You asked me to dial up my modem, so here you go. The football Giants currently have just over 63 mil in cap space. Releasing the following veterans this offseason, who have very little guaranteed money against the cap remaining will yield the following: Jenkins (11.25 mil/3.5 dead) Ogletree (8.25 mil/3.5dead) Ellison (5mil/1.25dead) Martin (4.8mil/1.16 dead) and everyone's favorite Bethea (2.75mil). That is 32 mil in cap space savings with just 9.5 in dead cap money. Is there anyone essential to the future of this team on that list that you are frightened of losing? Add the expected 10 to 12 mil anticipated increase in cap space for each team and you are over 100 million in cap space. This does not even include the ability of restructuring existing contracts to create even more space.
I am in no way saying there will be enough quality players to spend this money on, we will not know this till April and there will be a lot of competition. Yet, the avenue to get there is certainly available and I do not see any reason to keep one of these players for another season, Jenkins included. Time to move on and keep the rebuild going. Fire away!
