Gut Feeling

blue1986 : 12/10/2019 7:42 pm
I must say this, the day they announced Shurmur as head coach with Bettcher as DC. I felt a knot in my stomach and grabbed my head with my hands cause I knew it would be a problem and it came true. Who in the heck thought Bettcher is a good DC. I had never even heard of the guy and Pat Shurmur record speaks for itself. Anyone else feel the same that day
a lot of

people on this board actually were neutral to positive on Shurmur. His record with the Browns was often cited as evidence that he should Get a second chance at being a HC

Bettcher caused SOME, not a lot, some, consternation because he was viewed as a DC that needed good players to succeed. He had good years in ARI when his players were good-- as soon as that fell off, his ability to be a effective DC also seemed to wane.

I think he's suffered the exact same issues here.
I was optimistic about Shurmur

I liked the year the Vikings had with Keenum and figured anyone would struggle in Cleveland. Was completely wrong obviously.

People were mostly split on Patricia. Often citing how assistants for Bill haven't really succeeded.

When DG got up to the press conference to announce PS, the

"we hired an adult" quote

really resonated and people ate it up here.
Bettcher was a decent DC in AZ,

and I think he has been dealt something of a bad hand. His players are either mediocre or really young. Dead last in the league in cap allocation to defense. At some point, talent matters.

That said the D has played better of late. They were outstanding in the first half last night, and some of the rookies are contributing. Love in particular looked really good. It’s all a moot point, as even if Shurmer is retained (highly unlikely), Bettcher would be a sacrificial lamb.
Of the guys they interviewed, I wanted Patricia

...but they didn't even bother to interview Reich or Vrabel.
I was neutral on Shurmur, figuring you couldn’t

Hold struggling in Cleveland against him.

The bigger gut feeling I had was just how whacked the whole GM/HC search felt from the jump. Accorsi, the quick move to Gettleman and the lack of urgency or creativity in the head coaching search.
Bettcher

I was meh on Shurmur but liked Bettcher as DC. AZ defenses were good.
I actually liked the Bettcher hire

I can’t lie. He had success in zona wtf did I know... I guess that was all attributed to arians..
Bettcher is one of the biggest disappointments.
Since1965 : 12/10/2019 10:01 pm : link
It seemed like he was going to be a steal at the time, and it seemed that comments from around the league were favorable about him. But, it's unfathomable that some of these guys are still getting confused about coverages at this point in the season.

And Arians recommended Bettcher to Arizona for their head coaching position.
i thought Bettcher was good hire

he had some really good defenses in Arizona, I dont remember guys running free down the field when he was the DC there.
THey both need to go...
Dnew15 : 12/11/2019 8:13 am : link
having said that, I think both were handed an impossible task...bake a good pie with terrible ingredients and a boss that won't let you get better ones until he says so. And oh by the way, when you do get better ingredients, you have to bake it in under 5 minutes.

Good luck with all that.
I too liked the Bettcher hire.

The Cardinals defense was good while he was there and he seemed to be on the rise. If I remember correctly there was one other team bidding for his services and he chose the Giants.

Wouldn't Bowles make more sense if you're giving credit to someone other than Bettcher? Isn't Arians' background almost exclusively on the offensive side of the ball?
