How Did Beal Play?

Samiam : 12/10/2019 4:57 pm
I saw him a few times but couldn’t tell how much he played or how well he did. Can someone clarify?
my guess is, like a Giant
santacruzom : 12/10/2019 5:04 pm : link
i.e. not very well
I never had high hopes even beyond the injuries but he impressed me
Eric on Li : 12/10/2019 5:05 pm : link
he looked more athletic than Baker and was active. I thought his college hype was a lot of hyperbole based off a random pro day because he didn't have a ton of production but he may have a chance.

Love also showed athleticism and was active. He made a really nice play spying Wentz at one point and had the speed to track him down across the field and hold him to a minimal gain on what looked like an easy 5-10 scramble.
Love looked decent
Greg from LI : 12/10/2019 5:09 pm : link
Beal, not so much.
Think Deandre baker in his first game
aGiantGuy : 12/10/2019 5:09 pm : link
He has some obvious physical traits and he didn’t look out of place. But there weren’t any viable receivers challenging him and there were still mistakes
Wasn’t he
Bones : 12/10/2019 5:09 pm : link
The one that had two big penalties during Philly’s last scoring drive in regulation. Terrible penalties, but he seemed like he was staying with his man on a consistent basis.

Eagles threw at him a lot, which is not surprising. It's a long jump from Western Michigan to the NFL, and this is his first football of any kind in two years.
Let's put it this way
David B. : 12/10/2019 5:13 pm : link
EVERYONE watching the game knew the final pass was going to Ertz. Everyone BUT the Giants defenders. And that includes Beal.

Ertz was so open you'd have thought he had B.O.
Baker's first game he got burned for like 3 obvious PIs and 2 deep TDs
Eric on Li : 12/10/2019 5:15 pm : link
admittedly that's the lowest bar possible but Beal definitely exceed that.

The 1 PI call I saw looked a little ticky tack and the guy made the catch anyway. A few times they threw his way and he had good coverage without interfering.

He looked more athletic than I expected. I'd compare his debut more to Ballentine's than Bakers. Some typical rookie mistakes but also some flashes.
Let's just say when we're drafting Chase Young at 2...
Tesla : 12/10/2019 5:19 pm : link
that we should remember to thank Beal while we're up at the podium.
Beal looked solid in the first three quarters, IMO

And then the wheels fell off
Beal looks the part out there
ryanmkeane : 12/10/2019 5:23 pm : link
he looked like a 3rd round rookie CB though. He should start the rest of the season to see if he can be a big piece for us next year

ryanmkeane : 12/10/2019 5:24 pm : link
Baker had a great game, albeit against nobody. Looking forward to watching him these last 3 games.
Beal had two bad penalties
section125 : 12/10/2019 5:30 pm : link
one for PI and one for holding. He had his man covered well both time it seemed to me and did not need to do either. Like was said, he looks a smaller school 3rd round draft pick in his 1st year on the field.

I may be wrong but I think the DBs are going to be fine as long as they keep playing.

I really liked Love last night, very aggressive. Maybe too aggressive as he flew by the man he was looking to tackle. He looks very confident out there and looks very quick.

Love was good. Off-season training will help him. He looks like he has upside.

Out there with Jenkins and Baker

Beal as the weak link was targeted......keep moving, nothing to see here.
Beal is 13 games into the season
Frank from CA : 12/10/2019 5:49 pm : link
and ruined his teammates fine performance one two drives. The bad penalties were on one drive where the DL got the job done, yet, the secondary did not. His mistakes catapulted the Eagles to victory. He is a liability as he couldn't even cover a scrub WR. We are almost done the season and he is still not ready to make plays. Baker whiffed on tackling and allowed more YAC than necessary on one play if not more. Again the Giants are deep into the season and these guys look like they a place holder. Any UDFA can mug WRs and get called for holding or PI. On top of that their tackling is not requisite for the NFL. I am looking forward to a legitimate GM and scouts to get some prospects that can play. I can't see people being enthusiastic about these players being Giants.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Baker was playing pretty well even when he covered Alshon. In fact, on one of his pass breakups he closed so fast on the ball that if he had realized how quick he got there and looked back, it would’ve been a pick six. He was our best corner last night. Not every corner is going to be Marcus Peters or Jaire Alexander right out the gate. Most will be more like Xavier Rhodes or Malcolm Butler, taking time to develop their games.
Baker still seems to be too close to taking penalties all the time
Eric on Li : 12/10/2019 6:24 pm : link
it's definitely possible he improves and he seems to have solid instincts, I just don't know if he's athletic enough to be in good position.

For all these guys the jury is going to be out for a while. We should remember that Webster looked like a bust for 3 years, and then went on to be as reliable of a CB as we've had here for probably close to 5 years or so. It is a position that takes a lot of learning and coaches whose schemes fit their players. I think we can write off Haley, but the rest have shown flashes (Peppers, Baker, Beal, Love, Ballentine).

The question for me becomes do we go into next season with Jenkins as our slot and filling in some corner duty, or do we cut JJ, let Ballentine man that position for the whole year and draft his backup.

Depends if there's someone to spend the money on better/younger. Or if another team is willing to give up a pick for him. He's 31 so if there's someone better go for it, same if someone is willing to give up a pick. But no reason to just dump him for the sake of dumping him. Sherman is a big piece of the 49er D showing that it's possible to make an impact after 30.
My guess is that we add some additional staff
idiotsavant : 12/10/2019 6:31 pm : link
Positions at defensive backs coaching, safety coaching, DBs, even lbs in this regard to pass D.

Professionals with the words "NFL" and "probowls" and "Superbowls" appearing throughout long coaching resumes.

Since draft will more likely include lb and safety I'm not throwing rookie corners under the bus.

I agree, too early to trust Ballentine and the versatility JJ brings was an obvious plus. With the way our D was rostered last night, it tells me we’re Chase young, a Schobert type ilb, pep and Connelly, away from a scary defense. All we need is one more receiver a center and two damn tackles. I’m hoping we can trade shep for an extra 3rd. Two of those positions will have to be targeted in free agency. So close, but yet so far.

Shurmur was an idiot for not playing Beal. Now he's an idiot for not keeping Beal on the bench.

Was that a typo? Hes played like 3 or 4 games.... in his career.....

Beal has natural ability to stick to his man
Vanzetti : 12/10/2019 9:38 pm : link
You can't teach that. You either have it or you don't.

Has to learn how to play the ball and use his hands without committing a penalty.

He is like a young pitcher with a 97 mph fastball, who has to work on his secondary stuff.
Physically
Joey in VA : 12/10/2019 9:44 pm : link
He looks the part, but he hasn't played enough to really rate anything yet. Baker was a stud last night, it took him a lot of games to find his bearings, it's going to take Beal time too, but he's got the AA and he plays aggressively. I think if he stays healthy we have two keepers, but we have no pass rush, a bone headed DC and brain dead LBs.
He can hold his own
armstead98 : 12/10/2019 10:00 pm : link
The penalty people are referring to wasn't egregious, just a little too physical with the WR. He'll learn to keep that up.

What I liked was his physicality. Hes a bit smaller than I expected but willing to get physical and can run with the WRs.

Between Baker, Beal and Love I think we have three good building blocks.
