Comp pick for Eli.... are we entitled to get a pick?

No Where Man : 12/10/2019 6:32 pm
If Eli plays somewhere else next year what do you think our Comp pick would be? He will be starting his 17th year in 2020. Aren't Veteran Players slotted to have bigger salaries because of their longevity? The more it costs for Eli's salary, the higher the Comp pick, correct?
I have

a feeling we will be signing more players than we sign thus will probably not have any comps the year after.
I theory, he would count toward the comp pick formula.

In practice, it’s very unlikely we would get anything.
No, not correct. Nobody is "entitled" to a comp pick.

Comp picks are handed out based on what you do in free agency. If Eli plays elsewhere but the Giants spend a lot of money bringing in players, they get a low comp pick, if they get one at all.
He will most

likely get factored into the comp pick formula, depending on how much he signs for, playing time, and post-season honors and what other UFAs are signed and lost. It's not like baseball where one player lost to free agency can lead directly to a comp pick.

^This.
This is the only pick we'd get for Eli

Based on his contract, might that not partially offset our signees?

in order to get ANY comp picks, you have to LOSE more qualified free agents than you sign.

So if you think the Giants are going to sign more free agents than they lose, we won't be getting any comp picks. That includes Leonard Williams by the way.
Qualified free agents may be the only way

It would be difficult, but they would have to sign more free agents that were cut as opposed to players whose contracts ended and were UFAs.

So it will be interesting to see which free agents will ultimately be available vs. which of our own we will re-sign.
One advantage of the Williams trade

is that if you resign him, he does not count as a qualified free agent, as he would if you signed him from the Jets.

But to be honest, I don't think DG troubles himself with comp picks, I think he just goes after whoever he wants and just let's the chips fall where they may.

Giants have actually been really bad manipulating the comp formula in their favor, unlike the Eagles and Patriots
