid big money, that is all because this fucking fool of a GM gave up a 3rd and 5th for him, he did that to win a couple more games to try and save face, particularly the Jets, and we have not won one, and got beat by the Jets. That was the move that sealed it for me about Gettleman, he is a fucking idiot.

I would then choose Burrows and trade that pick (like the Eli for Rivers trade) and make sure Bengals don’t get Burrows!

No ifs, ands, or buts. You draft that kid. You won't go wrong. A great piece to build around. Case closed

LMFAO. no shot this happens. you guys are paranoid as hell. we stay at #2 and take young, if he goes #1 and we cant find a partner to trade, then we take wirfs or thomas.
Young
Archer : 12/10/2019 4:30 pm : link
Young does something unique he applies constant pressure
He is double teamed yet he cannot be stopped

Conversely, I doubt that Thomas will be the first tackle taken
Wirf and Jackson may be better left tackles

I prefer also Simmons, and Esperanza to Thomas
Thomas
WillVAB : 12/10/2019 4:31 pm : link
Is the most likely bust in the top 10 if he’s drafted that high. Not a fan of his game.

Take Young and don’t look back. If he’s gone trade down.

I would not trade down and miss out on Young. He’s the kind of prospect that a team would trade multiple 1’s for after a few years in the league.
And if Yount goes number 1 and we are picking 2 then we get an insane
robbieballs2003 : 12/10/2019 4:32 pm : link
haul for Burrow.
If we get the #2 pick, it's really not that difficult
Anakim : 12/10/2019 4:33 pm : link
No need to overthink it.

If Young is there, take him. If Young is taken #1, trade down to a team that wants Burrow and get a king's ransom.
If the players were equal, I'd go for the left tackle over the pass
Ira : 12/10/2019 4:34 pm : link
rusher, but it looks like Young is significantly better.
we've been waiting for a pass rusher
ryanmkeane : 12/10/2019 4:34 pm : link
for about 5 seasons now. To pass on Young would be so brutal. again UNLESS a team gives us 3 1sts or something like that
if we have a new GM
ryanmkeane : 12/10/2019 4:35 pm : link
i could see a scenario where they evaluate the roster and realize we need basically everything, and then we trade down for a great haul, similar to what Ballard did with Colts

They won't get away with that because Burrow is too hot a commodity. If they trade down they'll lose him.
Wirfs is better than Thomas IMO.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 12/10/2019 4:40 pm : link
But Young is ahead of both of them and everyone else.
Young is the more special and rarer
Giantz_comeback : 12/10/2019 4:41 pm : link
player of the 2. He is a perennial pro-bowl type. Even a better prospect than Josh Allen, or the Bosas.

Either get the OT in FA or high in the 2nd round.

how's that working for them? Their roster has greatly improved. They made the playoffs in 2018, won the wildcard game and then lost to the Chiefs. They have been in the hunt all year even after Luck retired. You could argue it was even smarter for them to do it, considering Luck retired. They made their roster better.
Ideal draft is Young and Biadasz (badass)
markky : 12/10/2019 4:48 pm : link
that would be a haul in one draft.
You draft Chase Young
Rjanyg : 12/10/2019 4:48 pm : link
No question. We need to find a great edge guy even if Golden is somehow re-signed. Pressure from the edges and middle is what we need.
The question is
Bones : 12/10/2019 4:50 pm : link
Who will we take if it turns out Young is a severe behavior/maturity basket case, or we end up beating Miami and Washington (which I think we might), and end up picking third or fourth?

But they’re in qb hell and won’t ever get a good enough draft pick to fix it. The amount of competition for qb’s for the next 3 years will be at an all time high with Eli, Ben, and rivers phasing out. Hopefully they get lucky with a Jacob Eason/Jalen Hurts type later in the draft

I would be comfortable drafting Wirfs third overall, to me, he’s that good and will get even better.

Don't worry, once Shurmur and Bettcher get through coaching Young up,he'll forget how to play like the rest of our players.

Wouldn't we trade out of 2 at that point to a team that wants the QB that Cinci wants?
Take Chase Young if they an get him
David B. : 12/10/2019 5:39 pm : link
Don't get cute. If he's there at 2, just grab him and run.

If the Bengals try and fool them to trade up, call their bluff. They either take the QB and the Giants take Young anyway, or the Bengals take Young, and the Giants take bids for the QB and get a boatload of picks.

Sign Yannick in FA
Diver_Down : 12/10/2019 5:45 pm : link
and draft Young. Game wreckers.
LT is more important
Coach Red Beaulieu : 12/10/2019 6:49 pm : link
You need a unicorn for that position and dovetails with SB and DJ8, and DG can dig up a Golden off the scrap heap for a 3-4.

Having said that, if there's no Ogden level LT, take the gamewrecker.

Precisely. I think he's good, but overrated. I'd say there are at least 3 LTs in this draft who are more promising.

If that does happen, we'll have plenty of offers from teams who want their QB
If #2
Reale01 : 12/11/2019 9:09 am : link
If QB goes #1
Take Chase Young or trade pick for someone who wants Young.

If Young goes #1
Then trade the pick to someone who wants Burrows (Miami?).

Should get either Young or a good haul either way.

I'm s big a proponent of building the OL here as anyone
cosmicj : 12/11/2019 9:15 am : link
but anytime you have the chance to take the best defensive prospect in the last 2-3 years and he plays a critical position of need, you need to grab him and not look back.

Left unsaid but not needed to be said:

Unless his legs fall off between now and the draft, you take Young wherever you can grab him.
