Alec Olgetree: We weren’t prepared.

joeinpa : 12/11/2019 8:23 am
Olgetree on Joe and Evan yesterday said two things that were pretty damming. Full disclosure I heard the 15 second clip on Boomer and Gio this morning so I do not have the context, but:

“We were doing things we hadn’t practice” and regarding the Ertz catch in OT, we weren’t prepared.

Pretty bold regardless of context.
I'll play along

How about, "I wish I didn't suck so much. Maybe I'm a good reason why we're 2-11."
He said the TD in overtime apparently was a play or a formation

they had never seen before.
It wasn’t some crazy gadget play
ron mexico : 12/11/2019 8:26 am : link
What exactly were they doing on a goal line stand they had never practiced before?

I gotta call some level of bull shit on this.

Well, yeah, because Ertz was lined up at WR because everyone who had a pulse was out with injury. The excuse making has to stop. A professional player shouldn't have to be told to recognize the opponents only weapon. Ertz runs a lumbering 4.79 40, yet he is running free in the secondary the entire second half. Ogletree and the entire secondary should be embarrassed.
Bunch of high character guys

So...
BamaBlue : 12/11/2019 8:35 am : link
an NFL veteran claims that they didn't practice covering a tight end in practice, so they weren't prepared. I'm throwing the BS flag...

Ogletree is using the narrative that people want to believe... failure is all on the coaching staff. Don't look at the stupid penalties, blown coverages and mental errors made by players on the field. Don't look at the two times that Ogletree had a clear shot a Wentz and couldn't even lay a hand on him... they never practiced tackling Carson Wentz.
Ogletree needs to go

I think it s just proud accomplishment athletes who are embarrassed and tired of the losing. I don’t believe it s a lack of taking responsibility but who knows what s going on in those meetings during the week getting ready for the game.

This is a lost season it s normal to go into self preservation mode.

I still can't believe that a good portion

of BBI doesn't see that the team hasn't materially changed in the past 8 years. Different coaches, different GMs, different players, same damn behavior and shitty results (which have actually worsened).
I heard the convo with Bro and Evan yesterday in the car
mfsd : 12/11/2019 8:40 am : link
they asked the question we all wanted an answer to - everyone knew they'd be going to Ertz, how come he ended up so open?

To which Ogletree replied about it being a different formation than they'd seen before

Which is insane. It's football...you figure out where the best player is and cover him.

Ogletree sounded like a beaten man. I give him credit for still doing the interviews, when there clearly aren't any answers. Other than to just admit they suck.

Some of that is on the guys up front. That one play where Ertz was wide open on the sideline Wentz bought like 8 seconds. Of course someone is gonna get that open.

And yes Olgetree obviously needs to go, but him sending this message to John may alone be worth his salary. Crank up the noise and get these coaches out of here.

Yes, it is not rocket science. Ertz has killed us for years just like Witten. It is like we have no clue how good they are or what they are capable of. Between the deep seem pass and the 2 TD's Ertz was the difference in that game. Scheme to make somebody else beat you. This is on the DC, that said Ogletree is not a good LB.
I believe Ogletree when he says they were not prepared.
penkap75 : 12/11/2019 8:54 am : link
Our coaching staff are proven losers.

But you have to be one dumb fucking moron player with no football intellect to not cover the only legit receiver. Even in sandlot football the kids know to cover the best guy.
They all need to go
ZogZerg : 12/11/2019 8:54 am : link
If you don't know to cover their best receiver, especially when they have no healthy WRs, then there are major issues. You don't always get the answer sheet before the test, but you should know to put your name on it.....

They had two timeouts, I believe. Either the coaching staff or a player on the field could have called a TO if they were looking at a formation they never saw before with the GAME on the line!

Oh, that presumes a competent coaching staff that properly prepares the players. Something we haven't had in a long time.

I'm less than a football player, but I knew for sure that they would go to Ertz and eh would catch the TD pass as soon as the referees said the Eagles would receive in OT.

He and Thomas stood there like fucking idiots

At some point, when you see the same stupid shit happening again and again, it has to fall on the coaches.

And i'm calling bullshit that is a formation he's never seen before. How long has the fucking guy been playing football? So if he never saw it before what was the signal he was making to Thomas? Was that the stand there and do nothing call? Fuck him, and fuck the coaches

Making mistakes. Rookies have growing pains.

But

It seems like a lot, and I mean A LOT of the mistakes and bad play of the defense are on the veterans. Ogletree / Bethea / etc etc...

Nothing that getting rid of these overpriced and under-performing veterans and a new coaching staff can't fix. Please?

You could kind of understand it if it was some really off the wall shit, like the crazy formations that the Ravens and Patriots have trotted out at times.

In this particular case, with the Patriots getting ready to run McCown out there at WR due to injuries and a fairly vanilla formation, the excuse machine has to work overtime to exonerate them.

Couple that with 4 rookie defensive backs.

Here’s an idea
Daniel in MI : 12/11/2019 12:59 pm : link
When you have their QB dead to rights, twice, try making one of the sacks.

Or, at the goal, game on the line in OT, you see a formation that’s so dreadfully confusing, be a team captain and call time freaking out so you don’t - I don’t know - let the obvious target go uncovered for the game winner?

Or maybe he’s smart enough to want Chase on the DL.

The defensive assignments are sent
greatgrandpa : 12/11/2019 1:21 pm : link
To the defender with the earpiece on the field. The player does not draw the assignments on the dirt. Given what happened with the kid not being told he was starting at left tackle and the complete confusion on assignments on both sides of the line (see Baldingers video) I’m siding with the player on this one. The giants have been coached by Abbott and Costello for two years. I never thought I’d see a worse coaching staff than Handleys till this steaming mess.
That is damning of the coaching staff
Mattman : 12/11/2019 2:15 pm : link
I remember reading a story of Pat Flaherty going back and scouted the Patriots superbowl appearances and he noticed that they tend to come out in a different defensive set than their normal... Giants were ready when the saw it.

Good coaches ensure their team is prepared, like Coughlin and his staff did. They always stressed being prepared.

Week 14 and they should be able to apply any concept to any formation and at least get hats on hats. Jesus, even if they don't know what they are doing do something 100% other than stand there confused.

Ertz was the only player to worry about. He's been their best offensive player for at least two years.

I will NEVER understand how he can be left UNCOVERED in that situation.

It's gross negligence by both the coaches and players.

They make millions of dollars to supply us, the passionate fans, with an enjoyable experience for our entertainment dollars. We bleed blue with this team.

This can only happen if the people involved are literally incompetent or don't give a shit. Or both. You decide which it is.

Did the Rams try to get rid of him because he was a bad character guy or a guy terrible in the locker room? Neither. They traded him because he sucks! Good job Dave but probably not as bad as trading a high draft pick(and a lower one) for an impending free agent.
The latter gaffe are grounds for termination when you look at the total picture of Gettleman's job with the Giants.
