SNY tweeting its Mets and Yankees for Betances. Probably one of my number one "wants" this offseason.
Carlos Beltran said he expects Jeff McNeil to be the Mets’ third baseman and Edwin Diaz to be the closer tonight.
Not expecting a lot this offseason but I dont think we need a lot. I do expect us to fill the few holes we have though...
Hopefully, there's some activity soon.
Coming off a down year, Mets reliever Jeurys Familia has shed 20 pounds since the offseason began, according to Carlos Beltrán.
"He wants to prove himself this year," Beltrán said. He wants to get back to the Familia we all know."
@MBrownstein89
McNeil has shown he can handle the hot corner quite well:
+4 DRS, 3.1 UZR in 170.1 innings between 2018-19.#Mets #LGM
@mikemayerMMO
Beltran has talked to Yoenis Cespedes and says that he’s progressing.
Allowing the premise, that would still be a major step up from last year.
I would not call Familia overweight, so the fact that he lost 20 pounds tells me that it is about his legs

Interesting. I can totally see that
Apparently we are still talking about Marte with the Pirates and they are interested in young cost controlled catchers. If we give up Alvarez I'm completely done with BVW. For Nido of course.

Nimmo to Marte is a medium upgrade at best and you're still giving way too many plate appearances to Jake Marisnick if you keep the same number of outfielders instead of adding another one to the mix! This is basic roster construction!

Mets will give up too much for Marte because they’ll insist on attaching Lowrie to any deal. They’ll use Marte as an excuse for not getting Betts. Then they’ll be looking to dump the remainder of Marte’s salary at the 21 trade deadline. Been there done that-send Cohen Cash.

Any time you can trade with a 27 year old with a .387 career OBP and a 127 OPS+ for a 31 year old with a PED suspension under his belt, you gotta do it.
On this we agree.
Good point about balance. But I think he likely also had a patella. That's particularly bad for a sinkerballer who needs regular work to be effective.
I hope he bounces back and I don't care how he does it. If losing weight helps terrific, I just remember around 2015/16 Harvey publicly commented that he thought being too lean was part of the reason for 1 of his injuries and that the extra weight can help bigger power guys over a long season (I think he cited Clemens as an example). Familia seems to fit that profile but who knows.
$36 Million/year, what could go wrong
Hopefully Mets can put a contender together and Mets fans can do more than pat themselves on the back for signing DeGrom for less money as they fail to get him into a playoff start since 2015.
Offseason has been a complete snoozefest so far for the Mets.
please be a snooze if that's the alternative.

Buckle up. Panic trade/move from Brodie is absolutely a possibility.
Which is scarier? Cohen can’t get here fast enough and bvw can’t be fired fast enough.

If the Mets throw Lowrie into a trade then they'll be forced to lower the return they get or throw in extra prospects to offset his cost.
Would be pathetic for an NY team to do this considering Lowrie only has 1 year left on his deal and all of the prospects the team has given up for underwhelming returns already.
We should be happier than the Yankees this offseason.
We made out better than any team in baseball this offseason with last week's news.
Sit tight until Cohen controls the money.
If/when Cano gets hurt, you might want a guy like Lowrie at 3B and then Mcneil can play his natural position. Even if cano doesn't get hurt, he probably will need plenty of days off.
Snooze is the best we can hope for until Cohen reaches and agreement with the Wilpons. Desperate BVW with no money is very scary.
@Mets
retained Wheeler they could have entertained the idea of Thor to Houston in a Correa deal. But no, lets Porcello it up #Mets
Player 1) 115 wRC+, .345 wOBA
Player 2) 137 wRC+, .371 wOBA.. One of these guys is 31 and signed for 2 seasons... the other is 27 and controlled for the next 3... #Mets
How is this unbelievable? It's exactly the MO of the team for the past decade.
Too bad that Mets wern't in on Gausman. Seemed like an affordable 5th starter who could be a good reliever also.
There's a video floating around of him taking batting practice. The Mets even confirmed that he's started running. It's still almost 4 months until the season.
It throws a whole new layer of confusion to things because he plays at our most crowded position (which for some reason our idiot GM wants to add more OFs) and we have no idea if he's still effective (if so, he's right up there with McNeil/Alonso value wise) or if he's shot after not playing baseball for most of 2 years.
Quote:
Mayer says he's hearing the Mets can't add a Marte salary (11 million) type without shedding salary. Unbelievable.

Sorry, "embarrassing". I wasn't doubting Michael. Just really sad.
He's putting a lot of eggs in the Diaz/Familia rebounding basket.
Not sure what an Arenado package would look like or if the Mets are a good match.

Rockies are willing to listen to trade inquiries on superstar 3B Nolan Arenado (and anyone else); they’ve gotten many calls on him since trade deadline. Would shake up monster 3B market (Rendon, Donaldson, Bryant) but no one sees as likely yet. Has full no-trade so up to him.
We knew there was 0 chance we'd be in on the FA's more expensive than Wheeler (Rendon, Cole, etc).
We knew there was a near 0 chance they'd approach the LTT.
We knew there was minimal room for any significant upgrades whatsoever, even those cheaper than Wheeler at a stated position of need like Grandal.
Now, knowing the Cohen news, there's even less of a chance the Wilpons spend their $. That isn't the issue though, that's a temporary necessity to be rid of them. I would sit out 2 offseasons to get rid of them if necessary.
The issue is BVW may make a panic move to improve the team instead of patiently waiting out the constraints. That's the fear right now.

have to figure it'd be a huge haul even though he makes market value for term.
Probably be looking at something like Baty, Gimenez, Alvarez and a productive major leaguer to even begin the conversation.
Considering insurance payments, and Mets actual money spent on team salary in 2018, 2019 and 2020 combined would barely be top 10.
That's a long way from being the Yankees and making Cole type of moves, but our offseason isn't going to look anything close to that. It's really frustrating because we all see the core of an MLB team that can be a contender if we just had a little more resources to put into it.
@jeffpaternostro
The Mets actual spend is like 70 million under the actual CBT number after insurance offsets, let’s not pretend they are playing in the same sandbox as the other teams bumping the tax.

Even with their weird cap manipulations, Cot’s still projects them 17m under the cap. Just sign Porcello if you really want. That goes to 140m under next year.
For Arenado
He's under contract 7 more years, expensive, but under contract and solid two-way player, so even if offense takes a hit away from Coors, he's a gold glove 3B.

I didn't realize this until I was just perusing the Twitter, but he's got an opt-out after 2021 which I suppose makes the valuation a bit more tricky.
You'd think the Mets could get this done while those teams are adding Cole, Wheeler and Didi. Too bad.
He is not a good defensive center fielder
He was -11 runs the worst for all center fielders
Nimmo is a better option than Marte
Also Marte is a very streaky hitter who is not likely to improve his production
Last year I think was an aberration
This is the type of move that makes no analytic sense
it comes from the beat writers who presumably get their information from actual sources.
so regardless if all the fans on here agree Nimmo to Marte isn't necessarily an upgrade and not worth the cost, the talk isn't starting from here.
Fans underestimate the impact that they have in this social media age. Multiple reliable sources indicated that McNeil was pulled out of the Cano/Diaz deal after fan reaction. Isles fans took out a series of billboards calling for the ouster of Garth Snow. He was fired months later and the Isles no longer are a joke.
Make yourselves heard folks. Also, might as well make yourselves heard that Gettleman has to go as well.

I'm not suggesting fans shouldn't make their voices heard, but BVW laughed when asked about McNeil in the Cano trade and said he was never in it and his explanation seemed plausible. As plausible as the information from "reliable sources" at least.

Rob Manfred said he expects “no governance issues” as a result of Steve Cohen’s pending purchase of the Mets, which would leave Fred Wilpon as the “control person” for five years.
Ideally, you'd have 3-4 guys like him and hope that at least one of them can emerge as a good option. Signing him and closing up shop on the rotation wouldn't be great. Let's hope there's more to come.
but again, I'm going to wait and see what the roster looks like in February.

Pretty much. He was so bad in 2019 that he'd be a repeat performance from being out of baseball. Underlying numbers aren't great either.
2015 & 17 look like the outliers. '13, '14, '16 he seems to have been around the same 93 mph he was the past 2 years (career average is 93.8). I dislike this signing because he's had 2 crappy, injury plagued years - but whether that's because of a velo drop is unclear.
The bigger concern is that his walk rate spiked big time from under 3 all of his good years (13-17) to almost 4 the past 2.
I HATE this nickel and dime BULLSHIT. I may just bail on this team until the ownership transfer happens.

Sources say Mets have had dialogue with the Astros about Carlos Correa. Nothing imminent.
In an Arenado trade the Mets "extra" pieces like JD Davis and Dom Smith could be valuable where neither is likely interesting to the Astros (with the Astros obviously trade Davis to the Mets).
If OAK has a solid reliever it would be the same as paying $10M for a reliever.

The Oakland Athletics are interested in acquiring Jed Lowrie, who was an all-star for them in 2018, provided the #Mets cover his remaining salary, according to the @sfchronicle

Texas and Oakland two teams who have talked Jed Lowrie with Mets per sources. @susanslusser
said Oakland first. A’s would only take Lowrie if Mets pay most of the money, I’m told.
