How could Jones possible flourish??
You have 2 tackles that are among thee worst in the league
A center who gets pushed backwards on almost every play
A second year guard who's regressed considerably
A right guard who is stout in the passing game, but has no strength as a run blocker
A tight end who can't stay on the field
Blocking tight ends who cant block, and are slower than lineman
A stud running back who has been hurt most of the season
A #1 receiver, who really is a slot receiver but is forced to play outside due to lack of legit talent out there, besides missing multiple games with concussions
Another receiver that missed multiple games, and is on the backside of his career
Happily we are blessed with a 5th round pick who has looked like a complete steal, or else we'd be even worse.
If that's even possible.
And worst of all, a head coach that NEVER out-coaches, schemes, or adjusts better than any coach on the opposite sideline.
This season was tossed away (sadly) very early on - but we got out of it exactly what we needed to.
Jones saw the live bullets, felt the heat of the bright lights, took some punishments and we saw what he could do well and learned what he needs to work on (all things totally correctable).
We have high draft picks, cap space, a QB of the future and some decent pieces at high priced positions that are getting burn to accilmate to the NFL (DL and hopefuly CB).
I am the eternal pessimist with the Giants these days, but if we have a legit coaching staff in place going into the combine - I could confidently say I will be as optimisic as I have been since 2012.
Be patient.
I get that it matters, and the numbers would look better if there were 5 studs there. Keep in mind, it's unlikely in Jones' entire career that a dominant OL will stay together long, even if it's built. Injuries happen, and it's just so difficult to get that many good OL on one unit. This is the reality of playing QB in the NFL.
That's why the best QBs in the NFL playing today can move and extend plays. If you were thinking about a top 5 QBs in the NFL right now, you'd probably have (not in order) Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, and you may have Matt Ryan and Drew Brees in there, maybe Brady, but it's not a coincidence that at least 3 of those top 5 guys can really move around.
And if you look at the reigning SB champs and their GOAT QB you can see what the effect of a bad OL is.
A new coach next year may be able to get us winning and work with DJ more.
Drafting a QB next year does not appear to be the #1 need.
I'd love to see Jones be able to do that.
There's certainly nothing, yet, to suggest he stinks, but there's also not much basis to say he's flourished. The first few games were very encouraging, since then he's had some ups and plenty of downs. Totally understandable given a difficult situation, but there's no reason to credit him more than his performance warrants.
Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, Murray & Jones all have played well at times and terrible at times.
Allen has a good coach. Jury is out Kingsbury. The other 3 have have awful coaches.
It's way too soon to tell on any of them.
I'd love to see Jones be able to do that.
Yep. I think a first-rate center would be more important than an LT. You'd think our head-coach former-center would realize the value of a first-class center to create a pocket for our QB's to step into. All the tackles need to do is push the D-ends wide and deep, because then the D-ends have to attack a QB who's moved towards the line of scrimmage rather than away from it.
